Jeph did say, though, that Marten's problem is not depression.

Marten's problem, however, is that he is EMO BOY

I am convinced Jeph really does read this forum; that snarky comment about stating EXACTLY what Marten is feeling (oh wait maybe not) seems like amusement at the pages and pages of detailed dissection of the inner emotional states of his characters.

And shouldn't Marigold be Pigpen?  ;)  (Also, I think Raven would be Sally)

As for Marten's feelings, I've been reading a good book on the subject of depression lately.  Sometimes, the things that are "supposed" to make you happy are what make you saddest of all.  The thought pattern goes something like this:  "That should have made me happy.  Why didn't it make me happy?  What's wrong with me?"  The more you dwell on it, the worse you feel.  The same goes for feelings like anxiety and frustration.  Negative feelings have a strong tendency to feed themselves the more you dwell on them.  The people who are the most depressed are the ones that over-think their feelings because even minor sadness that most people would shrug off makes them plunge into depression.  (There's more to it than that, of course, but that's what Marten seems to be doing here)

I don't think Marten thought "That should have made me happy," though. Look at the second last panel. He looks like the cat that got the cream. Until his brain caught up in the last panel.

But, yes, Marigold should be Pigpen, really. :)

I think he should stop overthinking it and just enjoy it. Nothing lasts forever, after all.

I am convinced Jeph really does read this forum; that snarky comment about stating EXACTLY what Marten is feeling (oh wait maybe not) seems like amusement at the pages and pages of detailed dissection of the inner emotional states of his characters.

Yes! I thought the same thing when I read that.

If I'm not mistaken this is the first time we've seen Marty in a tartan pattern shirt before.  I love how vibrant and unique Jeph makes his clothing, even in the early years; it's not something you see a lot of in comics.

I know why Marten is so depressed all the time.  Most of his social circle fits on a single page in his contacts.  Dude must know like 15 people.  And now, a psyduck:

A well taken point (and welcome, new person!).

Faye's address book is similarly short: it was in strip 1377.

So what did Jeph say is Marten's problem, aside from an urgent need for a triple Gibbs-slap?

So, wait, in the course of ~700 strips, they've gone from having phones like that to this:

Does that mean a lot more time's passed than first appears, or is Jeph just not bothering? :)

When I made the comment earlier about Vespavenger being Hannelore's secret twin sister I had the amusing image of Jeph reading that and cursing away because that was an upcoming plot line, and now he'd have to change it.  Not that I actually think that's the case.

Unlike Jeph T. Campbell takes an active part in the forums for his comics, and I've occasionally suspected he's written bits of Penny and Aggie in response to what people have said on the forum for it.

I think it's more a case of QC being like many comics in that it's written in the continuous present.  Time does pass, but the comic always reflects what's happening in the year it's written.  After all if it wasn't written like that he'd be currently writing the comic as if it were set in say 2005, since maybe a year or two has gone by in comic.

In the thread about whether Marten has goals, Jeph said that Marten doesn't know what his goals are. Hence the drift.

You guys, I think Marten's actually allergic to smiling and the last panel is Marten cursing that his throat is closing up (but he can somehow still talk don't question it).

He looks like the cat that got the cream.

Wouldn't that be Padma?

Eh, a barista can't afford phone upgrades as often as a library assistant who catches members of the board in flagrante delicto and maintains, um, discretion about it.

Red text was helpful!  I didn't look at the hands, assumed it was Marten's phone both times.  Either way, yeah, I know people who still have such phones as the one on the left.

I had my crappy flip-phone until April of this year. The novelty of a phone that can do "omg everything" still hasn't quite worn off yet. Although, I think it's finally starting to. But I mean seriously, I have a gameboy emulator on my droid, you just can't beat that!

On Faye.  Can't find the comic, though.

Must be laundry day, 'cause Faye's "girls" wouldn't fit into one of Marten's  shirts...

I have the perfect explanation to all of this! Marten is schizophrenic. Half of him is excited about Padma wanting to see him the other half gets depressed about the minor details. Or it could be like that family guy episode where they went to the universe with everyone having two heads one happy and one sad. Just Marten's both seem to inherit his one head...... I think what I just said makes 0 sense..... oh well that's my post and I'm sticking to it!

Seems our boy got himself worked up to walk away and the bakery girl's drawing him back in. Or maybe he's afraid he's getting pulled into a purely physical relationship which he realizes isn't what he wants.

I was about to say I swear I've seen Angus in a smiliar shirt, but I think that was long-sleeve.

Ah Marten, finally making a decision (even if it's a depressing one), getting a glimmer of hope (or boobies, or both) and now second guessing himself.

Dude, go over there, have fun again and as the afterglow wears off casually ask "so, um... what is this, by the way?".

Well, however you define his mood, I think it's still safe to say that his dwelling on his feelings is getting him down.

OK, Renee likes 'em, but I know I saw Faye in one before - there was an issue with the curvature of the striping...

But my archive-fu is flailing failing.

Edit:  Looks loke Cosette liked them too.  Maybe it's my memory that's failing...

Re: phones: Don't see the issue. Two people have different phones. Shock horror.

Re: "Shit!": If I read this correctly, Marten has finally accepted it's a one time thing in panel 2 (and that's good), only to have that quashed by Padma initiating 'second date'. Just as the guy thinks he has it worked out, along comes Padma to remind him she is not someone who can be worked out.

Re: "Padma! : D": I find it interesting that he has this emoticon by her name, not because I'm surprised (plenty of people do stuff like that), but because he is not the kind of guy who is massively smiley IRL. It's quite telling about people all over. Our textual persona is often not very revealing of our actual mood. A lot of people will constantly use emoticons while their face is as blank as a wall. Not everyone who fills every text or online post with happyfaces is grinning like a cheshire cat as they write, and not everyone who uses sadfaces all the time is blubbing over their keyboard.

Equally, not everyone who forsakes emoticons altogether is an emotionless prick.

Not everyone is terribly expressive facially or verbally, regardless of how strong their feelings might be. Textual expression is in many ways massively simplified, and in an instance like this where he's not expecting to be showing it off to others there can also be a certain degree of released inhibitions. I personally actually saw that in reverse, that Marten does have a big ol' grin or two in him even if it's not generally terribly visible. I think he was probably quite genuinely pleased when he added Padma to the contacts list.

I think Jeph changed Marten's shirt just so we could argue over the semiotics of it.  Because it's all about US!   :-P

I usually just give my phone to the other person and tell them to add themselves. I can see Padma putting in the ": D" when adding herself - she's forward like that.

Yeah, seeing that I suspected she entered the number, or sent it to him from her phone, if that's possible.(I don't own a cell phone, never have, so I don't have a clue.)

I don't get Marten. Can someone explain Marten to me? I've lost my grasp on Martenology, I need a seminar to refresh all of this. Shit.

I love when girls do this, because you know it's a real number.

There's this cartoon strip about him you can read that gives a pretty good overview...  wait...

I see what you did there. Bad thing is, the strip is what made me lose my grasp on Martenology in the first place.

Seriously folks, what the hell? People aren't allowed to wear different shirts once in awhile?  :psyduck:

Dude, go over there, have fun again and as the afterglow wears off casually ask "so, um... what is this, by the way?".

This. I would say Marten should instigate this talk before more sexytimes, but that runs the risk of making Padma less horny. I don't think Marten wants that.
