I liked that version a lot.

I just put on Franz Ferdinand's You Could Have it So Much Better. Thanks, shuffle!

Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits are amazing.  I can listen to and love their music anytime.

Ricco, I don't know if you can get the iPlayer in the US. Probably not, since the BBC are a bunch o£$^BUN%&FWW$CFGV^^B%

*pant*

Okay, calm now.

Fleetwood Mac's "Tango In The Night".

As it stands now, I'm sort of leaning towards calling this a better album than "Rumours", even when factoring in "Dreams."
Seriously. "Big Love" is such a painfully amazing song.

That is some jaw-dropping guitar work and I am livid at the cameraman for not showing it properly.

Actually my killer favourite is the old 'film the lead guitarist's strumming hand when he's playing a guitar solo instead of his fretting hand.'

Watching Haim in session on the BBC website it drove me crazy that she has two guitar solos on 'Falling' and the guitar is barely shown in either one.

With my usual Laphroaig in hand, I am listening to various and sundry people sing "Matty Groves", both on my personal music collection, and on YouTube.  The various and sundry people include Doc Watson, Linde Nijland, Bashful Mountain, and Joan Baez.

Edit:  In response from a comment from somebody not on the forum:  Sandy Denny is not "various and sundry people", she is the standard.

Bunratty sounds like an interesting drink....How does meade compare to brandy?

Mead is a honey wine.  There are those who do not think that Bunratty Mead is real mead, and it may not be.  However, it is a sweet wine, with a crisp taste, and an after taste that I can't truly identify, although it reminds me of anise.  I really like it.

My daughter and son-in-law brought sample bottles of it back from a trip to Ireland, and gave it to me as a Christmas gift.  They also brought me back a sample bottle of pocheen, which I have not tried yet.

Ahh, okay. In that case, mead would be closer to rum, which is distilled from sugarcane molasses or sugarcane juice. An excellent beverage indeed. Potcheen's method sounds similar to American moonshine, usually distilled from corn, but uses other materials when necessary (barley, bananas, etc).

Aaaaand to keep these posts from defaulting to the sobriety thread...I am currently listening to my cat purring over the lyrical majesty of Mr. Freddie Mercury and his delightful companions. They're crooning a ballad known as "Bohemian Rhapsody".

Yes, potcheen is essentially Irish moonshine.  And I am currently watching my cat (who is trying to sleep on a shelf above my computer) as I listen to Alex Beaton, currently singing "Sound The Pibroch".

Potcheen is interesting in that I have never met anyone who makes it but I must know about twenty people who "know someone" who can get it.

celticgeek: You like Laphroaig? Have you tried the Laphroaig Quarter Cask? I much prefer it over ordinary Laphroaig, the taste is even stronger, but not the taste of alcohol. I brought a bottle to a Whisky meeting at the 29C3, and there were many people who liked it most. Though I preferred the 14 years old Talisker Distillers Edition someone was kind enough to bring.

And what is not to like about mead?

And to participate in the original intention of the thread: currently I'm listening to Mogwai's "Music for a Forgotten Future (The Singing Mountain)". So unbelievably soothing. I'm fairly new to this kind of music, but during the last week I've been listening nearly solely to Explosions in the Sky, Mogwai and Sigur Rós.

A discussion I had lately now led to me listening to Beethoven's 6th Symphony, by the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, conducted by Riccardo Chailly. Beethoven's music gains so much energy by Chailly's interpretation.

Macca I got no problems with, he is one of the last world-eating, nation-conquering super-popstars we have left and it will be a sad day when he dies because his kind will never be replaced.

Wings, on the other hand...

That's like saying 'You may have cancer, but at least it's not rectal cancer.'

The Beatles, aside from like 1970-1973 and a few individual songs and albums after that, have utterly rancid solo careers.

Watch Higashi No Eden? Falling Down is the opening song for that anime and it's absolutely brilliant.

Although if it's the more proggy elements of that version that you like, check out Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson. They have similar stuff although all of Steven Wilson's music has a sort of haunted, creepy feeling to it. Jethro Tull may also be something you enjoy, it's kind of proggy hardrock with a lot of flutes that are similar to that song (or more likely, those parts were very heavily inspired by Ian Anderson).

Die Antwoord - Liewe Maatjies

The problem with Die Antwoord is that their first album was just too bloated. Beat Boy was literally twice as long as it needed to be, and a lot of songs just had nothing that made them stand out, the rapping is sub-par, and I'm not even touching this monstrosity. It has its moments (Wat Kyk Jy, Enter the Ninja, $copie, $o$) but by and large it's a fairly forgettable album.

Which is strange, given that their second album is such a killer. It's like the difference between Gaga's The Fame and The Fame Monster - someone, at some point, realised that an album with 20 mediocre songs on it isn't as good as an album with 10 great songs on it.
