I just watched Goosebumps, and it was a lot better than i thought it was going to be. I expected a dumb kids movie, but it was actually pretty smart. My wife and I were cracking up during most of it.

Rewatched Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones and I still like it. I remembered liking the characters when I saw it in the cinema, which is surprising because the two main blokes are depicted stereotypical stoner teenage assbutts for a lot of it. I guess it's that they seem pretty realistic, and they care about each other a lot. Having characters that I care about usually is the clincher in a horror movie for me.

Saw Real Steel tonight. It. Was. Awesome. People shouldn't see the trailer, even though it's a good trailer. The movie's good enough to just watch without any previewing

Saw What We Do in the Shadows yesterday. It was pretty hilarious in a weird understated kinda way. I liked it more than Eagle vs. Shark which was awesome but too awkward for my taste.

Oh yeah, also saw Source Code. It was pretty solid even though you had to see Jake Gyllenhaal's stupid face like all the time

felt v short but still complete.

I watched Chappie, Home, and Hostel

Chappie was okay, not great but not awful. I'm still not sure why Die Antwood was in it and the ending wasn't all that good.
Home was a lot better than I thought it would be, very emotional and with a nice message.
Hostel was just awful from beginning to end.

Saw The Intern last night. Not too complicated, cute characters, good acting by the leads. Basically something you'll like if you see it but won't miss anything if you don't.

I watched Sicario recently, because some friends had given it very good reviews and said I should.

It was okay, but I obviously didn't feel nearly as impressed as my friends did. I guess if anything, there was a sense of justice to the overall story. I think I was left not really knowing what the director or writer were trying to get me to think about. If the message is that confusing, perhaps something wasn't done right. OR maybe I just didn't get it. Don't really know.

Chef - simple feelgood movie for people who live on the internet and who love food. Final act kinda weird.

About Time - Longish movie about awkward Brit who learns that the men in his family can travel back in time at will. Some aspects of the plot are ethically kinda suspect but all in all pleasant and enjoyable movie about people mostly being nice to each other. I liked it a lot

Mean Girls - So I'm a bit late to the party but whatevs. It was fun even though something felt a bit off about it

My friends and I watched The Man from U.N.C.L.E. I'm guessing this is based on som old film or series, because I can't see any other reason why they woul pick such a lame and unfitting name for the movie; I'm betting the name is a big reason behind the mediocre box office, because the movie was pretty decent.

Old show about a spy organization, yeah. Apparently the was no agreement on what UNCLE really stood for. Even more so than the whole SHIELD's meaning changes over the years.

Interesting. Editing is a bit weird and fast so sometimes I was confused but I think that was the intended effect. It's low budget so sometimes the not-so-great CG was distracting but it was the actors that made this film. Charles Dance, in particular, walks a line between fucking terrifying and weirdly comical. Actually this entire film kind of does that. Also one scene made me feel a bit gross which I don't usually get from films. I only learned after I watched it that it's an homage/remake so I'm curious about the original now.

Circle
This gets intense and is fucking amazing to my filmmaker brain. Almost the entire 80 or so minutes takes place in one room in real time, full of dialogue and it works so well. Lots of heavy discussion, sometimes a little in your face, but again, it works for the context. The premise means you're always being surprised. Wasn't fussed on the ending but I think it set itself up to fail with that. Still, I watched the film a couple days ago and I've been thinking about it and the scenarios it brings up which is neat. It only came out last month and must have gone straight to Netflix.

Both are on UK Netflix.

Spectre. It had mixed reviews, but I noticed a lot of people who didn't like it liked Skyfall but didn't like Quantum, which is the opposite of me. It wasn't great, certainly no Casino Royale, but I enjoyed it enough.

Continuing my Western kick I watched the Homesman last night, and damn it's depressing. The basic plot line is that some women have gone plains crazy and need to be sent to a convent/hospital to be taken care of, and no man in town will do it. Instead an unmarried woman takes it upon herself to lead them on the long trek, with the help of someone she finds being hung from a tree. There are some bright moments, but overall it doesn't pull its punches when it comes to life in the old west during settlement days. Hillary Swank and Tommy Lee Jones are pretty great in it though.

I watched the live action Assassination Classroom movie on my flight back home and it was definitely surprising. I wasn't expecting it to be so heartwarming.

Saw The Interview this weekend. I gotta say I wasn't expecting to like it all that much. Franco and Rogen's antics have left me disappointed before

But I was pleasantly surprised. It was funny and sweet and pretty solid. Obv there were limits to how far they could take the story and I'm glad they didn't try to go bigger or deeper.

"They hate us 'cause they anus" is my favourite line.

Saw Trainwreck last night. It was better than Apatow's last two, and I'd have liked it a lot more if not for a few just...really bad scenes. It didn't help that John Cena's character was just one long gay joke.

I liked John Cena in it but more in a, "Holy crap I never thought I'd see this person saying and doing these things" kind of way. Also disappointing is I think one of his best jokes was in the trailer but not the film.
