Saw The Witch last night. I think its marketing as a horror movie isn't exactly accurate but it's a damn good period piece with a constant feeling of dread. Definitely recommending it to everyone.

Watched West Of Memphis. Dark, harrowing, terrifying and brilliant. For people who loved Making A Murderer but would prefer not to want to kill themselves when the credits roll.

Class was boring and the exam grade expectations are low so a friend and I went to her place and watched Human Centipede 3 while eating cake for supper.

I just watched the newer Fantastic Four movie and it wasn't as bad as people were saying it was. Sure, it wasn't very good, but it did body horror nicely. I kind of wonder where they were going to go from there considering how dark it was supposed to be.

I just saw The Room, ake the 2015 abduction drama, not the 2003 cult film.

It was pretty good, very moving. I especially liked that it delved a little past the point where you'd expect the conventional "happy ending" to be, and looked at the aftermath. The child actor here could be someone to keep an eye on in the future!

I just watched Unfriended and Seventh Son, two very different movies. Unfriended is a somewhat subtle horror movie told through a laptop about a vengeful ghost taking her fury out on her old friends, while Seventh Son is a fantasy epic. I definitely liked the story of Unfriended better, it really uses the laptop in creative ways, though the visuals in Seventh Son were pretty good.

I still can't get past the fact that Jeff Bridges is in Seventh Son, he's just so goofy in it.

TRON (1982) - Incredibly dated (with 8-bit arcade cabinets and mainframe computing considered the height of technology). The then-experimental SFX was also pretty rough in places with the mesh between the actors and the CGI scenery often jarringly bad (the actors keep on glitching out and going black-and-white due to the blending 'washing out' non-CGI colour).

However, the technical quibbles aside, it remains a fairly good early-80s Disney romp with all the tropes and cliché characterisations seamlessly ported into the digital world. If you get the chance, read Brian Daley's novelisation of the movie. It includes a half-dozen deleted scenes and does an excellent job of filling in the blanks of plot and the characterisations, explaining otherwise-incomprehensible moments in the movie (including a few 'looks awesome but why?' scenes in the movie).

For all it lacks the technical sophistication of the recent reboot/sequel, TRON: Legacy, the original had a certain narrative purity and science-fantasy innocence that the more recent offering lacks.

Just watched the Revenant (i know a bit late).

Stunning scenery, but dont think it was AS good as I had expected. A bit too much of a classic American Hero / Hellonistic father/son avenge story ... I mean how many times have we seen that right?

Di Caprio was good, but Hardy better. Was kind of distracted about how little (read: never) di Caprio blinks. What is up with that?

They are both surprisingly entertaining. There is a lot of meat in that concept to crank out a lot of sequels without getting stale.

There was an episode of the Powerpuff Girls back in the day where a villain bought the town and declared that "crime is legal". So that's what my first thought was when The Purge came out.

Kung Fu Panda 3

It spoke to my inner millennial and was also funny, beautiful, moving, exciting and just plain enjoyable. God I love these movies <3

It wasn't as good as the previous one though. Too chicken to let really good moments play out properly, choosing instead to release tension prematurely with jokes and gags. Still really fun though and Oogwai, Sifu and Tigress remain some of my favourite animated characters :)

Kinda lame how they made certain groups the butt of lame jokes for cheap laughs and I think it would have been better if it had been a little less American and a little more influenced by Chinese martial arts movies.

I just saw Unfriended too, and it wasn't as bad as I expected.  It felt odd that a horror movie would have me rooting for the killer.  I did like the way it used the laptop screen to tell the story.  This movie would probably be more fun to watch on a desktop or laptop than a TV or a theater screen.

The majority of horror movies want you to root for the killer. That is the problem with modern horror. Even films I like, like the Saw series, have this problem. I should be rooting for the protagonist to survive, not for the killer to gut someone spectacularly.

I watched Deathgasm and Blind

Deathgasm was a fun, silly horror movie where some kids get sheet music that summons a demon and turns all their neighbors into it's pawns.

Blind was a strange movie about a woman slowly losing her sight and coming to terms with it by making a story that almost mirrors her life, except in the story her husband is unfaithful and she's being stalked by some guy with a crush on her.

I didn't watch it myself, but a friend watched Batman v Superman today.

She was literally jumping up and down with excitement over this film when I spoke with her on the weekend.

She is in a much grumpier mood now.

Yes, occasionally the film works out better than the trailer implies. It was hard to imagine in this case, but I'm like sitnspin here. I could draw a venn diagram, but I think you'll get the idea.

superhero films = avoid
X vs Y films = definitely avoid
intersection of the above categories = not even if it were the only film left on earth

I absolutely did not have high expectations but I didn't expect the reaction to be this negative. I haven't seen it yet but I'm considering just avoiding it. I don't like what DC's doing in its movies, I don't really like what Snyder does to movies, I'm not a big fan of this take on Superman and I can't help but feel like DC has encountered a divide-by-cucumber error.

A movie about stereotypes, inequality, bigotry, drugs, fear mongering as a tool to control the masses, and doing the right thing.  I am of course talking about Disney's new movie Zootopia.  It was amazing.  My wife cried like 3 times as she really identified with the main character and her situation.  I highly recommend checking this one out.

From the trailers and stuff I really had no interest in Zootopia. But hearing all these reviews I'm going to have to see it. I'll probably wait till it hits Netflix or something though... Not in that big a hurry.
