I finally saw Big Hero 6, and... it's a masterpiece.

It's an absolute work of art. Possibly the best animation Disney has ever made and that includes Pixar. What a moving, funny, astonishing, original, beautiful piece of work.

Saw Scorsese's Silence today. The second half was somewhat interesting, but the first half was so slow. And we're talking about a near-three hour movie.

Just watched "The Nice  Guys" on my plane ride back from Paris.  It was hysterical!  Its hard to explain.  Basically a hit-man (Russel Crow) and a terrible alcoholic PI (Ryan Gosling) take on a missing person case with the PI's preteen daughter in tow.  Comedy ensues.  It almost seems like a serious buddy cop movie from the 1970s but if the two leads were Abbot and Costello.  Just be aware there is a lot of female nudity in it since the missing person character is also a porn actress.  I will not spoil it here as it is worth watching and a decent modern buddy cop movie!

LEGO Batman. Of all the movies I've watched... that was one of them. I'd give it about 4/10, and that's being generous.

On the flip side, I went with a friend who I rarely get to see in person, which more than made up for the disappointing film. :)

I did, but Batman was too daft for me. For quite a while I was wondering where it was going. But then I've heard other people say that they enjoyed it more than the first one. Different strokes, I guess.

My contacts are giving good reviews of Lego Batman - "not quite as good as the Lego Movie, but a worthy follow-up" kind of thing.

Anyway, I just watched Kubo and the Two Strings which I missed when it was in theatres here, through illness.  I thought it was fantastic.

I saw Lego Batman today and I found it to be quite an enjoyable film, quite funny too.

Now, that said I did feel that some of the message of the film quite forced and at times childish (surprise, its a family film), but it did capture the essence of what Batman is supposed to be, a clear sign that the people who made the film knew the subject material, more so than a certain director, whose name rhymes with Hack Hider.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2 - Sword of Destiny - A genuinely good sequel that actually tried to continue the story from the first film (I'm not surprised to learn that the films are based on a five-volume book series). Michelle Yeoh did a great job of playing the Last One Standing from the previous story, burdened by guilt and memories...

Regrettably, it seems to have been a Netflix exclusive. Not intentionally; apparently several cinema chains with IMAX screens bailed on the film for some reason (possibly that they thought that showing in IMAX format a film thought also suitable for streaming on mobile devices was somehow 'betraying the format').

However, I suspect that the real problem was that the somewhat challenging moral of the story, implied somewhat after the middle and end set-piece battles in a "blink and you'll miss it" manner (still interesting if you get it though), was believed too complex for their presumed target audience of an oriental martial arts fantasy film.

Which is absolutely ridiculous when you consider many films end up on Netflix, why would the chain care if it was planned that way from the start?

Saw Kong: Skull Island today, and I have to say, I quite enjoyed it. Its possibly as good as the previous entry in the Monsterverse, 2014's Godzlla.

Now, it does improve on some of the complaints from Godzilla, namely Kong appears fairly early on and remains a constant presence during the film rather than actually appearing in the last third. And the film does go onto setting up the rest of the Monsterverse, particularly with the post credit scene.

Essentially I'm looking forward to the King of the Monsters.

I finally saw Beauty and the Beast. The 1991 version that is. I rather liked it. I also took this screenshot because holy shit.

"We can't stop here. This is bat country."

If I had one complaint, it'd be the title song. I just didn't like it at all. Also, it felt strange and unnatural to actually refer to them as "beauty and the beast" within the movie itself. The rest of the songs were great fun, though.

I'm gonna see the remake weekend after next.

Saw the Belko Experiment. It was better than I expected. People trapped together being made to kill each other by mysterious force plots are a pretty well known quantity by now. This was not the best one I've seen but it's not the worst either.

Saw Get Out a couple weeks ago and it was so good. Like... So good.

Blumhouse are frustratingly good at making low budget minimum location character/dialogue driven films. As a filmmaker I am both delighted for and incredibly envious of them.

Just started on The Expanse, Season 2 - Damn, Frankie Adams makes a magnificent Bobby Draper! And the visuals are just *squuuueeeeeee!*

Dominick Tipper is equally superb as Naomi Nagata, and Shohreh Aghdashloo as Crisjen Avasaralla is perfect - overall, casting is awesome on that show, with the minor peeve that Steven Strait is a little too tall by comparison to the Belter & Martian characters (what's the point in busting your ass casting 1.8m tall women for characters that are supposed to stand close to 2m due to growing up in low/microgravity when you then cast a 1.88m male supposed to play a short-ish Earther? But seeing as they cast loads of very buff Belters, who are actually supposed to be extremely tall and beyond skinny, I guess they gave up on the 'tall, skinny Belter'-look ... I just liked how in the books, the physical differences between Inners and Belters made the racism between both visceral in so many little ways. Like how Naomi isn't quite Holden's 'type' initially, and how his falling in love with her parallels his maturing as a person, from happy-go-lucky-prettyboy to caring captain)

And while I love Wes Chatham's Amos, in my mind, Amos will always be black ... (though I like that the only two "Northern-European-whites" amongst the main cast play the nutjobs).

Speaking of Wes Chatham's Amos - The great thing is that he's actually more threatening when his manner and mimic are harmless and friendly (Ok, that's mostly because his manner doesn't fit with the stuff coming out of his mouth in those situations). It's not the "British Actor being a menacing Hollywood Villain"-politeness - Chatham manages to let his Amos look like he really believes that violent shit happening is simply normal and people shouldn't get so damn' upset about his killing their friends, or loudly pondering the ups and downs of shoving Holden off the Roci without his helmet ("Naomi wouldn't like that") ...

EDIT: And Miller's gun is a nod to Togusa's Mateba

I've watched the first season of The Expanse, but the second has not been released in Australia yet. I think the series is very good, and in fact possibly the best TV science-fiction I have seen. There are things that disappointed me, but then nothing is perfect.

I have not read the books, so I didn't come to the TV series with preconceptions about the characters. I suppose the problem with the divergent physical types of human growing up on Earth, Mars or the Belt is simply that actors, especially in American television, just don't get on in the profession if they don't conform to conventionally attractive norms, but the casting doesn't really doesn't make much effort in this area.

1) GET! THEM! NOW!
2) The Earther-Marsian-Belter differences - and the intense racism that builds on it - is a major topic in "Leviathan's Wake". Right on the first few pages, Naomi is described from Holden's POV ("at close to 2m, she was towering over Holden") and right in the next sentence, it's indicated that "he never got quite used to the Belter look", despite spending a substantial part of his adult life in space, and amongst Belters & Martians.

It adds a bit extra ... flavour ... to their later romance - but nothing against Dominique Tipper's Naomi. She's brilliant, methinks.

Bobby Draper is described as 2m and being easily as capable physically as Amos, probably more so - which is why they went and found themselves a 1.8m Kiwi actress who boxes in her free time.

While I am somewhat disappointed with some of the casting choices (Holden in particular, and Amos to a lesser degree, who I always pictured as black for some reason), overall they've done a great job as far as acting goes. Unfortunately, a lot of the physical characteristics described in the books would be really difficult to pull off on a television budget at a high enough quality to not be distracting.

Me too! In my mind, Amos look(s/ed) like the Gorillaz' Russell Hobbs. Something like this:

or this:

Though I have to add that Wes Chatham's Amos does pretty much the same for me ... except for being pigmentally challenged.

But I can't remember whether he was actually described as being black ... (at his first appearance in "Leviathan's Wake", he's described as having 'dark skin') - Then and again, I can't remember Corey making much of a deal about anyone's racial characteristics (maybe with the exception of Bobby) ... maybe intentionally? Maybe with the significant differences in body types between Earthers, Martians and Belters, skin-colour simply became less meaningful as a proxy for in/outgroup. Or maybe there's been so much intermixing between 'races' due to small population sizes of colonies in space that people have simply given up on trying to classify each other by race, because it got too complicated - similarly to contemporary American whites, who seem to have retained very little of the tribal identifications of their ancestors ethnic groups; which still persist to some degree in modern Europe.

London Road

No, I've never seen anything quite like it.  The film tells the story of the road in the town of Ipswich in Suffolk in which a recent serial killer lived - the reactions of the residents and how they coped with what was going on.  The words are taken from interviews with the residents, and then turned into song, of a sort.  It started life as a stage musical, and was so successful that rather than simply rely on their film of the production, they (The National Theatre) went ahead and made a full-on theatrical film (still as a musical, of course).  Some of the cast transferred, but they brought in some bigger names like Tom Hardy and Olivia Colman to bulk up the appeal.  The result is quite compelling, once you've puzzled your way through the opening titles, though a couple of the scenes outstay their welcome just slightly.  Some of the interviewees are quite shameless, like the one who wants to shake the killer by the hand for killing five of the prostitutes who were bringing down the area.  I suppose it's not great; but it's good and worthwhile.  So, recommended as an interesting curiosity, which also gives a thought-provoking view of a real event.

I just watched the live action remake of Disney's "The Jungle Book."  It was quite good.  It was similar to the original in certain areas but by and large it was a different movie! The cast was great! Idris Elba, Ben Kingsley and Lupita Nyong'o were the strongest.  Neel Sethi did alright but did fall into a few pit falls here and there but serviced the role well.  The weakest casting was probably, and I know I'll catch some flak for this, is Bill Murray.  I'm sorry but it just felt out of place and I think they could have found a better Baloo.  Same with ScarJo as Kaa

King Louie was a little jarring but considering how Louie is played I think Christopher Walken was a decent choice.

I found it interesting that there were some elements of Indian culture presented.  Mowgli is surely representative of the "Untouchable" whereas the predator characters were Kshatriyas and the elephants served as Brahmins.  The use of Kaa to fill in Mowgli's origins was a nice touch, if a bit cliche in providing Mowgli additional motivations on going after Shere Khan in the climax of the film.  Unlike other Disney movies, being in the Jungle here was always unnerving (but in a good way).  The Jungle truly is a scary place and Shere Khan in this movie is perhaps the most fearful Disney villain to date in my opinion.  Any time he shows up he steals the show. I wont spoil anything but he is genuinely terrifying.

All in all its well worth the watch. Its similar to the original while being different enough to be a new experience. Highly advise watching this (its on netflix right now!).

Is it worth watching if I've never seen the original, or should I watch the original first?

I just returned from Guardians of the Galaxy as well. It was fantastic. It is one of those rare sequels that actually surpasses the first.

Honestly, I enjoyed it, but I'm apparently the only one who thought the first was better. I wasn't disappointed, in that I didn't expect it to surpass the first one, but it wasn't a Winter Soldier scenario.

I'm hearing variations of this a lot. I think it was just as good as the first, and will probably get better on subsequent viewings because Gunn packed this thing to the gills with small jokes and references, but it didn't have the, "WOW where did this come from," punch of the first. Everybody knows that Pratt is great as Quill now. Everyone knows that Bautista has astoundingly great comic timing. A lot of what elevated the first from just great to classic was the surprise factor of how well it worked. Now we get another serving of the same wonderful stuff and, while it's still the best stuff around, it can't blow our minds like before.
