Laziness, and stupidness. Don't know how to turn the shutter sound off? Meh, its probably somewhere but I'm too busy starting at my pretty iOS interface to care.

MoM i'm totally with you on this though. It's a bit like how everyone used to have a bit of a song as their ringtone, now everyone's gone for either that acoustic Nokia thing or just an old-timey ring. Thankfully don't have to listen to poor quality Lil' Jon ringtones anymore.

Plus Amy Adams as Lois Lane actually annoyed me for some reason, but its probably more to do with the film itself rather than her acting abilities.

I watched The Amazing Spider-Man 2 the other day. My god, what an awful piece of shit. How can anyone write so bad dialogue? And what a mess of a plot.. It didn't even look good.

Yes, but why? Why would anyone not turn it off?

Because they don't want to? It's a cue the photo has been taken, for the photographer and the people being photographed, other than flash which isn't always on, and while the device freezes for a second while rendering the photo?

Sorry, I meant anyone who doesn't want to be discovered taking a photo, like apparently happened in the movie. I mean, I get why for plot reasons, but shouldn't she know better?

I thought they made that sound so people know you're taking their picture, compared to older models with people complaining about things like up skirt shots

Yeah, but the sound is easily disabled, so anyone who'd do that would probably disable it. I think it's because people expect to hear that sound and probably don't realize it's not the actual sound of the phone taking the picture.

So I just went to see Patema Inverted, excellent movie, easily on par with some of my favorite anime movies like The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Voices of a Distant Star, fun characters, engaging story and sound track, all wrapped around some excellent plot twists. I even got to see it in a theater! One of the local art houses shows new anime films from time to time.

I just watched the Amazing Mr. Fox. There's not much of a story, but I did enjoy the stop motion animation and the voice cast.

Fantastic Mr. Fox?

Never saw the movie, although the book by Roald Dahl is ingrained in my memory. Even had the audiobook on cassette!

So while in Amsterdam, we watched a lot of movies because the room had a DVD player and a somewhat hilariously eclectic selection of what I'm pretty sure were pirated DVDs. Some of them one or other of us had already seen, some of them neither of us had.

Orphan: This movie is fucked up, I'll spoiler in case you want to see it.
(click to show/hide)

Everybody's Fine: This film is dark as shit. I thought it was like a black comedy or something but it's one of the most depressing movies I've ever seen, even if the ending was telegraphed from a mile off. Brilliant performances by everyone involved, mind. And the DVD cover practically spoils the ending on its own.

17 Again: Genuinely can't believe how good this film is. I mean don't get me wrong, it rips off Big, Back To The Future and 13 Going On 30 on about 40 different levels each and it is far from a classic, but it's surprisingly effective and I don't hate Zac Efron in it at all. Thomas Lennon basically carries the movie, too. He is hilarious throughout.

Paranormal Activity: The first time I saw this it scared the shit out of me, but this has absolutely no rewatch value. You start to pick holes in it and when you decide that when she is talking about 'this thing' she is referring to her vagina, it becomes a vastly improved film.

I Love You Phillip Morris: We watched this in French subtitles because the remote was broken. While I was tripping balls. I remember basically nothing, but I have this on DVD because it's one of my favourite films ever.

Funny People: This film was a revelation. It is at least half an hour too long, don't get me wrong, but it is a remarkable film. Hilarious and full of pathos and with the best work I have ever seen from Adam Sandler (not that that's really saying much). Sandler plays the star but also basically the villain of his own movie, Seth Rogen is hilarious, Jonah Hill is good, Jason Schwartzman is perfect; and there's a cavalcade of cameos that I'm not going to spoil but are one of the highlights of the movie. One exchange between two celebrities (one a rapper, one a comedian) is such a bizarre match up that it might be my favourite cameo of all time.

Deliver Us From Evil. If you take the "Based on true accounts" with a grain of salt it's enjoyable. Got a bit of action and humour in it and it works really well along with the horror which is cool.

I can't remember if I posted this or not already but here we are anyway.

The lass and I have been on a Jackass binge lately. Like we're watching all of it.

I had a realisation though - unless I've not been paying enough attention, I've never noticed anyone in the cast being homophobic, racist or basically prejudiced at all, and I think that for something that largely appeals to the fratboy crowd, that's pretty valuable - showing that you can have a group of men indulging in stupid antics while having a real kinship among them (we watched a documentary about Steve-O's drug problems and it was an intervention from the Jackass guys that finally helped him get clean) but without the need for the usual dumbass prejudices that come with that.

These guys are naked around each other all the time, and they'll occasionally note something being gay (there's one where they fire a dildo with a rocket launcher and lube it up first), but that doesn't stop them doing it, none of them is ever offended by that being said and it's not really at the expense of anybody. They also hang out with people with disabilities (and I don't mean dwarfism being a disability, I mean Johnny Knoxville's co-stars from The Ringer who have actual disabilities) and of different races too without it ever being an issue at all.

I also love the real friendship among the guys... except for Ehren hahaha.

Y'know...I never noticed that but it's so true. That's pretty cool.  :-)

Nick and I finally watched Anchorman 2. I laughed and didn't feel as though my 119 minutes was wasted. I'd watch it again but I wouldn't bother owning it. However- I actually had to pause during the green screen scene. I was honestly laughing so hard that I couldn't breathe!

I felt like Anchorman 2 was a one-hour TV special trying to get out. I felt like it was patience stretching at that length. But honestly the cameos at the end are worth the entire movie.

Yeah, they were great! I definitely wouldn't call it a high quality film but I can generally break my movie opinions down to 4 categories-

1. Need to own.
2. Would watch again.
3. Worth my time.
4. I want my "X amount of minutes" back.

It fell squarely in #3. I was glad I watched it but would probably not watch it in its entirety again, instead opting to search for the good clips on YouTube.

On every smartphone I've had it's been on by default. I assumed she was too shortsighted to turn it off.
Since this whole discussion I have a new phone and there's no option to turn the shutter sound off. Bizarre. There's probably a way to do it but I haven't figured it out yet.

That, I believe, is because of upskirt shots being so prevalent in Japan and most phones being made over there.

It's obnoxious though, since most of the pictures I take are of sleeping animals and I don't wanna wake them :/

(Also the shutter doesn't make a sound if the phone is on silent, so why not just have an option to just turn the camera sound off?)

Also I'd think "someone's hand is holding something down there" would be more of a giveaway than a shutter sound if someone was actually to do that.

Ahh. Well earlier today Sarah and I were hanging and I silenced my phone so I could take a picture of her since she'd dozed off on my shoulder. (I showed her when she woke up so it wasn't a secret, I just didn't want the noise to wake her). So yeah, remembering to put my phone on vibrate/silent is easy enough of a fix, I guess.

Also I'd think "someone's hand is holding something down there" would be more of a giveaway than a shutter sound if someone was actually to do that.
Granted, this was before camera phones were all over the place, but before my Leica M6 was stolen, the rubberised cloth shutter made almost no noise, and since it wasn't a big camera it was mostly ignored, as in "may I take your picture", and when I got a positive reply, people simply forgot the thing was there.  If I was a total fuck-head, I could have gotten plenty of naughty shots with that thing.

I just saw Age of Extinction, and I'm seriously wondering if Bay is intentionally trying to make a horrible movie. I mean, the dialogue and character arcs are sooo bad, the acting from anyone but Wahlberg and Tucci is flat as fuck, the human-made transformers look like 3D screen savers, the sound mixing is horrible and the plot is so messy and incoherent I mostly had no idea what exactly was going on.

It's not like I expected it to be good, I just.. I struggle to fathom how they can make a movie this bad. Is it Bay's idea of a joke?

Probably. Pain and Gain proved that he can make a good movie if he wants to, so if he knows people are going to see it anyway, why not make it as terrible as possible? Although wait, was it really worse than the second one? (I haven't seen the third or fourth)

The second one always had the redeeming quality of a couple really cool action scenes, and the design of the transformers was a lot better. About half of the transformers in the fourth one have this really uncanny design where their face is basically a human's face, but metal. I'm not sure, but I don't think the previous films had this horrible sound design. Like, for example, whenever the Transformers spoke, it sounded like they just recorded the voice and put it directly on, sounding like someone's narrating rather than actually being in the scene. The general sound image made no sense. I seriously think I read somewhere that Skrillex worked on the sound design (and not just music).

At least Marky-Mark is a lot better a lead than LaBeouf..

I just watched the Boxtrolls, and while I didn't think it was as good as Paranorman I still really liked it.

All I know about that movie is it has Bran Stark in it, but I've heard good things about Paranorman so I'll check it out.

You should definitely watch Paranorman, especially since it's on Netflix

I just watched Riddick and it was pretty bad. It tried so hard to be Pitch Black.

I thought the first act of Riddick was pretty cool, though it did go downhill as soon as the mercs arrived.. Bautista was pretty good tho, gave me hopes for Guardians of the Galaxy!

Saw Sin City 2 last night. It was ok, I guess.

I just saw Gone Girl. The movie is so good at telling its story that I now feel physically ill. I threw up on the metro ride back home. I'm currently lying in my bed, shivering and unable to process what I just watched. It's not as if I saw brutal physical violence and am nauseated by it - The emotional violence I just watched is mind-hurting.

Great performances by all in the cast, although I suspect Neil Patrick Harris is only able to play weird people. Ben Affleck was great, Rosamund Pike intoxicating, Carrie Coon so relatable.

If you seriously want to watch this movie, don't spoiler yourself. The spoiler I've written doesn't reveal any plot and is actually a joke.

I simply can not fathom why anyone made a movie of Gone Girl.  The book was riveting, but ultimately, not enjoyable or good.
