I saw Rambo: First Blood yesterday. I saw it as a kid but didn't fully appreciate the story until now.
(click to show/hide)
I am not sure how it was classified back in the 80s but I feel like it is more a drama than an action movie, with the sequels changing up the formula and becoming action movies. Kind of like how Alien is a horror movie while Aliens is more an action movie. I am kind of surprised that in this age of reboots, origin stories, and prequels that there hasn't been one of Rambo in Vietnam. I am glad they haven't but am surprised they didn't. Probably because the Mouse Empire doesn't have the movie rights.

The film is much more sympathetic towards Rambo than the novel.

Are you thinking of motion capture?

Yes and no. MoCap is the technology. While it's easily acceptable to add single non-human animated characters like Gollum for the LotR movies (although MoCap alone supposedly would've yielded a lot of uncanny valley), making the whole thing photorealistic animation is an entirely different thing.

Even if everything that's natural is motion capped, talking animals is something else entirely. you can't MoCap that. and we know it's obviously fake, and animated.
The Wookie approach is different though. In spite of basically being a bipedal animal, the "talking" is done in their own, native way. like if we actually could understand cats meowing, only by their sounds, without any context (like proximity to doors, or food, or time of day)

Oh wow. I thought I had seen the directors cut of Kingdom of Heaven, but apparently I only saw the extended cut. I need to watch the Director's cut now. Those lost scenes were paramount to those characters. Damn you studio interference!

I haven't seen "I'm gonna git you sucka!" in over a decade. I caught the ending half when I got home today and was reminded how amazing it was. To the uninitiated, think of the movie Airplane but instead of it being a spoof of airplane disaster movies, it spoofs blaxploitation movies. Written, directed, and staring Keenen Ivory Wayans.

Awesome film. John Vernon's appearance and monologue is one of the best reveals ever.

I read a few years back that Kevin Smith was making BB into a teevee series; season 1 to retell the story of the film, and season 2 to be "Against the World Crime League".

But that's not the first time I've heard of a Kevin Smith project that failed to get off the ground (Fletch, anyone?)

In 1973, Eiichi Yamamoto, director of the first Astro Boy movie and Kimba the White Lion, released one of the most psychedelic movies ever made, which was recently rescued from being lost by a new 4k restoration, including censored scenes of which only one print survived.  Trippier than Mind Game, drawing on influences like Beardsley, Klimt, Kandinsky, pop art and many more, the animation varies from slowly panned watercolour images to full movement.  People are ugly, and the story is uglier.  The main female character is raped near the start, which is represented wildly abstractly and yet very graphically, and later there are full-on orgies.  The devil appears as a penis with a face, growing larger as his influence on the MC increases.  The character ends up being burned as a witch, and the story is hinted to be related to that of Joan of Arc.  The story is fairly thin for the length of the film (and is sometimes hard to follow because of the whackiness of the graphics through which it is told), and past the middle some people feel that it drags - but it continues to fascinate.  Is it an expression of feminism, or is it overblown soft porn? - the critics sure can't agree.  You just have to watch it for yourself.

What is this extraordinary film?  It's called Kanashimi no Beradona - Belladonna of Sadness.

Apparently it was also an influence on Revolutionary Girl Utena.

The live action Kim Possible movie was not as bad as I was led to expect. Casting and characterization of the four primary characters (Kim, Ron, Drakken, and Shego) was great, and the first half of the film was pretty fun. It just fell off in quality after that.
I wouldn't mind seeing a regular series with the movie cast. I guess I know what I would do with the Infinity Gauntlet. 😁

Avengers: Endgame

Satisfying to be able to conclude this overlong chapter of my life. Good story, plenty of cool stuff, lot of genuinely laugh-out-loud moments, and not quite as much melodrama as I'd feared. Thanos didn't suck as much this time. Not too keen on the inane fapping over bros being serious with each other bro-style, coupled with the contemptuous nods to the women in both the movie and in the audience. Decidedly creepy vibes that kinda ruined Captain Marvel's character, for example. But, all in all... worth it.

I know its TV and not a movie but since we got HBO to watch Game of thrones, Fraggle Rock is on HBO around the time we try to put my 1yo daughter to bed. Unlike other shows where she doesn't care to watch and gets fussy (Except TNG, she loves Picard's voice) she has been utterly entranced with the Fraggles. I've never seen her so enthralled in a TV show since TNG. I haven't seen Fraggle rock since I was a kid on the Disney channel (when the cable company would give it to us for free for a week to entice new subscriptions which only happened once a year if we were lucky). I am just so excited that she likes it. We almost didn't watch it yesterday (her first time watching it) because my wife was worried it would be too loud for her to fall asleep to. I asked her to give it a chance and sure enough my daughter was glued to watching it while drinking her milk and was ready for bed by the end of it.

That one is sleeping on my DVR since the last "Free HBO" weekend (along with a few other films we recorded then).

Isn't the "real" title Cock Blockers? It's basically American Pie with girls as the main characters, right?

Yeah its suppose to be called cock blockers. The 3 girls have a similar sex pact like the guys from American Pie but they make it with each other on prom day instead of earlier in the school year. The story isn't really about them so much as about their parents who stumble on their group chat and they go out of their way to prevent them from having sex. Comedy ensues. I'd say its more for parents than teenagers whereas American Pie was a teen comedy. I don't want to spoil the movie for you but the parents are the A plot and the teens are the B plot.

It was practically a parody of Americanism in TV. I, too, lasted only two episodes.

I've read the book the American Gods show is based on. Some things are the same, same things are completely different. But the show does a good job at story telling, and I like the style of the show.

I quite liked Hanna.

Odd detail: Joel Kinnaman's delivery of German is uncanny-valley levels of good, which is very, very rare. His bio only lists Swedish and English - Is Swedish pronunciation that close to German? Can they all do that?  :-o

Could just be good at doing his lines phonetically through rote.  IIRC, Peter Lorre had to do that for several films when he first came to the US.

IDK - I guess it's not impossible, but for that to work, your brain needs to have all the phonemes of the other language mapped out, and ... there's quite a few typical 'anglophonisms' that give away an English speaker, like the '(s)ch' and the umlouts, the vowels ... (It can even be difficult to hear the difference if the phonemes in your language sound similar). Usually, people will use the phonemes of their native language to 'approximate' those of the other one, which works up to a point. But if you want to sound like a native speaker, you have to forget your old toolbox and build a new one. Then there's melody, rhythm, pauses - German has less variation in pitch than French or English (think Schwarzenegger). The glottal stop (used e.g. in the Cockney-accent) is a standard element of pronunciation, but has no associated letter or symbol, nor is it acknowledged at all. In fact, I didn't even know that I was doing it until a linguist showed me ...

Kinnaman does none of that - he pronounces the phonemes, even the difficult ones, as if he had grown up with them. No 'anglophonisms' at all. When I say uncanny level, I mean just that: His delivery is almost perfect. Tiny deviations in emphasis, vowel length etc. but otherwise ... perfect.

So I figure he isn't using his English-phoneme toolbox when he spoke that dialogue - but maybe the Swedish one?

Swedish is definitely closer to German phoneme-wise, but he could also just have a German family member or something.

Anyway, anything else on Prime worth watching?

I, uh, can't actually get Vikings? I thought Amazon didn't do region restriction. My subscription is even made through the German domain, so I'd expect to have the same selection as you.

The Expanse looked interesting, so I'll check that out. American Gods I'm already caught up on, of course.

Huh? Just checked, and ... yes, I got Seasons 1-3, 401-402, 501-502

"Verkauft durch Amazon Instant Video Germany GmbH" <- Do you see this? Maybe they handle the licenses through national subsidiaries (GmbH is a LLC under German law). Usually, I get the Luxembourg branch's address (Amazon EU Sàrl) on my bank statements.

Maybe try a (second?) billing address somewhere in Northrhine-Palatine?

The Expanse looked interesting, so I'll check that out.

It is. If you like it, consider checking out the novel series - at least as good & there's quite a bit more content than the series has covered so far.

The Expanse is among the very best scifi shows of the past few years. There are some lulls in each season due to pacing issues, but the characterization & chemistry just get better and better. That flip-and-burn sequence still gives me goosebumps :)

By now, I've read all the books. The show changes a few things due to pacing and stuff, but not too much.

What I like about The Expanse is that it's not too far away now, physics still applies in full, and everyone is as human as it gets. Plus the show does a good job.

Yeah, physics applies in full ... what I didn't like so much is that they're actually a bit behind the curve in some respects - on the one hand, their emphasis of the physiological effects of high acceleration as a limiting factor for spacecraft manoeuvrability is brilliant. On the other, their discussion of the possible remedies a society 100 years into our future might have come up with is not.

More to the point: Hydrostatic anti-g suits/chambers/whatever - dunking the human body into an incompressible fluid (with approximately the same density as blood) contained within hard shell drastically reduces the acceleration it experiences. That's why dragonflies can pull 30+g manoeuvrers without tearing their inner organs apart. There already exists a field-deployed g-suit that significantly reduces the effects of high acceleration on the human body (libelle g-multiplus, deployed with Swiss & German air forces). Afaics, this contemporary system would only be suitable to counter effects of short-term acceleration, but that's why it's called science fiction, no? IIRC, the Libelle prototype, a hard-shell suit filled with fluid that covered the entire body up to the neck achieved even better results, but wasn't suited for deployment in contemporary fighters (hard to walk in a hardshell suit). I'd imagine that would be less of a problem in a far larger spaceship.

Instead, we get some unspecified meds that allegedly increase the body's g-tolerance - what Alex calls 'The Juice' - but that seems like so much handwavium?

I'm guessing it's just stimulants and things to increase your blood pressure so you don't pass out and go limp, which would leave you unable to brace against the g-forces and break your neck or something? That would explain why it woke Alex right up.

What I like about The Expanse is that it's not too far away now, physics still applies in full...

Apart from the fact that there ain't no stealth in space, but you can't win 'em all, I guess.

Yeah - thing is that Expanse ships regularly keep up multiple-g burns for days and weeks on end. I guess it is possible to medically increase their bloodpressure (to a degree - one should remember that grey-out/black-out is due to low blood-pressure in the brain, not due to overall low blood-pressure), but I'm a bit sceptical about the mid-/longterm risks of severe damages to the cardiovascular system.

I mean: Having your pilot awake & perky when they engage the enemy after a three week, six-g burn is probably what you'd want - them suffering a heart-attack or a stroke midway through the engagement, though? Probably not ...

Edit: Or why not have gimballed couches? If you bring heart and brain on the same height relative to the direction of acceleration, there'd be no g-lock at all - In airplanes that's not feasible, as a lying position would restrict the pilot's field of view. In a spacecraft, that'd be less of a concern - due to the vast distances involved and the absence of a horizon, cutting windows into the hull at a fixed position wouldn't be that useful anyhow compared to just putting up viewscreens wherever it's most convenient for the pilot.

(*) No exactly true - even if you laid down facing in the direction of the acceleration, your brain-tissues would not all be at the same 'height', so the tissues at the back of your head would still be at a higher blood-pressure than those at the front. But that pressure-difference would be proportional to the difference in height - i.e. merely some 7-8cm - which is much smaller than the 30-35cm between your heart and brain.

By now, I've read all the books. The show changes a few things due to pacing and stuff, but not too much.

What I like the most is how well the books and the show complement one another. I saw the show first, so I see the actors when I read the books (taking a break now after Abaddon's Gate). The tone & voice are different in each, but I love both. The show brings the Belt to life in a way the books do not, esp. with the extensive use of Belter creole, the fantastic portrayal of Anderson Dawes as well as various OPA figures, the gorgeous visuals etc. I prefer Alex, Kamal, Naomi & Holden in the show, while Miller's and Bobbie's portrayals in each medium enhances the other. There are a lot of characters in the books that get more depth in the show, and vice versa. Overall, I think the changes made for the show have been positive.

I'm guessing it's just stimulants and things to increase your blood pressure so you don't pass out and go limp, which would leave you unable to brace against the g-forces and break your neck or something? That would explain why it woke Alex right up.

It's just a plot-device, but the most important components are unspecified concoctions that prevent blood clots, ensure adequate circulation in the brain, protect blood vessels & viscera under extremely high-g acceleration, reduce discomfort/pain, and sedate personnel. For personnel that need to be awake and alert, there are optional stimulants.

Apart from the fact that there ain't no stealth in space, but you can't win 'em all, I guess.

Stealth ships don't actually disappear. The books give a good explanation that those ships use similar stealth tech we know to minimize radar detection, there are countermeasures to infrared/heat detection of the hull, and they're usually painted black as optical camouflage. What they can't hide is the drive plume, aka exhaust, so they'd have to go adrift.

As far as The Juice is concerned: that truly falls under science fiction, and is mostly a plot device.

Yes, the books mention gimbaled couches all the time, they're standard issue. Mostly.
And I don't remember many ships actually having windows, or at least not on the bridge. Viewscreens have the advantage of being able to get all information, and maybe all the controls to any station you like (for whatever reason).

Now I really understand the feeling black people got watching Black Panther, and women got watching Captain Marvel. It IS nice to see a superhero that looks like you.

Finally watched Aquaman and it was actually alright. So much better than Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, and Justice League, but not quite as good as Wonder Woman or Shazam.

Saw Endgame on Saturday.

Loved the film. Hated the fact that my knee locked because I was there for 3 hours.

So, it's a movie that exists, in other words?
