I just watched Prometheus and I thought it was pretty okay. I thought it had a lot of potential but they never really explored it.

I wanted to like prometheus, I really did. I still love the ship and the suits.

But i hated:
- the religious push
-the squid scene. It was weird, uncomfortable, and unnecessary.
-it still makes zero sense WHY robo-douche killed that guy
-for the love of the FSM if you're on a hostile alien world with an atmosphere incompatible with your own, don't just toss your helmets aside first chance you get! A sane person wouldn't take them off to begin with, much less leave them at the entrance of what you know to be a giant ruin
-and, of course, this:

All these things together made for a movie I simply did not enjoy.

It had such potential.

Such a shame.

At the time that came out I didn't understand what they were talking about, but watching that scene made me pretty angry.

Watched mission impossible ghost protocol earlier today.
Was pretty good, even if the geek inside me flinched at some of the "tech" being used.

So, Hemlock Grove gets worse. First several episodes were great B material, but then it just kind doesn't go anywhere interesting. It does a poor job of hiding the mystery and leaves a shit load of stuff unanswered, or even let's you be aware of why it's come up in the first place.

Thankfully, Ju-on: The Curse is just as good as I remember.

I just rewatched Saving Private Ryan, that movie guts me right in the feels with a bayonet every single time. Then it shoves a morphine syringe in my chest and tells me to go kill Nazis, then it gets me in the feels right at the end.

O$ne of my most watched movies, love it, specially near the end. If you like that watch Band of Brothers (and also The Pacific, less epic but still good)

Band of Brothers was excellent but I liked the book better, I enjoyed The Pacific more then BoB to be perfectly honest, but I'm biased, I'm a Marine and the grandson of a Pacific Marine, so it's family history + unit history/pride. I grew up hearing those stories and reading books on the Pacific. So yeah, serious bias. Also just in general "Honor" (The Pacific's theme) beats the hell out of the instrumental version of "Requiem for a Soldier" (Band of Brothers theme) however, the latter when sung with the full lyrics is hauntingly gorgeous, especially as sung by Katherine Jenkins.

Just watched Storage 24. Not a bad film, but definitely glad I didn't buy it a few weeks ago.
Basically, a bunch of Londoners get trapped in a storage locker centre after a plane crash. And of course, there's something in there with them. And it's hungry...or homicidal...they don't really explain. But highlights include Noel Clarke sticking firework rockets on one of those yapping toy dogs and someone getting threatened with an electric toothbrush.
Watch it on tv or netflix or something, but its definitely not really worth buying.

That would be a continuity mistake.

 About the frog DNA:
It could be theoretically possible, but
Quote
"..extremely difficult... One would need to know which frog genes are homologous with which dinosaur genes, which would likely require a huge amount of dinosaur DNA fragments and sequencing data."

 Also:

Quote
"In the book, they actually used a mix of DNA sources - only a handful of the species had the frog DNA specifically (including the compys and velociraptors)..."

If you were gonna do it you would use bird (probably ostrich or raptor(bird)) or reptile (probably crocodile or iguana) genes. Using an amphibian is just silly.

I'm not gonna argue about the scientific inaccuracies of a science fiction movie  :psyduck: .

I was once part of a big Facebook argument about Looper and the guy was saying he couldn't enjoy it because of its time travel and its paradoxes. To which a lot of people replied, "It's not a paradox, also you're missing the entire rest of the film."
I jokingly said he must've hated Back To The Future and then he genuinely said he did because it's time travel elements were so wrong.  :psyduck:

Watched 21 And Over. Basically like a less mean spirited, smaller budget and less funny Hangover. But I liked it a lot more because it's not hateful.

I decided to try and watch The Hangover the other night and turned it off after about 15 minutes because there were just so damn many cliches. Decided to watch The Orphanage instead and I'm not upset about that choice.

Also, the trailer for The World's End got released. This is the last movie in the Blood and Ice Cream trilogy that includes Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. I'm pretty excited.

The one caveat I would maintain about Jurassic Park is that it was made 20 years ago; much of what was thought at the time has been proven incorrect since; theories and thoughts have been reviewed, revised and rewritten. Even more so in the novel, which was published in late 1990. Its different to the old "Lost World" type of films where the films makers used gila monsters and iguanas with cardboard fins as dinosaurs, the production team and their experts took what they knew, among them Bob Bakker and Jack Horner. Even they have admitted that some of their theories were incorrect since their work on the film.
Here's the thing, Jurassic Park was never meant to be a film about dinosaurs, but rather a cautionary tale about blindly jumping into a scientific field that few people had truly explored, with no regard for the consequences, much like the majority of Michael Cricthon's work. There were no dinosaurs in that film, they're extinct, the have been for millions of years, what they had were mutants that resembled dinosaurs. Take the cue from that, that these people are on an island to observe an experiment that went horrible awry.

I thought Looper worked because there wasn't all this "hey, this is how time travel works" techno-babble. Also, you can't really go into a SF film and bring in rules of other SF cannon. Doesn't work. It's like trying to tie Azimoff's rules to Transformers, Droids from Star Wars or anything hostile from Star Trek.

Also, I loved that Bruce Willis's explantion of time travel was basically: "Go fuck yourself".

Also, Iron Man 3 seems to have finally broken the "flawed ending" curse that most recent trilogies have suffered from (ending as in, the film ends the trilogy. I'm thinking Spiderman 3, etc). Granted this doesn't really work when #2 was pretty terrible.

Also, in other Avengers news, there are some Guardians of the Galaxy concept art stills floating around and apparently Ant Man will begin casting towards the end of the year. Apparently we're already in "Phase 2" of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the release of Iron Man 3, followed up with Thor 2, Cpt. America 2, Guardians of the Galaxy and the Avengers 2. Then Ant Man kicks of Phase 3. Kind of weirdly excited.

Saw three movies this weekend:

The Big Wedding - romantic comedy. I'm a sucker for a good romantic comedy. This is a good romantic comedy.
Oblivion - not a romantic comedy. Intelligently designed Si-Fi.
Jack Reacher - pure shyte.

Seriously? Better than the first one? I mean I like that Dr Malcom is the main protagonist but seriously, dinosaurs in the US? Got a bit too Godzilla-esque for my liking.

I did see Oblivion a couple of weeks ago - thought it looked very similar to what Mass Effect would look like as a movie. Various camera shots, ship/planet/gun design, etc. Morgan Freeman was wasted in his role though.

Get it on Blu-Ray if you're going to spend some dolla, it's visually pretty amazing.

Going to the cinema is a weird experience. It seems like there is a large problem with modern cinema, in that ticket prices are over-priced and the movies you're going to see are not worth a £10 ticket. In an age where you can buy the DVD for about £5 if you wait about 6 months after the thematic release, or torrent the thing for free, or rent from Apple Store/Google Play, or from various streaming services, it seems that the lure of the silver screen is decreasing for many.

I believe some of modern cinema is ingenious in its marketing - I'm developing an interest in that side of the film-making process - such as The Avengers and Marvel's original 5-year-plan to culminate several films into what could've been an awful crossover throwaway thing. Only recently however did I realise that of the Avengers films, I only saw The Avengers and Iron Man 3 in the cinema. Why? Because my cynicism became less and less of a controlling influence over that time when I realised, after watching the films I'd missed in the comfort of my own home, that 2/3 were good (nobody is lamenting Ed Norton's absence from Avengers) and word of mouth about how good [film x] is is enough to gouge my wallet open - no wonder as a series it has made billions. Is the lesson that if you pump out enough mediocrity you'll eventually hit gold?

There is also the double-edged sword of retaining franchise rights. Suddenly you're not going to see a film any more, you're experiencing a franchise. I believe the Star Wars prequels were made partially out of Lucas's love for the story - is it a coincidence that it sold a huge amount of toys? The next three seem to be an Avengers style marketing ploy (in no small part to the success of Pixar and Marvel Studios). The latest Oz film reminds us that any kind of trickery can get a prequel made if you dodge a few licensed references (e.g. the ruby slippers). The latest Fast & Furious entry does one thing to modernise the series - set most of it in London (but it still plays on the audience's nostalgia for the first two instalments). Prequels are now big-budget mystery-ruining disappointments that add nothing to the legacy they attempt to revive. Any decent novels or stories that gain attention appear to immediately coagulate with the highest bidder to form cold, hard cash. If they're feeling particularly lazy, a studio will green light a popular movie from 20-30 years ago that will be remade and retain none of the original magic or any semblance of interesting cast. A lot of the magic of 'cult classics' and films from the 70s and 80s tends to stem from directors who had a crazy, zany vision and maybe one guy at a big studio would have enough leeway to make sure the thing got produced. Nowadays studios seem to take way fewer risks, ultimately culminating in a bland experience for the consumer.

Essentially my point is that the multiplex should be lowering audience expectation - but when the price increases, we think we should be getting what we pay for. The experience of seeing a film in the cinema is suffering from a lack of originality, the on-going battle between studios to obtain the rights to money-making franchises and waking up to find ourselves swamped in movies that are just clones of each other.

tl;dr - multiplexes are kind of crap, support your local independent cinema and delve into some arthouse films or something

The experience of a movie is something too, though. Going to a large building, where things are dark and there is an air of mystique and there are hushed tones and things draped in red drapes and stuff ... the lowering of the lights, hushed silence and stuff ... wonderful.

Plus, my favourite cinema has large 'love seats' for me and the lady upstairs which are so comfortable. And the upstairs has basically a private bar with several scotches and some cognacs for sale.

Oh definitely, and that's what keeps me and others coming back - you can't really replicate the experience of the multiplex at home. The space, the seats, the screen size, the surround sound. I love that about cinemas. The industry surrounding it however is another matter.

The love-seats thing sounds pretty cool!  I've seen some things online about having what are essentially sofas instead of single chairs and it seems like an interesting and comfy idea.

I've never been to a theater like that. Sounds neat though.

When I go the cinemas I don't feel any "mistique" or anything. I just go because the massive 21:9 movie screen and the 3D audio makes it so immersive, it's a completely different experience. Case in point, when I went to see the hobbit at the cinema it was amazing. When I saw it on DVD it was.....  nowhere as good as I remembered.

Of course my asshole of a mother refusing to let blurays/HDMI cables into the house probably plays a large part in that, but w/e..... >_>
