Need New Body - UFO

Catchy, bouncy, and just downright fun to listen to, but at the same time abrasive, jarring, and frequently toeing the line of obnoxiousness, Need New Body is nothing if not unpredictable. They exist in an as yet unnamed category almost all their own: some sort of spazz-folk created with banjos, eight-bit video game consoles, junkyard percussion, absurd ranting, and campfire chanting. UFO, their second album, is much like their first in that you can expect the unexpected at each turn. The spontaneity keeps you listening just to hear what they'll try next. And even when they flop, you can't help but admire the sheer enthusiasm poured into even the most obviously tossed-off, half-baked experiments. One of these half-baked experiments comes right at the beginning of UFO. As if to weed out the weak and unadventurous, "Gigglebush Meets CompUSA" starts with an off-balance beat like a hippo trying to walk a balance beam, then disintegrates into the grating death rattle of some insectoid robot sent from the near future. Few bands would be so brave (some might say foolish) as to try this sort of thing. "Hotshot" continues with a fist-pumping chant-along that shows off drummer Chris Powell and his fast-becoming-signature new wave meets Krautrock 4/4 beat. "Moondear" is maybe the most unlikely thing Need New Body could do at this point, an (almost) straight-faced acoustic ballad. But with "Popfest" they settle into what they do best: that unavoidably catchy and bouncy beat shows up again with industrial noise drilling and hammering away in spasms while the group-sung mantra "Meets, hits it off, hangs out, makes friends, and is never seen again" is repeated just shy of ad nauseam. DigDug meets self-mutilation on "Show Me Your Heart," and syncopated human beatboxes duel on "Turken Hogan." Then there's the mock late-night R&B radio show skit "Dr. Spliffin's Food Drive." One could go on and on. Each song offers something new and exciting. And even after the album is thoroughly digested, UFO continues to satisfy through Need New Body's untouchable rhythm section, its sense of humor, and its almost scary level of exuberance. UFO is another must-be-heard-to-be-believed album from this bunch of Philly area weirdos.

The objective description: slow, heavy, reverb-y, swirly-yet-plodding guitar rock with floaty vocals laid over top.  This album has such a distinct appeal to me that I find it hard to praise without feeling as if nobody will really understand why because they're not me.  I have no idea whether you will like it or not but I really like to think that you will.

The Mystick Krewe of Clearlight - The Mystick Krewe of Clearlight



This band was a project by members of EyeHateGod, Crowbar, and Down (all punishingly heavy sludge/doom metal bands) in order to let them play in a more improvisational style that they'd picked up from growing up in New Orleans.  The result sounds like the Swamp Thing channeling the Allman Brothers.  It's sorta weird to talk about a "doom jam" band but these guys come pretty close to being precisely that.  This album is heavier than a 55-gallon drum of nails set in concrete, but these guys do it without the repetition that defines plodding masterpieces like Sleep's "Dopesmoker" ... they seriously never stop jamming the whole time.  The last song is worth the price of admission alone, and even contains a hidden live track that appears to be a recording of a Mardi Gras celebration.

I didn't mention Nadja because I got most of the Nadja I have from this thread, probably from you, and it seemed pretty silly to thereafter offer them as my own.  (Although I did get my hands on a live recording labeled "Trembled" somewhere else ... if you don't already have it that might be something you're into.)  Also, the level of drone in the Nadja I've listened to has dissuaded me a bit ... I need to be in a very specific frame of mind to enjoy that sort of stuff, it's not something I'll put on every time I sit down.

What got me about Moccasin was that the same thing that made Dead Meadow my favorite band for such a long time.  They're able to give me the same cool being-transported-somewhere-by-the-music feeling as I get when I listen to more post-rock-y, drone-y, or tripped-out shit, but they don't need to stretch songwriting convention to the same extremes to do it.  Moccasin got me really excited because they joined the very small list of core bands that sound to me like they understand what "heavy psychedelic rock" is the same way I do (the others on that list being the aforementioned Dead Meadow, Kyuss, Colour Haze, and Om.)

Sleep - Dopesmoker

Dopesmoker is an album and song by the stoner metal band Sleep. The album was released by Tee Pee Records originally in 2003.

For their third record, Sleep took almost two years writing, re-writing, and recording with producer Billy Anderson, investing a large portion of their major label advance on the album. The result was a 63-minute song, "Dopesmoker", that left the managers at London Records confused and dismayed. The song was reworked into the 52-minute "Jerusalem" but London Records still refused to release it. The band was subsequently dropped, and the resulting red tape contributed heavily to the band’s disbanding. The later version was released under the title of Jerusalem with the song cut into six different tracks against the band's wishes.

In 2003, "Dopesmoker" was released in its full-length single-track form and is considered the definitive version of the third album by Sleep.

Bardo Pond - Set and Setting

It’s best to have no other distractions because music rarely reaches this level of mindfulness, showering down equations of hypnotic effluvia to all entry points and filtering transcendent beauty through a dirty undergrowth. So many bands attempt density simply through effects and fractured singing. To consider Bardo Pond in that realm is like calling John Coltrane occasionally interesting stoner jazz. Each song on Set And Setting carefully builds a monolith of beauty, indulging the parameters of sound with thoughtful consideration as to what will buzz between the drumbeats before being obliterated.

Over the years, Bardo Pond have morphed into a unit with a singular vision, allowing for a wide range of sounds while pushing the furthest extremes of experimentation. "Again" shows how far they can push the rock, while "Datura" takes ambient repetition to deeper, inner levels. In a lesser band’s hands, this might be indulgent. Bardo Pond, however, are the skilled abstract expressionists of rock; from their violent, discordant gestures comes an art of immense maturity and inexplicable beauty. Listen in through the layers of confusion to hear the inner structure of how the noise is contained--it’s not unconditioned feedback but composed chaos, seething with soulful emotion set to slow tempo.

Comets on Fire - Field Recordings From the Sun

Santa Cruz semi-supergroup Comets on Fire, featuring folks from various other bands -- like the Lowdown's Noel Harmonson on "echoplex and oscillations" and Ethan Miller on guitar and vocals -- created an agreeably tripped-out second record with Field Recordings From the Sun. Though the first, hyper-limited-edition release was MC5 meets Hawkwind in the farthest reaches of the galaxy straight-up, Field Recordings tempers that somewhat with a little more restraint here and there, making for some bemusing contrasts. Ben Chasny of Six Organs of Admittance is one of the many guests, and hearing his involving percussion work on the opening "Beneath the Ice Age" may lead an unwary listener to think this will be a fairly low-key listen. That is, until the whole band completely fires up and Miller starts singing in a massively echoed voice over equally massive guitar riffs about god knows what. Given the equally jaw-dropping roars of "Return to Heaven" and "ESP," the smack-in-the-middle mostly acoustic ramble of "The Unicorn" very much stands out, though to be sure feedback insanity begins halfway through and keeps increasing as the song continues. The general air of murk and mayhem could almost lead to assuming the album was recorded one room over, but the bandmembers clearly know what they want to achieve. Miller's attempts to be both Rob Tyner and Robert Calvert (not to mention Wayne Kramer and Dave Brock) work not as a mere revival but its own form of insanity. The Ben Flashman/Utrillo Belcher rhythm section creates more than their fair share of heavy-duty rumbling mayhem and shot-to-hell R&B breaks, while Harmonson makes as many swoops and swirls as possible in the mix. "The Black Poodle" wraps everything up with a ten-minute space rock jam and then some, with Harmonson going crazy over the rhythm insanities conjured up. ~ Ned Raggett, All Music Guide

Earth - Earth 2

Imagine how you would feel if the gravity of the earth would be ten times stronger than it is now. Your feet feel as if they are stuck in ten ton concrete. Your hands constantly seem to reach towards the ground. Your shoulders feel so heavy that you feel like laughing at Jesus' painful facial expression while he is carrying something ridiculous like a cross. Even if you make the biggest effort, you can't even take a step forward. Well, if it is possible for you to imagine something like that, then you might have an idea about the sound of Earth.

Improbably slow and heavy guitar riffs and a bass vibe that sounds like an earthquake are exclusively used drenching the listener into an agonising experience, surrounding him with apocalyptic feedback sounds with a particular Sabbathian touch.

How can one describe this? It's not possible to speak about music, since Earth makes f.i. Winter sound like a speed metal band. Instead it is an experience of never suspected gravity forces holding you captive in their almighty power. Painfully minimalistic, threating and dark sounds hold you in their grip until you confess that nobody can beat the sound of the planet itself when it comes to heaviness and primitive power.

On this album you will find not a single voice, no drums, no keyboards, no special effects: only the pure, primitive forces of the earth making the heaviness worshipper like me bow in awe and greet the mighty planet....

Growing - Color Wheel

From initial harmonic ramblings and flirts with noise on their two Kranky albums to experimentations with psychedelic form on their Troubleman released ‘His Return’ and now to deeper, dirtier sounds on ‘Color Wheel’, Growing are a band that are clearly uninterested in treading water… or treading sludge at least. Released on Mogwai’s Rock Action label in the UK, this is their finest moment to date – a combination of the dirty metal sounds they have always been threatening and the pastoral ambience that they’re just so damn good at. I read in an interview recently that the duo once shared an apartment with ex-Earth and Melvins chap Joe Preston, also known as Thrones – they said he didn’t teach them a lot, but gave them subtle hints at making their sound, you know, deep. Well it shows, they’ve got the sounds and the styles to out-drone Earth when they want to, but they avoid mere parody by injecting something that is unique. It’s metal but it is anything but aggressive, and anything but dark. It worries me actually, as metal for most people (me included) is interesting precisely because of the darkness, and when you take that away what exactly are you left with? The noisier parts are frightening and powerful, the drones are deep and moving and the ambience is involving and lulling. Anyone who has enjoyed records from Sunn o))) or Earth while harbouring a desire for Tim Hecker, Fennesz or even Brian Eno should check out ‘Colour Wheel’ without delay, it’s really quite wonderful.

Pelican - March to the Sea EP

All the reasons that make Pelican great, and a forerunner in the instru-metal scene, are magnified ten-fold on this EP opus containing two tracks clocking in at nearly 40 minutes. These "gypsy punks," as the band jubilantly describes itself, were once precisely that, a spectacular clash of cultures that smashed the exuberance of Ukrainian gypsy music and the pounding rhythms and exhilarating fire of Slavic folk, with the roar of punk rock. That was then, but now globalization has got them in its grip, and Gogol Bordello set about crashing through national boundaries, reconnecting the cultural links borders have severed. If a fire and fury for life fed the soul of the gypsy, the Slav, and the punk, it also lay at the heart of hard rock and heavy metal, and so into the meat grinder goes incendiary lead guitar. Flamingo's fire lies in its emotive rhythms and dangerous atmospheres, both of which seep into the set as well. You can hear it on "60 Revolutions," and even more magnificently on the stomping "Think Locally Fuck Globally," whose rhythms subtly quicken into a furious flamingo fire, before sweeping into a tribal tattoo, finally flinging itself out in a gypsy swirl. "Not a Crime" careens into Arabesque, "Immigrant Punk" skanks straight into reggae, while "Underdog World Strike" heads underground, interweaving hip-hop, punk, and reggae to gypsy's own roots. Frontman/lyricist Eugene Hütz explains how his own history drives him on the autobiographical "Undestructable," accompanied by a cheery punky reggae backing that defies one not to sing along. And it's not the only one for much of the set is spectacularly anthemic, from the fist-in-the-air fervor of the Oi!-esque "Not a Crime," the fashion-fling command chorus of "Start Wearing Purple," to the life-affirming "Undestructable." One may even start phonetically parroting the lyrics of "Santa Marinella." That latter song is not sung in English, and there's foreign lyrics sprinkled about the set, but the emotional meaning is always clear. A truly universal album that encompasses America's eternal immigrant story, urban living, and a love of life and music that translates into every language on earth. It's the fire in not just the gypsy soul, but the soul of everyone, and Bordello ignite it into a blaze as bright as life itself.

Titan - A Raining Sun of Light and Love for You and You and You

Rest assured, if you give A Raining Sun the chance to peek through your window it’ll offer the world in return. That is, if your world consists of myriad genres including garage/stoner/psych-rock, doom, metal and prog. Anyone not already thrilled to the gills with any of the above genres should avoid this monstrosity with furious abandon. Titan are about as close to delivering a verse/chorus ditty as your local pizza place is to bringing sauted eel to your door. They mean business when they launch into their extended instrumental freakouts, and if you’re not TOTALLY down you’ll end up having one of those bad trips where you swear off your possessions and convert to christianity the next day out of sheer confusion.

That said, these Brooklynites really know how to swing a fookin’ axe, bring the fookin’ bass, clamp down on the fookin’ keys, and drape the fookin’ drums. There’s a lot of fookin’ around afoot, to be sure, and the only element saving Titan from their own wankery is the fact that they’re screwed into each other tighter than an atomic lugnut. Seriously, the HUGE sound the quartet manage is impossibly tubby, the result of a series of homemade basement CD-Rs and improv sessions. -Tiny Mixtapes

Neil Young - After the Gold Rush

In the 15 months between the release of Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere and After the Gold Rush, Neil Young issued a series of recordings in different styles that could have prepared his listeners for the differences between the two LPs. His two compositions on the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young album Déjà Vu, "Helpless" and "Country Girl," returned him to the folk and country styles he had pursued before delving into the hard rock of Everybody Knows; two other singles, "Sugar Mountain" and "Oh, Lonesome Me," also emphasized those roots. But "Ohio," a CSNY single, rocked as hard as anything on the second album. After the Gold Rush was recorded with the aid of Nils Lofgren, a 17-year-old unknown whose piano was a major instrument, turning one of the few real rockers, "Southern Man" (which had unsparing protest lyrics typical of Phil Ochs), into a more stately effort than anything on the previous album and giving a classic tone to the title track, a mystical ballad that featured some of Young's most imaginative lyrics and became one of his most memorable songs. But much of After the Gold Rush consisted of country-folk love songs, which consolidated the audience Young had earned through his tours and recordings with CSNY; its dark yet hopeful tone matched the tenor of the times in 1970, making it one of the definitive singer/songwriter albums, and it has remained among Young's major achievements.

Welcome to the Night Sky - Wintersleep

Wintersleep has been one of the bigger names to come out the Halifax scene in the last few years. While I certainly enjoyed a lot of the work they did on their two previous untitled albums, I don't think they blew me away. Well, after spending time with their latest, and first titled, album, Welcome To The Night Sky, you might as well give me a bad fake Irish accent and cast me opposite Jeff Bridges, because I am indeed blown away this time.

Recorded in Halifax at Sonic Temple studios by Tony Doogan, it was mixed in Glasgow at Castle Of Doom Studios, which, I have to say, is a rather excellent name for a studio. I don't know if it's the UK influence, but Paul Murphy's vocals have more of a lilting, deliberate quality than I remember from the band's previous work. But I think it's a good match for the album's vivid tales of astronauts and excavating whale bones. You always have the feeling that Murphy is holding back, and that creates a tension that takes the songs up a couple notches.

More often then not, when the songs need to be turned loose, the band does heavy lifting. The consistent drumming and fuzzy guitars of Drunk On Aluminum build steadily until breaking into a full shoegazey gallop and then stopping completely. A brief guitar flurry feels like a whole new song before things get quiet again and Murphy finishes the song off. It's quite a ride to open the album. Archaeologists continues that ride with a bouncy bassline and some floaty ambient vocal ad-libs which provide an unstoppably toe-tapping backdrop for a tale about the remains of a winged boy being found in the belly of a whale. It could be some kind of religious metaphor, but honestly I have no idea. I do know it's the first time I couldn't get the lyrics "belly of a whale, belly of a whale, belly of a whale" out of my head.

I think most people will agree the album's centerpiece is Weighty Ghost, which is clearly the catchiest song about losing one's identity I've ever heard. Organ, strummed guitar, handclaps, and community backing vocals are not only a break from the band's heavy, electric sound, but it's also the perfect recipe for a sing-along inducing crowd pleaser at future Wintersleep shows. The catchy, more straight-forward rockers Oblivion and Laser Beams build up to the epic album finale Miasmal Smoke & The Yellow Bellied Freaks. Ordinarily I might tend to regard an eight minute plus song with such an obscure title as a little self-indulgent, but it works here.

The melodic choruses on Welcome To The Night Sky probably make it more accessible to the average listener, but I doubt their longtime fans will have any issue with that. For me, I just think it's a great album, 10 varied, and excellent songs that I've listened many times already and I'm not tired of it at all. Check it out for yourself.

Alright, my second contribution: Gogol Bordello "Super Taranta"

I absolutely love this album and it's definitely worth the time to check it out if you enjoy energetic music.

Gogol Bordello is a group that will never slow down. Album after album, show after show, Eugene Hütz and his group of enthusiastic, disheveled gypsies continue to make fantastically inventive, provocative, smart, raucous music that refuses to be categorized or confined. But Gogol Bordello isn't trying to separate itself from the crowd in order to limit its audience, to attract only a select group of people; instead, their inclusion of so many different musical forms -- besides gypsy, there's also dub, punk, flamenco, Italian folk, and reggae on Super Taranta! -- only serves to broaden their allure, to give them a kind of universal appeal that transgresses geographic and cultural boundaries. It's the pure form, rather than the homogenized, that's stifling and limited. "I wanna walk this earth like it is mine/And so is everyone in our fun-loving tribe/C'mon man, is that real so much to ask?" Hütz asks in his charming dialectic English in the song "Tribal Connection," gently prodding his listeners to move beyond themselves and their cultural restraints and to look towards a globalized society where birthplace and familial origin are only two factors of many. He pokes fun at the U.S. ("Have you ever been to American wedding?/Where is the vodka, where is marinated herring?"), but it's in a lighthearted way, from someone who's benefited from its diversity, and though he's sometimes nostalgic for home (in "Suddenly...(I Miss Carpaty)," for example) it's also clear he has an affection for the country he now lives in. The album itself is Gogol Bordello's usual mix of riotous gypsy rhythms, fast string and accordion work, and loud guitars, but there's also a melodiousness here that comes out more strongly than on the band's previous albums, an underlying darkness that hints at the problems in the world without succumbing to them. "I can't go on, I will go on" Hütz repeats over and over in "Forces of Victory," the tension in his voice and the music working together to express the struggle holding him, and all people, back. This is what he's best at, actually, his ability to convey the common human experience, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, or even language. Hütz, like every great vocalist -- and he is one, although not in the traditional sense -- doesn't rely on only the safety net of words to communicate his message, so even when he sings in Ukrainian or English or whatever else, his intent, his ideas, his passion (and needless to say those of the band, who combine rustic folk progressions with modern punk stylings seamlessly) is always comprehensible. Super Taranta! is the culmination of superb musicianship, endless energy, and an inborn sense of fun and a dedication to progression and innovation, and if that's not something to celebrate and dance to, it's hard to know what is.

Growing - The Sky's Run Into the Sea

Using guitar, bass and "electronics" (who knows what that means specifically... I'd assume a laptop?), Growing's music is an unusual combination of pulsing drones and crushingly heavy and slow riffs. "A Painting" opens the album with ringing guitar harmonics run through a quick delay. It eventually morphs into an oceanic drone, recalling past Kranky releases like Stars of the Lid's The Tired Sounds of... or Windy + Carl's Depths. Just as you think you have a grasp on what this record will do for the next 40 minutes, heavily distorted low-end guitar quickly overtakes the song at the 15 and a half minute mark. Even faster than it came, the distortion leaves, with only the sound of an un-amplified electric guitar playing the riff until the end of the track. Bizarre. And its effect is stunning. "Life in D" mixes the two "sounds" with a light tapestry of amorphous tones providing the texture to a heavily distorted (and wah-ed) bass melody. A guitar joins in, faintly roaring along in the background. Drums and more distorted guitars explode into a short-lived hint at something The Melvins would have extended for a full (and very difficult) album. The guitars fade out, but the drums keep bashing away every few seconds. After a long, awkward period of silence punctuated by a few drum crashes, a massive distorted drone fades in, which is soon joined by another Melvins-esque slow riff. Halfway through the album, "Tepsije (All Music is Folk Music)" comes in and confounds the listener even further. It's basically an ambient-metal instrumental version of The Beatles' "Norwegian Wood." The treated instruments are abandoned for "Southern Rites" which allows the overtones and simplicity of a clean guitar part room to breathe and provides a much needed palette cleanser for the final track, the over 17 minute "Pavement Rich in Gold." Pillowy loops make way for rumbling drones, which then provide the foundation for a song including vocals! The guitars synchronize with the vocal melody, and a synthesizer hums in the background. As if they hadn't confused us enough with their deft synthesis of so many modes, a bit of glitch takes over the song, which is then taken over by an incredible tremeloed and quickly shifting stereo panned guitar.

The bravado of this group is exciting, and the sheer massiveness of their sound sets them apart from the many drone and ambient bands out there. That they walk away from this recording having created such a unique album in a field riddled with rampant hegemony is incredible.  -fakejazz

When I saw Growing last year I started up at the front and about two songs in I had to leave the club and listen from outside because it was so loud it was literally making me dizzy.  I could feel my skull vibrating.

Then again, I've heard my band's shows are that loud these days.  There really is such a big difference when you're standing behind the PA speakers, I'm always turning my amp up because I'm afraid it's not loud enough.

I've seen Growing a couple times now, and I know what you mean ... but the first time I saw them was when they opened for SUNN0))), and after that set I don't think anything compares.  SUNN0))) vibrated my entire body, literally.  I had to keep shaking part of my body around at all times throughout the set, just to keep the vibrations from literally rattling the shit out of me.  I ended up leaving 5 minutes before the set ended because I couldn't stay in the building any longer ... after walking two blocks, I felt them end the set; while I couldn't hear anything anymore, I could feel it when the small of my back stopped buzzing.  TWO BLOCKS AWAY.
