I watched "A Cabin in the Woods" a few days ago. Maybe reading so many SCPs has spoiled me, but I didn't really like it.

This thread I think

________________________________
So I have been hearing that Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is spectacular.  But I didn't see the first one (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) so me and my girlfriend watched it last night.  Now my girlfriend is a scientist and works in labs and she just kept calling bullshit on how the lab in the movie was set up and how many protocols and laws were being violated, which was quite insightful.  But it had to happen to heighten the drama and show how corporate this lab was.  This movie was quite tragic until act 3.  You really feel for the apes and are rooting for them.  The writers and actors did a spectacular job IMHO.  I was surprised to see Brian Cox and John Lithgow as I don't recall seeing them in the trailers.  Also if you are familiar with the old saga from back in the day there are tons of call backs, references, set ups, and hell at one point one of the characters was watching it on is tv!

My roommate skipped out on watching it 'case he has seen it before and didn't think it was that good.  Me and my girlfriend on the other hand thought it was a pretty great movie and is totally worth seeing.  We'll probably wait for a week or two and wait for the crowds to die down at the theater before seeing the sequel.

Literally just finished watching Need for Speed.  When this movie came out, it got a shit ton of criticism, including one guy that I guess got up and walked out half an our into the movie.

I'm not sure what they were expecting.  As a movie reviewer, did you see the title and think that it should be an oscar nominated movie?  Were your expectations higher than when you went to see Watchmen that time, and it wasn't what you thought it would be?  I'm just not sure I understand the mentality that would see 'Need for Speed' and not expect a racing game turned into a movie.  Because that is literally what you get.  There are obviously races, and there are cops chasing racers, and wholly predictable plot twists, and above all there are a shitload of really expensive cars on display that are then wrecked and crashed and jumped in spectacular ways - just like the game.

Need for Speed will never be in contention for an Oscar (unless it's for the fact that they actually really destroyed cars, instead of taking the CG route) but it is exactly what I expected a movie about video game racing to be.  And Aaron Paul actually did a very good job as the lead, so there's that.  To be honest, I love that Michael Keaton is not afraid of taking the roles he does these days, because I really like him in damn near everything he does, even when he voiced the 'mean guy' in Cars.  He's good for this movie in what he does, and makes the eccentricities of the character believable for me.

Need for Speed is not a great movie, and to some it's not even a good movie.  For me, it was exactly what I expected, and I liked watching it for 2 hours.  I honestly cannot say the same for some of the movies that come out and are supposed to be fucking brilliant.  Last time I checked, it's supposed to be entertaining?  Right?  Well, I was entertained for whatever that's worth.

Just my 2¢

I watched White House Down last night.

Typical Emmerich, shit blows up and is seen through the eyes of everyday Americans like you and me and Roland (at most one of those is actually American).

It is entertaining, terrible shit and I enjoyed every second of it. It's appalling but so much fun. And the cast was a who's who of 'that guy from'. It had a guy from Step Brothers/Cabin In The Woods, James Woods, the blonde McPoyle from It's Always Sunny, the security guard from Devil, Daniels from The Wire, Maggie Gylenhaal and God knows who else.

And Channing Tatum.

It's fun as shit, though.

This almost perfectly described my reaction as well.  I was not expecting that.  Not that it was bad for that, just...   yeah, unexpected.

I saw it with some friends I ran into after another friend was a no show. The whole time I was thinking, "Wait, is this trying to be Diehard?"

Just watched Dredd.  I thought it was quite good. Lots of slow then fast moments.  The juxtaposition really works.  Shame there wont be a sequel.

Karl Urban did an excellent job as Dredd though I have not read the comics he is based on.  My only real exposure to Judge Dredd is this guy:

I was not a huge Dredd reader but read a few when I was younger.  From what I remember, he nailed it.

I thought the big news shortly after it came out was that no sequel will be made due to doing bad at the box office.  granted I would have seen it in the movie theaters if they were showing it in my area.  I think it had a limited release.  :-\

There's been a lot of rumors that they're making one, mainly cause the first cost so little to make and has already achieved cult status

I just watched Snowpiercer and I really liked it. I haven't seen anything that bloody in awhile. Unfortunately my girlfriend already read up on it so she knew everything that was coming.

No, she didn't tell me. She still remembers the last time she spoiled a movie for me and I punched her in the arm. She didn't know what the movie was about so she looked it up, but if she was anyone else she would have stopped reading after a general summary.

In the past few days, I have shown my girlfriend four of my favourite films - Swingers (a new favourite), Good Will Hunting, Sideways and American Beauty.

I realised that what attracts me to these films so much isn't just the performances (and I think Robin Williams' performance in Good Will Hunting might be the finest acting performance I've ever seen) but the fact that the central character of each one is, in some way, a loser.

I can't even remember the name of Jon Favreau's character in Swingers, but he's a lonely, desperate loser who can't get over a relationship that ended six months earlier, and ends up constantly sabotaging himself.

Will Hunting is an orphan and abuse victim with intelligence beyond any that had been seen in living memory, but that he'd never been able to put to use - and it left him stalled in a life that in some ways, seems pathetic, but is so comforting to him that he feels like he can't escape it, or won't.

Miles in Sideways is a divorced, depressive, failed author who uses being a wine connoisseur as an excuse for being an alcoholic.

And Lester in American Beauty is stuck in a loveless, cold marriage with a woman he barely recognises any more, and ends up trapped in a sequence of fantasies about a girl young enough to be his daughter.

Each one of them, in his own way, a loser. And I always side with the loser. I always want to know their story. I see parts of myself in all of them (Jon Favreau in obsessing about the past, Will in his refusal to exit his comfort zone, Miles just GENERALLY, Lester in the way he uses his pathetic self esteem to make jokes like 'it's okay, I wouldn't remember me either'; a funny joke but one that's cruelly accurate to his own feelings).

These are the films that have shaped and are still shaping my life, from the attitudes of the characters, the lessons they learn. These films are pieces of art, they move me, and sharing them with someone has made them all the more special to me simply because she understands that and understands them and understands me.

I love this girl.

Interesting to read the point of view, as I found American Beauty to be one of the worst movies I'd ever seen.  Different strokes...

ev4n this is not a direct criticism of you, but I really hate when people do that.

'I really hated that movie!' ...*leaves thread without explanation*

Obviously everyone's allowed a different opinion, hate whatever movies you like, but at least tell us what you didn't like about it.

Sure, I can do that.  I have no interest in telling anyone they are wrong for loving that movie, or in debating whether the movie worked for you or me.  But I can give me two cents.

American Beauty struck me as a movie that was trying to be clever and deep, in telling us how middle aged people can be disillusioned and disaffected.  The problem, for me, is that I pretty much felt that rather than this being a deep or insightful revelation, it was something that everybody already damned well knows.

Plus, the "plot twist" or advancement that used a horrible cliché about homosexuality did not impress me at all.

In the end, my personal gut feel of the movie was that it had nothing interesting or novel to tell me.  Again, ymmv.

I don't think it was trying to tell us that at all, just observing that it happened. Lester may be feeling alive again, finally, but he's also being a total asshole to almost everyone around him, even if many of them deserve it.

For me the insight the film was trying to impart was that there is beauty everywhere in life if you actually look for it instead of just kind of vegging out and never appreciating anything, which I think is what the majority of the adults in the film do.

That may have been a cliche about homosexuality, but was it a cliche in 1999? I genuinely am not aware.

Yeah that's more or less my point. I don't think it was so hackneyed fifteen years ago as it is now.

It's definitely cool to read people's different takeaways from the movie.

I think I saw American Beauty 10 years ago.  I'm also probably a bit older than both of you, so maybe that influenced my feelings of cliché.

Yeah, that's about when I saw it. Maybe a little more than ten, I think I saw it around 2002 or so, so I would've been 15 I guess?

I just watched the Darjeeling Limited and I didn't like it as much as I did other Wes Anderson movies.

I was so bored with American Beauty. So, so bored. The girl was kinda hot, though. Other than that it had less substance than a Transformers cartoon.
