I prefer rectal cancer over Hangover 2.

The Hangover 2, a movie so bad that I'm glad I completely forgot the plot. I think it may be a repressed memory

is it worth tracking down Akira?  I have not seen it but I have heard of good things about it, even though I did happen to find out some spoilers accidentally through imgur.

It is.  For how influential and ahead of its time it was if nothing else.  I also found it a totally enjoyable film as well, and even went out and bought the soundtrack.

I watched Paranormal Activity 4, which (having not seen The Marked Ones) is by far the worst of this franchise I've seen. The first one I thought was great but gets worse every time I see it, 2 was entertaining even if it was largely the same bag of tricks, 3 was scary but pissed me off...

What baffled me most was that 4 was apparently the 'unrated' cut, when I think the only blood I saw in it was a clip from the end of the first movie and the deaths at the end were totally bloodless. Also, setting what must be a record for this franchise, absolutely nothing happens until the LAST FIFTEEN MINUTES.

As a pathetic side note, the girl playing Katie has lost a ton of weight, which I find sad - firstly because I found her much more attractive when she was heavier, but also because seemingly to work as an 'actress' now, she has probably had to have lost weight in order to be considered for any parts.

I thought the second was too self-referential, and stopped watching the rest.

I also get triggered heavily by blood and gore, so the movies weren't a very enjoyable experience for me to begin with.

The Marked Ones was decent if memory serves. Benefits from having a new setting.

Finally saw Interstellar. Was so good, emotions are a little fried.

I only saw the first one, where absolutely nothing happens until the last fifteen seconds, so you're being more generous with the series than I'd be. Not only was it tremendously boring, the shaky cam made me really nauseous.

As for movies, I saw Nightcrawler today. Excellent performance from Maggie's lil' bro.

Lilo and Stitch. Been years since I watched this and it was much funnier than I remembered. The characters are brilliant and I love the relationship between Lilo and Nani. Lilo always acts like a young child which makes for some of my favourite moments.

I guess I meant she's actually written by someone who seems to know how children act. Too many things where children are just mini-adults or you have a five year old acting like a teenager.

I got them about ten years ago, so I don't know if you could find new ones anywhere. The series was called "Disney's Animated Adventures" and was published by BBC Worldwide and Disney Publishing Worldwide.

You might get some leads from comicvine, but I don't think it will help much.

The address printed in the front of the comics is
BBC Worldwide Ltd, Woodlands, 80 Wood Lane, London W12 OTT.

I saw a few cheesy action movies last week, including one that was for some reason never released in theatres. Stretch starring Patrick Wilson as a limo driver. It was pretty funny, I dug it.

Last night I watched "Safe" with friends. Yes, a Jason Statham film. You know exactly what to expect from JS's movies; JS beats everybody up. Except, at the climax, this film subverted the conventions of its genre, and I laughed out loud. So I guess I enjoyed it.

I just watched the Hobbit, the stretched/bloated nature of the movies was becoming increasingly clear here. We did not need a 15 minute fight scene to kill off that mini boss orc that no-one cared about, neither did we need that disjointed fan service scene with Saruman, Galadriel and Elrond fighting witch kings. Overall it was obviously enjoyable to a point, but it's painfully clear that Peter Jackson just had way too much budget money to spend.

I tried watching Divergent. Got about an hour in. I liked the premise, but then it got all "teenage girl coming of agey" on me. I was told it was like the Hunger Games in a sense, so I guess I should have expected it. I also had a bunch of nitpicky issues, but besides the acting those are all personal issues I think.

I did like the musical score though, that got me through a lot of it.

Picked up Once Upon A Time in Anatolia for cheap in HMV.

A beautifully ponderous and sublime piece of Turkish film-making connecting a series of very human moments on the fringes of a murder investigation. This film is worth your time.

I just watched Part 1 of Mockingjay and it was alright. It's not as great as the other two, which is okay considering it's a bridge movie, but it did have its moments

It was better than I thought, considering it's by far the weakest book.

I saw The Imitation Game today, Cummerbund gave a great performance as expected, but I wasn't expecting Keira Knightley to wow me like that. Also I didn't realize until after but the friend I was with knew nothing about Turing, so I'm glad I wasn't talking about it before because I could've easily accidentally spoiled a big part of it.

I've seen some of that, but I don't see it as relevant to what I like her for, her acting. Looking at performances like Winters Bone, Hunger Games, Silver Linings. She's strong in both portrayal and range. So long as that off-screen stuff doesn't start to bleed into her acting peformances, I'm not going to stop going to see films she's in or stop liking her for her performances.

And really, saving colossal asshattery such as Tom Cruise, why would we ever judge an actor for anything other than their acting?

I'd say because certain actors, or famous people in general, hold a certain amount of influence over people. They have a platform and sometimes bad things happen when they're given a platform. Like Jenny McCarthy.

But I get your point, we shouldn't care, it's just that people do.

But largely that's because people are told that they should be care so that others can monetize the minutia of the lives of the rich and famous. I have to concede that it's an ingenious, if rather insidious industry.

I just watched Kill Your Darlings, and I am conflicted. As a movie, I loved it, especially Radcliffe's portrayal of Allen Ginsberg and Ben Foster's spot-on Willie Burroughs. Where I'm conflicted is with the story it tells because it presents Ginsberg's romanticized version of the murder of David Kammerer as true and downplays that he was a manipulative pedophile. It's a movie based on how Ginsberg and the other beats told the story, rather than being based on the story.

Saw some movies over the break:

47 Ronin:
Admittedly I came in when he was racing for the sword against that turtle monk guy but it was okay.  Visuals were not that bad and the ending made sense.  I wouldn't say its a great movie but its a fair movie if there is nothing to do.  Keanu Reeves seemed like he was suppose to be the star but the story revolved around a different guy trying to bring his Lord's killer to justice.  The whole Romeo/Juliet thing with Neo seemed a bit out of place, especially considering the ending.

Divergent:
Many people want to compare this to the Hunger Games, the cinematography felt like it, but the story seemed to be something different.  It seemed like it was trying to tell 3-4 different types of stories all at once (a Post-apocalyptic society movie, a teen finding her identity drama, a political thriller, and maybe even a forbidden romance movie).  I came in when she was getting her hair cut by her mom so I think I missed the first 5 minutes of the movie where they explain all the different castes of the society, which would have been fun to learn more about.  It seemed like Harry Potter had a baby with The Giver (book, I haven't seen the movie) threw up on Mean Girls.  Now maybe the book is better as they can explain more or perhaps I had a hard time hearing as there were people talking loudly in Macedonian behind me, but it was just an OK movie for me.  There were a lot of glaring plot holes:
(click to show/hide)

I did find it interesting that they were really empowering the Female lead.  She wasn't helpless and the few times she was she just took the hit (literally in most cases) or had a buddy help her.  The romance she had seemed like lust
(click to show/hide)
So like my 47 Ronin review, its not an awesome movie but its not exactly terrible.  Just something to watch if nothing else is on.

The Sentinel:
If you like 24 or other political thrillers involving a presidential assassination and no one knows which Secret Service agent is the mole, this is your movie.  Staring Michael Douglas and Jack Bauer, they try to stop an assassination of the president.  I will say as a local here in Washington D.C. it was fun to see some of the places I recognize in town.  Seemed good for the parts I could hear (lots of Slavic bickering in the kitchen).  If you like those political thriller type movies, you'll like this one.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes: This is a really good movie. Go see the first on with Jimmy Frank-O and then go see this movie.  Its amazing.

Its a very good movie, and quite Shakespearean.  I couldn't help but think of the orcs from warcraft 3 with Caesar being Thrall some of the time.  Just go see these movies.

I just watched The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, and I thought it was alright. It was a nice end to Peter Jackson in Middle Earth, though CGI Bill Connelly was kind of creepy

Also, that aside about Strider seemed really forced

Oh, I saw Into the Woods yesterday. I liked it, great performances...kind of long, though.

The musical is longer. I still hold a bit of trepidation about seeing it (I'm going on Tuesday, I always see movies on Tuesday because the theatre has a student special). Into the Woods is my favorite musical, and it means a lot to me on a personal level, but some of its darkest and most emotional moments were apparently cut.

I'm pretty sure they mentioned in the movie that he was really young (probably just said 18, I dunno, I was only half paying attention to all the cliche'd teenage banter parts). Doesn't make him not look at least 25 in the movie though.

I watched Nick Offerman's special on netflix (the guy who plays Ron Swanson), it was okay. Good go if you like stand-up.

I saw Into the Woods yesterday and actually thought it was very good as an adaptation. There were some really awesome performances, Meryl Streep especially, and beautiful visuals. One thing that really made Les Mis disappointing for me is nothing felt as epic in the film as it did on stage, this movie doesn't have that problem.

I wish they hadn't pared down the role of the Mysterious Man so much, I'm not 100% sold on the new lyrics for On the Steps of the Palace, and I don't know what the hell was going on with Depp's wolf costume.

But overall it was great and I feel like my favorite musical was handled well.
