I can see where ChaoSera is coming from. EXIF stores a lot more data than you think, especially GPS data, which makes it somewhat scary if you post that information online.

But evil? I wouldn't go as far as that.

Well, comparatively few cameras have GPS built in, even now.  And being aware of such stuff is not so hard, really.

Every phone nowadays has GPS built in, and they can store geo-location in exif data.

Exactly what Masterpiece said. Pictures taken by phone are risky to put online, that goes especially for young girls who decide to send naked pictures to whomever. If that picture finds its way to 4chan, you are in trouble. Tracking somebody down using the EXIF data and some facebook search skills is disturbingly easy.

But you can stop your phone from GPSing you, can't you? I basically do that all the time because I didn't want my location being broadcast anywhere and I assumed it used data, I only turn it on if I'm lost. Or does it keep doing that?

You can turn off your GPS, but you can't turn off the tracking via the mobile network and that's enough to give a rough estimate of your geographical position, which then gets embedded in a picture's EXIF data.

Hey guys, you can learn about how your devices work!

In my iPhone, I can turn location services (not just GPS) on or off as a whole, and if on can allow or prohibit individual apps from accessing it.  My iPhone is set so that I can use GPS when out, but my camera cannot get to it.

Android, sadly, only allows turning location on and off as a whole, but none the less you can do that.  In v4.3 and v4.4 there is code to allow controlling access to location from individual apps, but (a) you have to get an app ("App Ops Starter") to reach it, and (b) Google have blocked this app in non-rooted v4.4.2 "because the code is experimental".  Google also stores your movement history if your device is logged in - you can delete that by going to a website.

You can be secure - but Apple are better at letting you be than Google are.

When people say "all phones have GPS" do they mean all smart phones? My little Alcatel OT 665 doesn't have anything that I can think of as using GPS. I realise it's possible to locate a phone based on its signals to the network but beyond that, do non-smart phones have any location technology?

Mostly no. GPS technology got extremely popular with the second gen iPhone. It was available before then, but not in "feature phones".

That said, if you live in an urban area with plenty of cell phone towers, tracking your location is a piece of cake. And if you store cellular data, it's very easy to create a movement pattern of you.
A German politician once sued the German Telekom and requested access to his stored cellular data. He proceeded to give this data to a German newspaper which reproduced his movement and created an interactive map:
Click play to see him go about his days.

This is what scares me much more than the metadata in exif files. It's this systematic approach to monitoring the populace. If anyone wanted to dirty my name, they know everything about me. And I can't do anything to change that.

If someone wanted to know where I was, they'd just have to check the CCTV cameras. I live in a city; I am on film every second I'm in public and quite often when I'm in semi-public buildings like university.

And note that the UK has the highest ratio of CCTV cameras to population in the world.  Apparently less than 2% are state-owned (source), there is one camera to 11 people (source), and they amount to 20% of the world's CCTV (source).

(The last two sources are the Daily Telegraph and the Daily Mail - make of that what you will.)

In 336 NHL games with St. Louis and New Jersey, Cam Janssen has amassed 6 goals (three this season) and 774 penalty minutes, most of which have been fighting majors.

Like most hockey enforcers, he's a really nice guy off the ice who takes a fucking beating to earn his check.

So guys, remember my beard photo? I think the time to shave may have come. An old feller stopped me at Wawa today while I was grabbing my lunch and asked me about the status of the Northern Maryland and Delaware fishing/crabbing fleets, which company I was with, and what port we sailed out of.

Yeah.

I'm actually an able seaman signed on with the National Underwater Marine Agency. (NUMA). We make port all over the place but are primarily based out of a small annex on Norfolk Naval Base.

I have some seamanship certs somewhere, but I never pursued it because my legs are jacked up. So all I'm good for now is drinking rum and singing shanties. I did however get my shellback! So eat it lubbers.

I sailed the great lakes.  We lived in Buffalo at the time, and had a 21' open cockpit wooden sloop for a few years that we sold and upgraded to a 27' racing sloop.  Sailed to Ontario and back many a time, once in a gale-force storm that got us halfway across the lake with no sails up.  Won our division in the '78 Great Lakes Championship, too.

Most runs included the importation of several cases of duty-free canadian beer... some of which made it home.    :police:
