Marten, if you get too drunk to dance I will be so mad!  :x

On the other hand, unless its everclear or bacardi 151, those two drinks might loosen him up and make him want to dance like a fool.

Take it easy now, Marty.

Faye's smashed. Marten's about to get smasheder.

This cannot end well.

Faye might actually be sober at this point.  She doesn't seem to have any "drunk bubbles" floating around her.

Speaking of characters in the background, is that Charlotte the AnthroPC standing behind Marten in a couple of panels?  Hair's the right colour, hairstyle is sort of right, but it could be a guy.

My guess is she's still going to have a headache tomorrow.

Liquid rhythm...

Marten may well be a truly terrible dancer, and needs to lower his inhibitions enough to actually go out there and even attempt it.

I have found that my dancing improves as the peope around me drink more.

Seems to be exactly what Marten's aiming for-drinking himself into unconsciousness so he doesn't HAVE to dance.

EDIT: Or be so drunk he won't care how he looks on the dance floor...

Tarbender! Get me 2 Pan-Galactic Gargle Blasters.

Maryen probably never danced in his earlier years, due to him being on stage guitarin'

I know very few musicians who have spent much time on the dance floor.

Also given both his Mother's and his Father's professions, Marten is probably not comfortable with public displays of his physical sexuality.

Considering Padma gave Faye a solid punch outside the club, to what extent would that have cleared Faye's mind? I've known a few people to quickly sober up in such situations - probably the body produced a load of adrenaline or something (in the fight or flight situation) which countered the effects of the alcohol... Is there any chemists here to confirm?

Well, it has  been a while since Angus' departure, and Faye's coping drunk.  A few hours, at least.  I'm sure with her practiced liver, the buzz is wearing off by now.

For comic #2051...

1. Poor Marten, caught between a rock & a hard place, both of whom are capable fist-fighters.

2. Art-wise, I liked the angle-shot for panel #3.  Jeph rarely disappoints for mixing it up, rather than sticking purely to a side-shot style.

3. Were I still a drinker, passed-out patron's reaction would actually be more of an endorsement than a warning to me  , just like Marten apparrently.

4. Adrenaline and endorphins work somewhat as a sobering effect (Note "effect," does not actually negate the alcohol in you).  Pain itself also works well.  It is a regrettable thing in one's life when one can say they have experienced both :-( .

5. Just because your mind is "clearer" does not mean your mind is "clear," or makes you any less drunk since said alcohol is still in your system.  But comic-wise, I assume since there are no drunk-bubbles," Faye is (relatively) sober-minded.  Though I question the wisdom of pushing Marten towards a girl [Padma] with laden with so many complications, potential drama-bombs (see "Elliot"), and a timer ticking down (for when Padma moves back to California).

6. A general and major misconception of drunkeness vs. sobering methods: When you eat (various) foods or drink caffeinated drinks (coffee being the one most think of) in a attempt to counteract being drunk, you are not actually "detoxifying" the effect of alcohol.  Your body is trying to process both effects at the same time, like trying to cover up a smoker's smells with air-freshener.  This is why most people burn-out &/or crash harder as a result (in the immediate-, short-, and long-term of drinking), the body is trying to multi-task contradicting effects.  The best solution remains hydrating (meaning: "drink lots of clean water") and rest (or "time" as akronnick just posted).

Mythbusters busted that.

The only thing that can sober you up is time.

Hardly... trying sobering up techniques such as drinking coffee and putting your head in cold water isn't quite the sort of stimuli that would trigger your body to sober yourself up - or at least react in such a way to counter the drunken effects of alcohol...  Plus their final act of "slap in the face" saw an improvement in Adam's score post slap which hardly disproves my point... If anything Mythbusters indicated my point was a bit more valid if anything else.

No actions can immediately sober you up, but the body is capable of producing a load of chemicals that can cancel out the effect.

Or tequila, in which case he will find himself somewhere on the Canadian border tomorrow looking for other people called "Marten Reed".

Thas what happened to me last time I drank it.

Seriously, does anyone really not know how to dance? OK, Marten might not be super-good, but he is a musician, so he must have a sense of rhythm. It's not like he has to learn the minuet or something to dance with Padma. Come on...

But yes, you should not laugh in your dance partner's face, no matter how lame their performance.

I have lead feet, and people say I move too stiffly even when I'm smashed.  About the only dance I can do is the two-step.

It wouldn't be so bad if I wasn't a foot taller than the average American and could just disappear into a crowd.

That drink sounds like a poor strategy to avoid any given floor (with his face).

"...straight into a jet engine" made me laugh so loudly my girlfriend assumed I was watching MST3K. Something about that line and Faye's face and Marten's arms just made me crack up.

And yeah, count me among the "can't dance" people. Want me to kick a dude in the gut while punching in someone else's face? I'm graceful as all get out. Want me to move around a dance floor? I'm awkward two-left-feet-made-of-lead-man. One is planned and has structure and the other is free form. Anything without structure just sends my brain into panic mode and most dance (at least the kind that people do at parties and what not) is pretty free form. I'm usually the guy at parties sitting on the couch having funny conversations and not the guy flitting around the floor. I sympathize with Marten here.

However, the last time I danced at a dance I did get a lot of "oh you're so brave for trying since you obviously can't dance worth squat" from some of the ladies and it all ended up ok in the end. Here's hoping that Padma finds this more endearing than "oh wow what a spaz."

Sometimes, when you say "I don't know how to dance", what you really mean is "I'm too embarrassed to dance in front of all my friends because I'm afraid that they're watching and judging me".

And sometimes, when you say "I don't know how to dance", what you really mean is "I don't know how to dance."

People like Faye who encourage non-dancey people to dance should bear in mind that the second option is entirely possible. Especially in the case of someone like Marten. :P

Seriously, does anyone really not know how to dance?

Does the Safety Dance count?

Thank you, you have no idea what you've tapped into.

When that video came out, my future wife and I were involved with the SCA, and did a ren faire north of Indianapolis.  The consensus among our friends was that she looked exactly like the girl in that video.  A friend even taped it (on his betamax) and we paused it - yup, the hair, the smile/maniacal grin, the outfit - a perfect match!

Anyway, on midsummer's day we had a Morris dancing troupe at the ren faire, and during the grand processional she gave a grin, jerked he arms into an S and started singing, "We can dance if we want to..." and our whole group joined in, including the Morris dancers.  The hired actors weren't too pleased, neither were the people who ran the thing, but the populace enjoyed it!

And no, I never looked like the guy with the hair and leather vest.

Or the midget.

Marten forgot the most important rule of dancing...

"It's all in the hips!"
