Well I'm in big-ass trouble then; I've been wearing white socks my whole friggin life, and currently WITH black sneakers. Didn't think anything was wrong with it, except sometimes it does kinda remind me of those cultists that all killed themselves.
I didn't think white socks EVER went out of style (in casualwear, of course).

How can Marten possibly be so dense!  The girl is screaming for him to give her some sign that he really cares! I could just give him a good shake!

Oh...and Faye, Faye, Faye....*shakes head*  Funny though!

This moment of the week poll misses THE moment of the week: Padmas behind in Martens thoughts while he was disarming the bomb.

Ugh... Dairy products.
I can drink pure milk by the liter ... most asians cant, though. See for example lactose intolerance on Wikipedia.

Oh, and this. Interesting, only 0.3% of Basques are lactose intolerant - but 100% of native americans.

Wait, did Padma say she "wouldn't be fun to hang out with" because Marten said "you probably wouldn't have liked me back then"? I'm as clueless as he is.

Clearly 84 of the Basques were not lactose intolerant, as was 75% of the 85th. :-P

I love Wikipedia, but man, it is riddled with badness.  Read the sources.  In this case, I find for Basques, in table 3 of the source, that 91.7% of them displayed lactase persistence.  I guess that would make 8.3% (7 of them) more-or-less lactose intolerant.  I don't find the 0.3% anywhere in the source.

And what do you know – this error crept into Wikipedia when an 008 was mistaken for 000 by a user removing "preceding zeroes".  Time to get me another edit on the English Wikipedia ...

God no. That is a terrible solution, especially because we have no reason to assume that it's even true. Sure, he is infatuated with her, but does he love her? I think that's a bit too much, too soon. Also: she's still leaving, so all that does is make her feel worse about it.

Deadly....but oh so delicious.

I ca never help myself when it comes to cheese, ice cream, sour cream (oh god sour cream i love you) but i could do without plain old milk if i had to. oh yeah, and lactaid is probably the most useless product on the face of the planet.

At the risk of crossing a line here, if a girl tells you she's "feeling down", NEVER respond "Well maybe I can feel you up". It's not going to be taken as a joke.

I really do think that Marten is doing enough to show her that he likes her and isn't just in it for the sex. It's natural for him to not be trying to LOOK for hints or signs, though, since he has set his mind on the "she's leaving, this is just a fling" mode. He's doing this so HE won't be hurt-- and probably because that's what he thinks she wants. If you know (or think you know) that someone is only ever going to look at you as a fling or someone to have fun with for a short period of time, you are going to go out of your way to NOT see any hints that they may actually like you or want more from the relationship. If you get your hopes up, you could a) be hurt and b) lose what little connection you do have to the person.

Plus, Padma has presented herself to him as someone who speaks/acts first and thinks later. I'm sure he assumed that if she wanted more or was unhappy with something that she would have SAID it. She didn't seem like the type of person who would just run off and disappear on the person. If I were Marten, I would be completely confused at this point. Sometimes he does silly things, but I don't think he has done anything "wrong" in this situation.

And if he tells her that he loves her at this point, I'm going to...take a deep, calming breath. Too soon for that.

I guess not...

It's wrong, I know for us to do this to men...but it's like you want the guy to ask, "Why're you down?"

Of course, initially you'd say, "I don't know," (*siiiiiiiiiigh*) and if he didn't totally give up at that point, you'd spill the beans and probably say more than you meant to.

I have no idea why we do this!   I suspect it is uncertainty about his feelings, and in this case...Padma tested the waters with the "Wish I'd met you a year ago' thing...and that didn't go so well.  If I was her I might be pretty mortified, thinking I'd totally embarrassed myself.

When I was younger I'm pretty sure I totally have acted the way Padma is!!!  My partner says I'm better now at saying what I want.  But I think it's because I'm secure about how he feels about me.

Neither of them is doing anything wrong.

Both are trying to protect themselves and the other from getting hurt.

Given the situation, and the expectations at the beginning of this...whatever it is, they're both doing the prudent thing.

The thing is, sometimes, by doing something other than the prudent thing the payoff can be much greater for both partners.

The situation that Marten and Padma find themselves in is like an inverted Prisoner's Dilemma.

For both of them to get what they both seem to want, at least one of them is going to have to take a risk and open their mouth.

It's reasonable to have this reaction if you're insecure about the relationship.
However, in my estimation, while it may not be wrong per se, it will be a problem the culprit of the mind game is creating.  The disservice one does to one's partner (and, by extension, oneself) by not being clear sort of disqualifies one from a stable long-term relationship.  I.e., until one can accept one's own insecurity without letting it dominate important interactions, the relationship will probably not be stable.
Of course, stability isn't necessarily the most important aspect of a long-term relationship, whatever the common wisdom is.  I'd say this is because there are plenty of other "problems" that can jeopardize stability.

In trying to keep from getting hurt, they're making it worse for each other.

I'd bet that Padma is going through the GLOOOOOOOM routine at work or home or wherever, just as much as Marten is.

ARG to this whole quote tunnel!

ilikefishfood, can you please not use "we" when talking about people talking around a point? Women are not a monolith. Most people say "nothing" when that's a big lie at one point or another I believe - the problem lies in expecting the other person to be a mind reader/teaching them to disbelieve you and have to go through a whole rigmarole to get an answer.

I am finding this whole "Marten is missing something/should be doing something different" thing... weird. When you joke around a lot with a person you are liable to miss it when they say something serious (the "if only I'd met you a year ago" thing) and I think he responded in the only reasonable way to her saying she was feeling down. Forcing yourself on someone when they say they want to be left around may be romantic in some people's realities but I am not a fan of normalising disrespecting people's boundaries. Even if they secretly actually wanted you to do it.

(But have I avoided getting shouted at for trying to express a plain and scientifically verifiable fact?)
Entirely, as far as I am concerned. :-)

Of course, it might have been that, biology aside, you prefer your beverages free of secretions from a large stinky mammal.

That may be harder than you think. Ever had an Energy Drink? There's a reason it's called Red Bull. Not to mention a lot of food colorings, gelatine... There is a whole lotta stuff they make outta them large stinky mammals. And bugs.

So they say.

All I know is that when you're gulpin' down an energy drink, you're gettin' an amino acid originally derived from the naughty bits of a bull.

I like my caffeine, but there are limits as to how far I'll go to get it.

What's naughty about bile?

I was actually talking about the popular myth that the substance is derived from bull testicles, actually...
