So the lass and I went to 22 Jump Street last night, which was fantastic - almost as good as the first one, but a hair under its quality level.

I also recently rewatched 40 Year Old Virgin - I always forget just how funny that movie is and just how terrible its ending is.

I watched the Wedding Singer (I've only ever seen the first 45 minutes - four times. Long story as to why) which is a very, very good film on a number of levels and that surprised me no end because, you know, Adam Sandler was involved.

It's no Punch Drunk Love. I haven't seen 40YOV since theaters, what's wrong with the ending? Spoiler tags obviously.

It's not a plot issue. The ending is fine. Everyone learns the right lessons, the plot is resolved.

And then there's a musical number. A semi-funny one, but by far the least funny part of the movie and seemingly beamed in from an entirely other film. It's just out of place, and screams of 'oh, our plot resolving correctly isn't interesting enough for an ending.'

Also, that film is too long. This fucking film is two hours long. I remember seeing it at the cinema and thinking it could stand to lose 20 minutes, and the DVD edition is EVEN LONGER.

Every DVD nowadays comes as the uncut director's version, especially comedies (but ESPECIALLY Judd Apatow comedies) and it's just like, can I not just buy the theatrical cut thanks?

I shall never forget nor forgive the numbskulls who took the 21 Jump Street series from when I was young and tured it into a supposedly hilarious, but really, intensely juvenile and stupd and vapid comedy.

It had Johnny Depp, man. Before he was, like JOHNNY DEPP.

You hurt me, bro. You cut me deep.

Also you would hate the second one even more, because my girlfriend and I were pretty much the only people in a packed cinema who understood maybe 75% of the jokes. Every time someone got physically hurt the laughs were huge, but anything requiring a moment's thought or attention just died completely except for us two.

I finally got around to watching Léon: The Professional a couple of days ago, and I can't believe that I didn't watch this sooner. Absolutely amazing. Gary Oldman is phenomenal in this film, and so was Natalie Portman, who didn't have any acting experience prior to this film.

I just watched Sugar Hill (the 1974 one) and I really liked it. Basic revenge horror blaxploitation movie involving zombies. Don Pedro Colley is amazingly campy in it and every time he was on screen I kept thinking they based Doctor Facilier on him. The ending was kind of surprising to me because

I saw Magicians, starring Mitchell and Webb, last night on Netflix.

Here's what I wrote on Amazon:
'I've not written an Amazon review for months, but I watched this on Netflix last night and it is unbelievably bad.

It's not even that it's offensively bad. It's a 90-minute bucket of magnolia paint that barely registers. But when you consider the talent involved that is preposterous.

Let's take a brief look at just how many insanely talented comic actors are in this film. Obviously Mitchell and Webb are the stars, but we also have Peter Capaldi, Jessica Hynes, Darren Boyd, Steve Edge, Miranda Hart and basically every single other British comedy actor that ever appeared in Peep Show, The Thick Of It or any other British comedy around 2007.

Then consider that I didn't laugh for pretty much the first forty-five minutes, and maybe only three or four times after that. Capaldi gets a couple of laughs as the shady magic promoter, Boyd is amusing as a closeted agent. Reading the Wiki on this film after watching it I found out that it's actually written by the same people as Peep Show, and is the same rating (15), and yet is absolutely lacking in the brilliantly dark, awkward humour of that programme.

The staging and direction is bland, the whole thing looks cheap, everyone is working far too hard for the laughs which just don't come.

This is awful, but not even awful enough that you remember it. I'm amazed I remembered it 12 hours later to write this review.'

I was going to ask what you were expecting from a Robocop remake, but then I remembered that the Dredd remake was really fucking good, so I guess it had a chance to not be terrible

I enjoyed the Robocop remake when I saw it but now that I think about it, I barely remember a thing from it. Although that's true for most films I've seen in the cinema whether I liked them or not.

Okay so thoughts on T' W o' WS.

It's good. It's very good. It's a pretty great four out of five.

It's got a couple of the classic Scorsese issues - some weird continuity issues, the fact that it just kind of STARTS and then rolls along for hours without any real peaks and troughs in the story, a couple of subplots that just kinda go missing for like an hour. There is way, way, WAY too much nudity in this film, and precious little of it is really editorially justified either.

Matthew McConahairlinereceding is great, but was only in it for like fifteen minutes, which kinda sucks. Jonah Hill is fantastic. Leo is amazing. Basically everyone in the film gives a performance that if not career best is getting there, including a lot of people who I never expected to be in it (Rob Reiner??? Wosthername from Birds of a Feather whose name I've already forgotten) and some who will never get near a film of this calibre ever again (the dude from My Name Is Earl).

Oh, also, despite being a 'black comedy' it forgets to be funny for at least the final hour.

But yeah Leo is an incredible actor, but I've never seen him as much of a risk taker. In this, though, he's swearing like a sailor, doing shitloads of drugs, getting candlewax dropped on his naked ass - I was impressed.

I disagree with the first part, but can't dispute the second. Also Matthew McConoughey's bit is probably my favorite part of the film. (Hums and beats chest)

I just saw Boyhood - probably the most original and forcefull description of time in a temporal medium I've ever seen.
Some of the experiences of the kids took me back to me and my sister growing up, stuff I hadn't thought about in years - and it's really a "wow" moment when you see Ellar Coltrane packing for college and passing his own childhood photograph.
