I need a French film to watch (in french) for a project.  Any ideas?

Might I also suggest Delicatessan, Amelie and City of Lost Children? All great movies by the same director/s.

Melancholia...

Holymotherofwhatintheunholybluefuck?

 :psyduck:

Suffice it to say, I'm not sure how this movie makes me feel, but it did resonate with me, and I will likely have to watch it again just to figure out why it is driving me so crazy.  Oh, and Kirsten Dunst shows her breasts.  Amusingly enough, this was not a particularly good or bad thing, I was more like, "meh, breasts," so whatever.  But yeah, as these kinds of movies go, it was interesting, if slightly confusing.

I've seen an online critic review Melancholia and it seems like something I don't want to watch right now.

Saying that, she has a nice pair on her.

Equilibrium

Whoever decided to make a mish mash of Fahrenheit 451, 1984 and a Martial Arts film should be rewarded with the best stupid idea trophy. I had forgotten how much fun this movie was.

I'm having a hard time picturing Jet Li in a screenplay by Bradbury and directed by Orwell...then again, The One was kinda quirky like that...or is Equilibrium a different breed of quirky?

It's really just a totally straight faced mish mash of exactly what I said, but with Christian Bale as the action star. Also a lot of guns shooting people.

It's just a wonderfully stupid concept.

Equilibrium is riddled with pot holes, is absolutely shit-in-your-hands-and-throw-it retarded, but it's a huge amount of fun.

I suspect that PLOT HOLES was intended there, but given that whoever is responsible for its creation was probably incredibly high the whole time it was being made, POT HOLES may have a different but accurate meaning here.  Yeah, it's great idiotic fun to watch.  Brainless, but fun as shit nonetheless.

Watched the Thing remake, just makes me miss practical effects, the cg in this film is so goofy. Everything else is pretty forgetable.

Also watched Childs plays 2 & 3, pretty good, in a bad way. The pacing is great in that you are never bored, there's always something happening and they're over before it gets old. I was surprised at the direction of the 3rd film, moving away from horror and being pretty much a comedy. I vaugely remember bride of chucky being full comedy, I'llw atch that agin soon.

Yeah, personally The Thing prequel was a pretty good attempt (not necessarily a success) and I think lined up surprisingly well with the lead in to John Carpenter's film. I just felt like they relied way too much on the CGI and on the monster itself. It certainly didn't compare.

I got stuck watching the Tinkerbell movie with my four year old niece, where they travel into winter and her wings get all shiny and shit, and she has a sister, and they ride a bobcat, and her wing breaks, and they cross streams like in Ghostbusters, and it is TRIPPY AS FUCK. Stereotypical Disney, all hopped up on acid when they storyboard.

Okay, I watched C'est Arrivé Près de Chez Vous better known to English speakers as Man Bites Dog.

I can see why so many people like the movie but I'm not sure I understood the comedy aspect of it.  I understand it was fully satirical however I definitely found myself unable to laugh after

Honestly, it sounds like you got it perfectly well. It's just a very well done satirical dark comedy taken to a logical and incredibly uncomfortable extreme. The movie being over was one of the most relieving moments I've ever had watching a film.

No worries. If you want something more in depth, and I'll assume you got some of this by the movie descriptions, is that the movie is so uncomfortable not just because of the extremes it takes it, but also because it's not actually much more exaggerated than the media we consume on a near daily basis. The sexualized violence, the fact that there is a market for it in the first place, that it's actually commercialized and how the market for it starts a cycle of the viewers and marketers perpetuating and glorifying the violence necessary for their entertainment.

It's an amazing but incredibly uncomfortable and depressing film.

Bride of Chucky - Much better than I remember, the goofiness is balanced out by some brutal kills and a dark tone.

Seed of Chucky - One of the worst movies I've ever seen, what was Don Mancini thinking? Everything is just wrong, the humour isn't funny, the storyline is boring and too confined to one place, and it ignores so much of what came before it. The plot holes in regards to the series canon are just glaring and make me scream it the tv. I can't beleive this ever got made.

Reason I rate the Saw franchise so comparatively highly? Because of how rock solid its continuity is by horror standards.

I'm still of the opinion that Saw should have stopped with 2. 1 was great, though a bit sillly what with a advanced stage terminal cancer patient kidnapping people 1/3 - 1/2 his age, and 2 was a pretty good follow up. The following movies are just really terrible torture porn.

Edit: We've been re-watching "Malcolm in the Middle" recently and I had forgotten how good this show was.

I think torture porn is unfair to call Saw. It's got a fair amount of plot and does make the effort for continuity, which isn't what the torture porn fans want to see. Whereas it's too graphic for people who might be interested in the plot otherwise. Also John had helpers to do a lot of work for him.
I'd say films like Hostel are more like torture porn, even if they aren't as graphic they definitely don't give a shit about the plot. Although I couldn't even finish those so maybe they are more plotty or graphic than I realise. Then there's the budget variety which are just some mates with a camera and fake blood which somehow got a release on video constantly in the 80's.

The difference is in what kind of torture porn they are to me. The Saw sequels are as much emotional and psychological torture as it is physical torture. They keep canon going, but that doesn't make them not torture porn. It just makes the slightly classier torture porn.

Hostel is just terrible all around.

I guess I differ in opinion because "classy" and "torture porn" are not words that mesh in my head. I understand what you mean though. To me, torture porn or exploitation films are usually of a (subjectively) lower standard, in terms of technical creation as well as characters and story.

Also I saw Saw 3 first and hated it. Partner made me watched them in order and liked them a lot but he had a lot of enthusiasm for them.

Harold and Maude
Kind Hearts and Coronets
The 39 Steps
Casablanca
Our Man in Havana
The Man in the White Suit
The Third Man
The Sting
Hanna and her Sisters
Chocolate
The Piano

just a few off the top of my head... most in black and white.  Every one a gem, guaranteed.

"Forbidden Kingdom". It's too bad that Li Bing Bing's character didn't get more screen time or development, and really bad that the Monkey King reminded me of Neelix.

EDIT: "Beautiful Creatures". Chunks of formula horror movie dropped into a touching coming of age story.

Finally sat down and watched Wreck-it Ralph.  That was a great movie.  Not a great animated movie, a great movie, period.

I particularly like this little tidbit:

In case it's hard to see or make out, the grafitti on the left reads, AERITH LIVES and on the right is ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US.

I caught them on the second viewing, and laughed out loud, with my kids wondering why I was cracking up at a ride on the escalators.

Today I finally watched Django Unchained.

Beware, this really is an evil story spoiler:
(click to show/hide)

And yes, I have to agree, Equilibrium is totally fun, but has some serious logic issues. The more often you watch it, the more you discover.

Some other movies I've been watching lately were Pulp Fiction, Inglourious Basterds, American Psycho and A Clockwork Orange.

Hmm. I see a pattern in these movies which slightly scares me… wtf…

Also I watched every single Dexter episode in the course of 3 months…

It took me a while to come round to Vanellope but I personally don't enjoy Sarah Silverman and her voice grates on me. I honestly didn't even know she was in the film till the credits. The voice is particularly grating when it's extra high-pitched and the character is as bratty as they are, but later the brattiness got endearing because of reasons.

@Welu:
Quote
Vanellope: "Please! I just wanna race like you guys!"
Taffyta: "You will never be a racer, because you're a glitch - and that's all you'll ever be!" *Pushes*
Quote
Ralph: "Look, kid.. I tried to warn ya. I can't make things, I just break--"

Ralph: "..You do?"
Vanellope: "I love it.. I love it! I love it! I love it! Look, it's got a real engine! And look at these wheels! *Mwah* I love it! I finally have a real kart!"
Quote
Ralph: "So let me get this straight. You don't know how to drive."
Vanellope: "Well, no, not technically. But, I just though that--"
Ralph: "What did ya think? 'Oh, I'll just- I'll just magically win the race, just cuz I really want to!'?"
Vanellope: "Look, wise guy, I know I'm a racer. I can feel it in my code."
Quote
Vanellope: "I found that secret opening, and now I live here. See? Look, look, look. Welcome to my home! I sleep in these candy wrappers. I bundle myself up like a little homeless lady."
Ralph: "By yourself? With all this garbage around you..?"
Vanellope: "Well, yeah.. I mean, everyone here says I'm just a mistake and that I wasn't even supposed to exist. What do you expect?"
Ralph: "Listen, kid.. I know it's none of my business, but why do you even stick around this game?"
Vanellope: "You really don't know anything, do you? Glitches can't leave their games.. It's one of the joys of being me.."
Not to mention:
I was more or less crying for a hundred minutes straight after the first bit. Let's say I found her more than a little bit relatable.

Marina Abramovic: The Artist is Present (trailer here)

This docu follows performance artist Marina Abramovic as she prepares a retrospective of her work and new performance at the MoMA in NYC. I was really curious to see this because not only do I find Marina and her work very intriguing, but I actually happened to be in NY when this was taking place and saw her and the retrospective live (although I wasn't able to actually sit with her). I really liked the documentary, it's a good insight into her life and work and there are some really touching moments in there, especially concerning her old lover and partner Ulay.

I watched The Dark Knight Rises...that movie is very good, assuming you've never seen or read anything about Batman that WASN'T starring Christian Bale. Because they took Batman Canon, kidnapped it, tied it up in a warehouse, beat it with a crowbar, then blew up the warehouse. Wow.

I also watched Fast 5. Excellent movie, marvelously performed. No qualms whatsoever.

I haaaated Dark Knight Rises.

Why I hated it is (partly) incorporated into this article:
