So, for some reason, my family was watching Catwoman. I can't think of one redeeming quality from the movie, it was as if the director was like, "yeah, tight costume, boobs are out... okay, just fill in the rest with whatever".

There was one scene where the main romance or whatever the heck it was, was playing basketball in front of kids. The kids were doing the "OH, you got served!" kind of chanting, even though the main characters were kinda just standing around kind of being able to dribble, but not really. All I could think was "really? you couldn't have had them doing literally anything else?" But then I realized that was my whole experience watching the film.

I just finished watching "A Million Ways to Die in the West"...

it's so stupid and moronically funny.

I nearly snorted my Coke when Doc Brown showed up....

I think most directors doing superhero movies pre-2008 were only cashing in. No interest or respect at all in the material.

I'd say X-Men in 2000 was the start of comic book movies being done well.

In retrospect, I don't think GL was as bad as much of what came before. Just compare it to, say, Fantastic Four or Catwoman. It's just that people had a lot higher expectations after the Batman movies, Iron Man and several other good superhero movies coming out.

Watching the R rated version of Spawn for the first time, I'm only 40 minutes in but it's really easy to see how the editors chopped the hell out  :clairedoge: of this movie to get it to a PG-13.

Funny story for that movie, when the movie first came out I was only 7 years old. When it came out on video my dad, knowing how much I loved super heroes, decided to rent it for me when we went to see him for the weekend. Unfortunately he got us the cartoon that was playing on HBO around the time the movie came out by accident. A cartoon that ran much longer than the movie and was filled with more gore and sex

It might be showing in the cinema the next town over, if it is I'll try to get to it.

I saw Dumb And Dumber To. It was funny, although some gags got very racist. I know it's meant to be, "Ha, these guys are SO STUPID that they think that was okay to say/do!" but... Eh, I definitely got a little uncomfortable. I enjoyed the callbacks especially because they expanded upon the old jokes, not just repeated them.

Double post!

The Woman In Black 2: Angel of Death. Oddly enough a 15 when the first was a 12, films usually do the other way around. I can only imagine the higher rating is because there's children in it. I enjoyed the first more but it was still well worth the watch and had a good amount of creepy.

The original cinema-verite documentary, very powerful. Learned about it in class but didn't have time to watch it before.

Definitely worth a watch not only if you're interested in Appalachian culture as I am, but in labor rights in general.

The Sunset Limited. How does a play with two characters set in one room translate into an interesting film? Take Cormac McCarthy's brilliant dialogue and insert two monumentally great actors (Tommy Lee Jones and Samuel L. Jackson).

The last two movies I watched were Alien: Isolation and Mass Effect. Yes, I treat walk-throughs like movies. Is that weird of me? I very strongly regard some of these games to be closer to interactive movies than anything else.

the wife and I went to see American Sniper last night.
she wanted to see this movie AND
1. surprised at the brutality (its a WAR movie, hon)
2. hadn't realized it was a true story. (facepalm)
3. was in tears multiple times.

My thought: well done movie.  the closing act and credits brought me to tears as well.

I saw "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and I loved it.  Wes Anderson has made many movies but I haven't had the time to sit down and watch one all the way through so this would be a first time watch of one of his films.   His use of portraying time, fun and interesting characters, gorgeous sets and costumes, and the realistic ending for a crazy caper-esque movie.  It was like someone took a play, a cartoon, and a literary novel and wove them together.  I also liked how, since this is told from the point of view of an immigrant, certain real world organizations are described differently.  The amount of cameos was amazing too.  I wont spoil it but it seems like the most unexpected people show up. I also love, in a strange way, how no one throws an accent, they just speak with their normal voice.

Nick and I have been rolling in free Redbox codes so we'll been watching a lot more movies lately! He fell asleep halfway through Guardians of the Galaxy when we watched it the first time so we saw it again earlier this week. Loved it just as much the second time around :-P

Watched Neighbors yesterday. While there were definitely some laugh out loud moments for me, it wasn't something that I'd buy on DVD or willingly rent again. I'd probably keep it on if I were channel surfing and nothing else was on. Sadly, my favorite parts were the ones with the baby and there just weren't enough of those!

Just watched Transformers: Age of Extinction and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Cons: For a mindless mindlessness fest, Transformers tried way to hard to have plot. Then tried way to hard to stuff action into that plot. It's like the writers developed a trilogy and then were told, put all of that in one movie. For a movie sub titled: The Winter Soldier, Captain America had remarkably little Winter Soldier in it.

Pros: I actually have nothing good to say about Transformers. I've gone into each movie knowing full well it would be crap. This is the first one to actually fall below expectations.

Wait. Scratch that. Marky-Mark is an improvement over Shia, and Kelsy Grammer was impressively evil. I mean, I was damned impressed with Grammer. Too bad that performance was wasted on this movie. Captain America, OTOH was pretty damned cool, even allowing for the paucity of Winter Soldiering. It harkens back to Star Trek (2009). Perfect economy of story telling. Not a wasted scene that I noticed, but still able to have compelling character development.

Verdict: I've blown three hours of life. I'm not getting those back. In addition, some of brain meats will be forever occupied by the fourth Transformers. On the flipside, Marvel continues to entertain.

Winter Soldier likely has detractors. The target run time for a Hollywood movie is 90 minutes. One might think my comment on three blown hours is a reflection on both movies. Don't believe that. Transformers 4 is three hours long.

Three hours. Of terrible movie.

I want to blame the creators, but I could have stopped. Why didn't I stop? Oh god. Why?

The target run time for a Hollywood movie is 90 minutes.
Is this remotely true anymore outside of comedies? Two hours seems to be the general rule now, and most comic book movies are pushing 150 minutes.

Actually even comedies are breaking the two hour mark more and more, which is really starting to irritate me. I remember thinking 40 Year Old Virgin was too long, only to find that on DVD it was twenty minutes longer.

Yup, still true. It's not that the directors want 90 minute films. The studios want it that way.

These days, the big budget movies kinda come with a "do whatever" clause. But, for the most part, the studios don't want to tie up screens too long. A three hour move uses up theater time where a 90 minute move could be shown twice. I should clarify that by the studios i mean those that are also distributors.

It's less a hard rule, in part, because multiscreen theaters means the blockbusters can show on more than one screen at once, while the other films rotate.

Is it cold in here?

Saw American Sniper. B-Coops did a fine job, and it was well made.

It wasn't just your community! It was mostly silence as everyone filed out.

I just watched the Song of the Sea, and it was pretty good. The story wasn't much to write home about, but the animation and music were amazing and I think I liked it better than Secret of Kells

Just watched Electrick Children. Pretty interesting beginning and end, sorta lulled in the middle. A pretty mild movie. I liked it I think.
