1998 Saturn. Both cars only got scratches. It was a freak accident. Surgery Thursday, maybe.

My new band Troubador! played our first-ever show last night at Love At First Slice Pizza in Newark, CA last night. I'm the tie-dye kid with the bitchin' Hofner bass.

And here's a promo photo we took about 2 hours before our set

This one shows you a bit more of the atmosphere of the show; this was during the one cover song we did (as well as the only song I sang), "Twist and Shout"

That was the song that really got the night going, too, everybody loves the Beatles! The bass belongs to my best friend, he's loaning it to me since he can't bring it with him while he's in the Air Force (he brought his Jazz Bass with him since it's a lot more sturdy and durable than, say, a hollowbody bass, although McCartney's has lasted him for decades).

Nothing in music is original anymore. Same with art. Not saying that people aren't creative, but chances are that whatever is "new" references something else and is by no means going to be a new revolution because it's already been done before.

That sounds really pessimistic, but when you're talking about the rules of music, it's all been done. It may sound different, but there's something in it that has been done before.

Yes and no? They did a LOT with recording techniques that hadn't been done before. (Particularly with Eleanor Rigby and Tomorrow Never Knows.)

Idunno, I never heard of the Beatles singing at a cymbal and close-miking both so that the cymbal would provide a natural reverb. That's part of how I spent my day. I also never heard of them using reverb tanks as percussion, or weed grinders for that matter. They also never played a stylophone or used a megaphone to process vocals. Or taken a complete "I have no idea what I'm doing" take of a trumpet (we really didn't know what we were doing) only to use it prominently at the end of a song.

There's still plenty of things the Beatles never tried, people are just too timid to do it because they (perhaps self-consciously) think the Beatles invented the universe. They didn't, they just made it worth me living in it.

Here's me and Kabir at our last show as Injun Magic. We're not breaking up, I just finally managed to get him to agree to change that stupid name. I'm finally sick enough of hearing about how much the name sucks to start caring.

I don't think Linds was saying that the Beatles have done everything there is to do. She was just saying that everything is a development from something that has been done before and nothing is totally new. Which I agree with, regardless of your weed grinder percussion.

We're changing it for a reason: I finally managed to convince Kabir that it's not polite to use a band name that contains the racial slur "Injun". It's pejorative against the aboriginal folk of America. He just thought it was cute because he's Indian, as in, India.

I was in this choral festival over the weekend. Dress code for guys was suit and tie. Black bow tie, to be exact. I had to buy one.

This was obviously something that needed to be preserved for posterity.

Yes, it's March and there's still a Christmas wreath on the wall, and my house is a mess. It's a nice wreath, and we're kinda lazy.

If you look really hard, you can see me, but you still can't tell that I'm just wearing black jeans with a suit coat. We were there all day, and I was gonna be comfortable, dammit.

We do a choral thing at the cathedral every christmas, and I had to buy a bow tie a couple of years ago. I have an old flat-pleat tux shirt with a wingtip collar that I wear with it, under a black suit whose jacket is much like your own.

No pics, though.

Oh, and don't feel bad - we almost have Christmas packed up, and one of these days I'll get the lights off the front porch...

My student still has his Christmas tree up. I am chalking it up to a failure on my part to explain the concept of Twelth Night properly. But perhaps he just likes the christmas pig/bear/dog card that he stuck on top in lieu of a star.
