Thank you, yes, we're BACK and BETTER than EVER!

Thanksgiving in America is this week - remember, we've had a couple of the most dramatic situations in this comic happen around this time, so fasten your seatbelts, everyone!

Oh, I can think of an obvious one, but I don't think Jeph would go that route. (Think Elliot + 503. That's all I'm gonna say.)

I don't know what it is but I have a high suspicion that Padma won't be disappearing permanently. Her character seems to fresh and I believe Jeph enjoys writing her character since she is in some ways quite unique from the other characters. It's highly plausible that she will leave but come back soon or under some ulterior plan Jeph has it so that she never leaves to begin with. There's a vast expanse of possible things to happen but I doubt the idea of Padma leaving forever won't happen in the next week of comics. Although giving his track record of big dramatic events happening during Thanksgiving weekend anything can happen and I may just be a grumpy man theorizing what I personally would like to happen and not what actually will happen.

Or she could be followed separately before returning, much the way Faye's visit home went.

Then we get to meet her family.  Along with a wise Grandma, who tells her she really should go follow her own life instead of looking after an old lady who's fine.

Which she decides to do after the funeral...

Yeah, I know, that's not gonna work.  It's why I don't write comics.

That might be interesting, but I don't think Jeph would want to deal with another off-screen death.

Arrggh. You caught me this time. :x

If we really want to see Marten with his "deer in the headlights" face again, then come tomorrow, Padma could reply his call with: "Oh, Hi! Sorry I need to switch off my phone. They just announced that my flight to LA is boarding. Talk to you later."

There was a flash back strip of Faye's dad killing himself from Faye's perspective. The actual death wasn't shown.

I'm not 100% on the etiquette of trying to "guess" or "Pre-empt" the comic. On the one hand, it seems like you guys have a good time. On the other, if I get too clinical about it I might end up sounding like I won't enjoy the ride regardless, which isn't true.

Now, this is completely out of left field, but if you look for possible plot hooks for Jeph to take advantage of, one that has always stood out is that Marten and Padma are from the same place; California. Jeph even took a comic to remind us about it, (the "you're a townie one", it was recent so I won't bother linking). Here's the thing though, while that chapter of Marten's life is gone and over and he would never consider going back there and leaving all his awesome friends, I believe Marten's mother has mentioned once or twice that she still lives there. Imagine the following phone conversation. Please forgive me not infusing the characters with genuine wit or personality.

Veronica "How's the love life dear?" (Possibly with some crude metaphor)

Marten " There was this one girl, but we only spent one night together and she's leaving town"

Veronica "Ha! Atta boy! Casual Sex Heals all Wounds"

Marten "No Mom, that's a bad thing. I like this girl and she's moving to California"

Veronica "What part of California? You could stay here if you wanted to visit her"

Marten "No mom, I'm not flying cross country after a girl again, and I can't get time off work"

Veronica "But do you know where she'll be?"

Marten "(suspicious warning)"

Veronica "What?! I'm just interested in your type these days. I can get set you up with incredibly easy women who look like Dora, that would be cruel!"

So yeah... something like that, followed by Veronica magically "bumping into" Padma. I dunno, it made sense a minute ago, maybe not now that I've written it out.

Ah, I thought you meant the death of an actual character (rather than one who was long dead when the script began).  Also, calling that off screen seems a stretch.

It's fine. What causes problems is something utterly different, namely insisting on what *should* happen next and telling Jeph what to do. Guess away!
(/moderator)

Jeph said Marten is from northern California, and Padma's family is in LA. Martenmom doubtless has contacts in LA, though.

I normally don't like Steve, but in this case he's spot on. And by Jeph's note at the bottom of the strip I think he might agree. :P

I hate to admit it, but I'd probably be exactly the same as Marten. I'd be tossing and turning in my head between being down about the possibility of never feeling that again and "what the hell are you feeling down about, YOU JUST GOT LAID YOU PATHETIC BASTARD!". It takes a special person to be able to pull off one-night-stands without getting emotional and I don't think I'm one of them (probably why I'm still a virgin).

So...  I'm thinking Tuesday's strip will be Padma The Clueless saying something about a "fling".

And then Elliot asking, "What fling?"

And Marten getting Deer In The Headlights.

Gluten. Marten finds out after this encounter that he has hyperCeliac disease and can't be with a baker because she's perpetually covered in gluten and sets off some sort of reaction.

Yeah, I know that's not how it works

As far as speculation goes... I've been trying to stay outlandish.

My wild plotline guess is Padma goes back to LA, only to find out Grandma is healthy as can be and this is all a childish plot by her parents to get her to move back home.  So, too sitcom-ish?

I want him to follow her, so we can meet a whole bunch of new people and get out of Jeph's geographic comfort zone (and into mine, but that's beside the point.) At least he doesn't appear to have confetti-chlamydia from Pintsize's celebrating- but then, it's far more treatable than glitter-herpes.

The real problem is that there wasn't enough brandy to fill the glass.

Steve's definitely right, but he's still being a dick about it.

That could be the next poll:

And Padma's family is...?

Engineers.
And also arch-enemies of the Ellicot-Chathams, no less! What a twist!

Is that simply your dislike of Steve speaking?

No, it's their dislike of chest-bumps.

So, who here is thinking Elliot will somehow find out?
If anyone agrees, what do you think will happen?

You reckon? <--- Australianism. Steve struck me as rather less douchey and dickish than usual today. He really is starting to look very much like Bruce Campbell though. It's a bit scary.

OK, I'm not a fan myself.

But not particularly dickish, I thought.

Americans still reckon too, but mostly in the South. Steve is doing the best-friend-hardass bit: he knows Marten too well and for too long to put up with his crap, so he's being pushy. Problem is, Steve is usually pushy, so he doesn't really come off as being different, just more justified.

Also, I now have the mental image of Steve with a chainsaw for a hand, and you do too.

Don't they sell that in the south?

"Don't be all 'woe is me, I'm the fuckin' king of sadness' when you don't even know if you're gonna see her again"

Yeah, that one line doesn't sit right with me.

No, it's their dislike of chest-bumps.

Actually, I'd probably try to chest-bump Marten myself if I'd heard the news from him, but hadn't figured out he was sad about it yet.
