I just watched The Wolverine. It's better than Wolverine: Origins, but that's not saying much

I'll never forgive Origins for ruining any chance of having my two favourite Marvel characters ever reappearing in the film universe. Goddamn it, and I had such high hopes for Deadpool and Gambit.

I saw I Love You, Man the other day with my girlfriend. One of my favourite films, and it's genuinely a quiet sort of brilliant. The storyline is basically nothing - a man puts his impending marriage at risk with a new bromance - but the performances by Jason Segel (who's about as funny as cancer on How I Met Your Mother, but in films is seemingly really quite brilliant) and especially Paul Rudd (I have never seen someone do awkwardness so absolutely perfectly while still being funny). It's just a really funny film, doesn't have much story, but it's just... really funny throughout and I don't know what more you can ask from a comedy.

Oculus. Very tense, creates a really good sense of, "Is this real or not?" without getting confusing. Also some of the transitions gave me happy film maker feelings. I think if I could be sexually attracted to a film, I would be attracted to this one. More in a "I have connected with this film" way than, "OMG SO PRETTY".

I love you, Gareth.

Because I basically share your sentiments for this film. Plus there was a point at university where I realised I didn't have any close man friends so had to go out into the world and be all awkward about asking men out on man-dates, like Rudd does.

Plus who doesn't love Rush? The ultimate man band.

Enjoy:

In a world of internet pornography I really feel like those films are pointless to remake.

They're like 75% pointless (but extremely mild) titillation with about 25% shit jokes. Or at least the remakes certainly were. Especially since the moral of the story seemed to be 'dress like a porn star and you will become popular.'

I rewatched Little Miss Sunshine last night. I had forgotten how top-to-bottom fantastic it is. Steve Carell's performance is so amazingly understated that whenever his character says something funny I was surprised that he was capable of humour - despite being played by a comedian. It's truly remarkable, it really is. Everyone in that film does an amazing job.

Still, I thought there was potential in a movie about a completely anti-social girl school. It just didn't deliver completely. But the Colin Firth jokes were okay.

I don't for a second believe that a single person involved in the making of those movies gave a shit about the plot.

That is one of my favorite movies of all time. It's fabulous. One of my favorite quotes comes from it, too. So simple but great advice- "Do what you love and fuck the rest."

(Oh yeah, considering the thread title, last night we watched 47 Ronin. It was pretty good!)

To stay on topic: Watched Godzilla (2014) and I was pretty impressed.  There were some surprises, and for the most part, they were pleasant.

Wasn't sure where to post this, figured it would be better received here.

So there's this guy at work who kind of down plays my taste in movies and TV shows in front of everyone (even though I have haven't made many recommendations) and he's suggesting seeing transformers 4 (he loved it) and says that me liking how to train your dragon 2 better than any movie this year is stupid.  Totally throwing it out as a kids movie and hasn't seen it yet.

So Transformers for: 16%  made $100M in opening week
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/transformers_age_of_extinction/
Now admittedly I haven't seen it yet as it is largely being panned by critics that have similar movie tastes as me but will get to it when it comes out on redbox.  But most reviewers pretty much said it was a garbage movie.

HTTYD2: 92% made $13M in opening week
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/how_to_train_your_dragon_2/
Visual stunning, greatly written story, interesting characters, and great cinematography. Yeah not chance he'll see it.... "I'll ask my nephew" implying that its only for kids.

Shoot I'll at least try to watch T4 but don't want to waste my money watching it in theaters if its as bad as other people have said.

TL;DR:
How to train your dragon > Transformers 4.  But nobody cares.  :-P

I'm not sure those kind of people deal with logic (or at least, sound reasoning), but you could ask him who is favourite Transformers character is. If he says a transformer's name, you can just nod, turn around, and walk away at that point.

Edit: No, they don't deal with logic. Thanks to Blue Kitty for this: ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’ Writer Ehren Kruger: “Logical Sense Doesn’t Have to Be the Be-All, End-All”

Spur of the moment purchase of Safety Not Guaranteed yesterday. The plot is, perhaps, a little predictable as American Rom-Coms go but the characterisation and storytelling makes for very compelling watching. It also stars Mark Duplass who, for me, can do no wrong.

He's made a few decent things since, but undoubtedly everything since Wedding Crashers has been a waste. (WC is great though)

I recently rewatched Independence Day.  For all the dumb crap in that movie, the thing that always bothers me is when the B-2 fires a nuclear missile at the alien ship.  We see the B-2 veer off to the left after firing, but in the next shot we're watching the encounter on radar and the radar shows the B-2 went to the right.

That's the one thing I can't suspend disbelief over.

Just watched 'Moon' which gave me a higher level of respect for Sam Rockwell.  I already thought he was a good actor, but wow.  Then followed that up with 'The Machine' which surprised me.  I wasn't expecting much from that one, but there was some real substance there.  Actually enjoyed it quite a bit.

I just watched Big Trouble in Little China and I'm completely confused. I don't remember anyone explaining much of anything, and everyone, except Jack, just takes it in stride like nothing is wrong.

I remember watching that when I was a teenager, and thinking that everyone was just very nonchalant about some incredible shit happening all around them.  Like this just happens every Tuesday or something.

Watched the Full Monty last night. Never seen it before. Very funny, very sweet, very real. I feel like films like it don't really get made any more, or TV shows for that matter.

Its a movie I'll always watch if it's on. Just because it's a few pathetic men trying to do the best with what they have. If a similar film was made nowadays, it would certainly paint a different picture of those on the dole/JSAers. Also, men with body issues! Not something you see a lot in film.

I'm intrigued in your thoughts on the movie, please do tell.

I will do this! Once I've actually put some thoughts down in readable sentences. I loved Jack Nicholson but I did read the book first...perhaps a lifetime of people saying it was a brilliant film (+ one of the greatest examples of Kubrick's method) let me down?

Also saw a few firsts recently: The Secretary, Pacific Rim. Both good. Going to start the Dollars Trilogy tonight.

Exactly, like that thing came out of the hole, grabbed some guy, and then Victor Wong threw something at it and said, "It won't do that again," without explaining what it was at all. And then they never mention it again.

I just watched Bounty Killers, and it was a stupid/fun action movie. Next to no plot but it was a lot of fun
