I wrote a simulator in POV-Ray that can take an arbitrary position of Newton's Cradle and solve for the position at later times. It's not the most accurate, since it assumes only two-body interactions and there's no dissipation of energy. Not much of an accomplishment, but it occupied a boring day in which I was the only person who showed up at the lab.

So, anyway, pretty picture:

First, an explanation.

I have synesthesia, meaning my senses are cross-wired. I hear music, it has color, it has motion, it has shape. So, I take advantage of that, and draw songs, albums, etc.

My avatar is one of these; it's how the song Inspector of Inspectors by Driftless Pony Club looks to me, pastel and prismacolor

These are pretty big, so I'll put what I post in spoilers with just the song title so you can decide if you want to see

That's a really interesting way to create art and make use of your synesthesia. I particularly like Crazy Train, maybe because it's in charcoal I can easily follow the movement in it and the swooping lines next to the straight ones looks neat. Sweet Child Of Mine has nice contrast with the colour and black/grey.

Hi folks, not quite the right thread for this but may as well have a bash. My girlfriend wants to start selling her work, or prints of it, online, and isn't really sure where to start. She thinks she should be using an etsy account(?), and she wanted to know with prints whether when selling them they'd need to always be framed, and if so what kind of frame she should be going with.

Could someone please halps?

It might work in her favor to offer frames but make them optional. Does she know how to mat? Just matting them might amp up the professional look without adding significant costs. If she doesn't know how, I'm pretty sure most craft stores offer standard pre-cut ones. If she does decide to offer frames, I've always been partial to the minimalist frames that really let the art speak for itself.

Kind of like this one:
http://www.michaels.com/studio-decor-basics-metro-frame/M10137858.html?dwvar_M10137858_color=Black#q=Metro+frame&start=1

She might want to look into creating her own website and selling on there as well. I've heard from some people on Etsy that there have been some changes being made that don't sit well with sellers.

Ditto what lepetitfromage said. All of it.

What she might think is the perfect frame/mat combo might not be what someone else likes. I'd also suggest looking into other sellers, since there are other options out there that might work better for what she's trying to do (or that might have better fee structures, etc.).

I started on a commission for my best friend today! She bought an apartment with her boyfriend last year and they have a huge, empty wall to fill so I thought I'd make them a large painting. This is just the rough starting point of course, but I have a good feeling about it.

Hey, ChaosP, you may have said before, but do images sound like things, or is it strictly one way?

Trying to boost attention to me comic, so I've got into the vote incentive game. Obviously, these aren't the full images, and neither is an active incentive, atm. They'll be first and second week of next month if you really want to see the whole thing, but I don't actually expect anyone to follow up from here.

I'm just absurdly happy with these. I'm glad I don't really need both arms to do art because I'm likely to break one patting myself on the back.

ReindeerFlotilla, it's just the one way, sound -> colors. A bit of sound->motion, too, helps with configuring spaces, some

Pandering isn't exactly my proudest choice there, but it's been very effective.

The total traffic response has been about half of what I spent good money generating through ads on gunnerkrieg, and a 1/3 of QC. Infinitely cheaper.

Sound = motion?

Sounds dizzying. Actually, I almost understand that. I've always scored well on people's estimates of aesthetics and visual construction, but I hardly see pictures in my head. Sometimes a flash of something. I feel them. Like a sense of space filling, or movement. But I don't think I've ever just looked at something and felt that, so I wouldn't consider it any kind of sensory cross over. Rather just the way I do imagery.

I'd hang them in my house.

I don't know if this counts as ArtWork, but I painted this 28mm figurine at Historicon.

speed painting.  from bare metal to this in 60 minutes.

I ran out of time to apply a finishing wash, attach a spurt of flamethrower flame I made, or give him a clear coat.
but pretty good for anyone's game board.

Exactly!

We'll no, but sorta. I have this idea. I'm not sharing. But the foundation of the idea is a modified tarot deck. Since I have the characters, I figured I'd make the cards. So this is the core image for the Lovers card. I decided to got light on core symbolism, because I'm not sure what the card means yet. But I do have the core concept that the cards are their own antonyms. So the card can be read to be good or bad, depending on how it is interacting, and where it crops up. So, I tried to set up an image that can be read as tender or domineering. A connection or a struggle. It depends on, hopefully, what you want to see in the image.

I don't actually know what I would use it for. The weapons are based on some stuff from some sketches I did a while back (the original sketch for the first one, the C-Rifle, is like four years old; the Dawnbreaker was sketched a few months ago). I was just aiming to create.
I've never played FTL. Is it good?

WIP sprite of a dude holding a (resprited) laser rifle. Just the basic outlines so far, plus helmet.

Looking at it now, I need to fix up the glowspots on the helmet, they look slightly obnoxious. Narrow them in just a tiny bit, a teense closer together, yeah
(the rifle was scaled, cubic interpolation, then re-sprited on a new layer with the resize half-visible beneath it. the helmet actually had to get scaled down a bit and i didn't correct the glowspots afterwards)

Is this rendered? From 3D models?

Anyhow, this looks amazing! The facial expressions are well beyond the 'uncanny valley'-look of some other rendered comics I've seen.

Thank you! Yup, all 3D. Aside from resizing the images to fit the comic template, there's no post work at all. Render, resize, add text. Pretty much the whole workflow.

Facial expressions are hard. So I cheat.

I do all the hard work, but I start from an easier place. Most people doing this kind of art use realistic human models. I do mine in cartoon style. Beyond that, I try to avoid symmetric expressions.

There's a lot of work that goes into an expression and looking over my whole comic, I can see places where I hadn't quite figured out how to do it and others where I clearly phoned it in.

But the biggest cheat is the 'toon rendering. I think that does more to offset the uncanny valley than anything else. Not to apply false humility and say my other efforts don't help. But the presentation starts by signaling "this is not real." Getting the mind away from looking for realism probably takes most of the uncanny right out.

So back in 2010, I drew this:

I consider that the first piece of art I'm still (mostly) proud of, so, five years later, when it came to trying to produce enough work to fill a portfolio, I chose this general piece to re-work.

I didn't draw it exactly the same, because that would be boring, and I do believe I've improved in at least a few areas. I did a bit of embellishing, adding design elements, directions, highlights using metallic sharpies:

I don't really think of this as "art", but it's the first sketch I made with the Wacom tablet now that it's working, and the first time I've really used Krita.  I spent about 1/2 an hour, maybe 40 minutes on it, starting off in symmetry mode (I was reading a tutorial on Krita, and got distracted on the first item) for the line art, and then playing around with different art and texture brushes.

So. I recently came back to drawing stuff after nearly a decade's hiatus.

Today I uploaded the first picture I am relatively happy with (the previous ones were mostly practice, so I think they're interesting, but they ain't exactly pretty).

Might as well share:

So, I've been drawing again.

This would be most recent. It's roughly how Tupac's Changes looks to me.

This would be Anarchy in the U.K. Sex Pistols. Bad scan quality, but whatever.

And this one would be Believe, by The Bravery.
