In Germany, eggs are commonly sold in packages of 10 or 6, sometimes 4. Google images overview.
You can buy single eggs (or as much as you want) on weekly fresh food markets in most towns and some bigger cities (or directly from producers in rural areas).

Are eggs sold loose anywhere in the USA?

Yes, but they are hard boiled.
Oh, hard boiled eggs are sold in single items here in germany, too. They are only available around easter, though, and already colored, too.

Aye, they usually offer different empty egg cartons to put them in. Might depend on the area you live in, me and friends can tell for northern and western areas.

Supermarkets, at least in North America, are laid out to try to make you want to buy more stuff.  Just look at the areas around the checkouts, which are filled with magazines, candy, soft drinks and other things you might purchase on impulse..

Some larger chain grocery stores sell eggs by the half-dozen and dozen-and-a-half, as well as the usual dozen - but never less than six.

To me, Hanners is giving that "You're $#!++!\' me!" look at Momo. Classic.

I know, right??? At the very least, she could have called Hanners to let her know of the predicament and Hanners could have either bought eggs or even a package of cookies.  :-P

You'd think in this day and age you'd be able to buy eggs singly.  A lot of people probably won't go through even a half dozen eggs before they go bad.
It generally takes an incredibly long time for eggs to go bad. I am single. I buy eggs by the dozen. I don't eat eggs every day or even every week. I have never had a carton go bad.

You can buy eggs by the half-dozen now, though, at least in Canada.

Yay Marigold! Always great to see a "funny" strip to cut through the drama and angst.

I can rarely go into a supermarket without buying an extra something or other, and I'm not female. They MANIPULATE YOUR MIND, man. They get in your head.

In Norway, I have bought eggs in packages of 6 (2 by 3), 9 (3 by 3), and 12 (2 by 6).

I've seen the shops sell them in packages of 18 (3 by 6), 20 (4 by 5), and 30 (5 by 6), but I have never needed that many ...

I've heard of packages of 10, but I have never seen them.

And the only place where you might be able to buy a single egg, is from the farmer.  A supermarket would be the last place I'd look.  But hey, if our dear Farmer has other ideas ...

Why aren't dozens sold n a 3x4 package?  It's be more efficient and stable.

...because it would be harder to cut in half than the 2x6 packages.  I've even seen them with dotted lines in the middle, and most are more thinly constructed in the center so they can be broken torn in half by the shopper who only wants 6.

Many supermarkets are like that, I dare say most of them. It's really smart to put some of the most basic stuff like milk and eggs as far away as possible so people are forced to go through a large amount of products they didn't even think of buying at all.

That female stereotype definitely works for my mom. She just can't buy one thing form the supermarket.

Towards other people I'm very generous, I like to give.... But I'm not really generous with myself so when I go to buy something... I just go and buy that something because I don't like spending money on something I didn't think of spending on.

The trick is to open onto the produce section.  To most people, fresh produce looks much more appealing than in their heads, so they put it out so you'll see it first when you're there for something else.  They then put their top small-purchase sellers (baking staples and snack food, IIRC) either at the back-left or in the center aisles, where people will go through the most merchandise to find them.

Here I can buy Eggs by the Tray (2.5 Dozen), Extra Box (1.5 Dozen, basically a dozen Eggs with half a dozen thrown in for free), a standard dozen carton and a half dozen carton.  There is also a carton of extra large (size 8 Eggs), but that only contains 10 Eggs.

We also have a choice of Battery, Caged or Free Range as well as Grain Fed.

Amen to that! When you understand that every aspect of the supermarket as a concept - including the placement of the products on the shop floor as well as the shelf height, the advertisements, discounts, two-for-one deals, muzak, and probably more that I don't even know of - has the sole purpose of getting you to spend more money than you were initially planning to, you're much less likely to buy things you don't need.

(Also, the most common sizes for boxes of eggs here are 2x3 and 2x5. Bulk sized cartons are 5x5. I keep a 2x5 box and then refill it with a 2x3 box once I'm down to 1 or 2 eggs.)

And as someone said earlier, the females in QC have full lips, so that was a giveaway too  :-P (don't remember the goth guy though...)

registered just to say that this is pure fiction:

a girl can not get into a store for one item and just buy that one item. There will always be something else on sale or something they really really really needed.
You obviously haven't been reading the comic long if you believe that Mari (or any girl in the strip, really, from what we've seen thus far) falls into the 'stereotypical girl' category.

A good example would be the Chinese actress Vivian Wu.  Given how much acting she's done in Western films and TV I'm surprised she was never convinced to get breast implants by some slick talking agent.

Considering QC is loosely connected to the Walkyverse along with Something Positive, Girls with Slingshots, Penny and Aggie, Diesel Sweeties, and who knows how many other webcomics -- in other words, the webcomic world's equivalent of the Westphall universe -- medium awareness surprises you?

I love how Marten's the bitch in that scenario. Appropriate, really. He's already being a teenage girl here, flopping onto the couch backwards with the phone :P

I just had a different sense of foreboding.

Padma's tired?  I wonder if she's avoiding Marten, or if she really is  tired.

And maybe a little nauseous, too?   :-o

Nah, she's just avoiding Marten. Hope Marten enjoyed his last bedroom romp with Padma, 'cause it really was his last romp with her.

No more nooky for Marten!

...no. No.

And Jeph's already said he won't do a pregnancy storyline, he hates them.

I probably won't see Jeph on his travels (depends where in Aus he goes) but it'd be really funny if he's here when I'm in NZ next month and in NZ when I'm back here.

This kind of reminds me of Glooooooom.

And I wonder if the Forebodings mean anything, or whether this was just for one-time comic effect?

Ok, now I've stopped wondering, and I definitely think that they mean something. :P

Especially if Marten has to start double and triple-checking the arrangements.

Generally, when someone has an actual excuse and really does want to see the person, they'll offer a replacement time, like Padma did in the comic.

Though I do expect Marten to mope and bring it up with his friends who inform him that being female, "I'm tired" is code for "I'm on my period"

Or code for...

"I'm tired".

Gender stereotypes, whee!

You're right, she did offer an alternative, and that's a good thing....but 'Friday' sounds so far away.  It's not like she said 'tomorrow.'  If you're really just tired tonight....you should be rested by tomorrow.  Shouldn't you?  I really need to know what day of the week today is in the QC universe to fully assess the implications of her not being available tonight!

I've been in Padma's situation before when you think the guy isn't as serious as you are and your response is to get all cool and casual so you don't get hurt.  One of two things can then happen...he panics and starts the hot pursuit...or he thinks you're not that interested either and the budding relationship fizzles.   :|

If she throws out another excuse not to see Marten when Friday comes around, it'll be a bad sign. It'll be an even worse sign if she stops taking his calls.

At that point he'll be expected to take the hint and stop "bothering" her...

She could be working until Friday? We're not sure what day this is in QC, right? It could be Wednesday so Friday isn't that far away. Or it could be Monday and seem very far away.

Maybe we should hope Marten's foreboding feelings won't make him go to tSB and cause a mini-scene. Discussing love-life problems at work isn't fun for any one, especially for people not involved in the discussion but in hearing range of it. Damn, I hate my coworkers sometimes.

And yet she probably is blowing him off...

Why would that be a problem?
