California rules. 2am is last sell, Sundays are fair game, and grocery stores have giant fuckin sections for booze. Plus, I live in California's oldest (and best; fuck you Napa Valley) wine region. Incredible stuff available here. I am so goddamn spoiled it isn't even funny.

So is Maryland! Though I know there are a couple rules, I don't actually know what they are. We definitely can't get alcohol in grocery stores or most convenience stores, except in places like Fallston, which have lower populations and fancier/richer people.

Red indicates 'dry' and yellow 'semi-dry'
There doesn't seem to be any standard for what 'semi-dry' means though.
My county in Michican seems to be semi dry but I can drink at a restaurant or bar, buy liquor, beer or wine at a grocery store, a gas station or a liquor store on any day of the week, get my beer to go from a bar, or even have beer, wine, or liquor delivered.

Michigan's representation on that map puzzles me too. What can you do in the blue counties that you can't do in the yellow? My first thought is that some townships in each of the yellow areas have some restrictions on hours of sales or limitations on where package beer and wine can be sold. Some cities, for example, in the past banned sales of beer and wine at gas stations. BTW, I was told in my couple of years in Ann Arbor that Division St. divided the part of the city where bars could be located from the part nearer the University. Pretzel Bell, Metzger's and Old German were on the other side of that street.

Interestingly, the article that map comes from contradicts the map. According to the article there are no dry counties in Oklahoma because state law actually prohibits counties and cities from banning alcohol. The map, however, shows a bunch of dry counties in Oklahoma.

The Great State of Montgomery County isn't dry but has more restrictions than the rest of Maryland. There are lots of independent beer & wine shops, but liquor is only sold at county stores, and they (as far as I have ever seen) don't sell cold beer. The county stores recently changed their hours to be open on Sunday afternoons. But it's a big improvement over PG County where you feel like you're gonna get stabbed at every liquor store ever. MoCo has some weird rules about grocery stores too - only one location from each chain can sell alcohol, or something like that? It's really weird to go to Virginia and see beer at the gas station.

New York is pretty lenient. Only annoying thing here is that you can't buy beer and liquor at the same place. Last call is 4am and you can buy beer 24/7 pretty much everywhere. Wine and liquor are more restricted but not so much so that it's an inconvenience. I don't typically buy my booze before noon on Sundays anyway  :-P

Interesting fact: there are 10 dry towns in the state- one of them is Neversink, which is actually pretty close to my parents' house.

"Freight" has way too many letters.

Well at least "freight" goes logically alongside "eight".  Of course, the same sound can be written "ate" when you've eaten it with a "mate", or (two spellings of the same word, with divided etymology) "ait" = "eyot" - which is a small island, especially in a river.

Fun with spelling: queue; cue; Kew*; mew; lieu.

My mom had a second cousin she never told me about. It's probably because she may not have known about him, back in the pre-internet age of the 60's and 70's.

However, I have actually been in contact with him, and was recently surprised to find he had a lengthy bio on WP as a noted pop artist (though part of me wonders if it was more publicity writeup than bio).

Since I don't have the cash laying around, my chance at getting a Gene Beery original is likely slim. Especially when his most famous work is "Free Art Tomorrow".

Playing guitar has got me into at least one girl's pants. And it's certainly assisted with at least two more.

Amusingly my ex-wife is probably the one who gave the least shits about it.

Talent is surprisingly overrated. When it comes to most skills, you can do pretty much anything as well as the best humans, given enough practice.

VLC Media Player is the best. I shot a short video of the thunderstorm outside my window the other day - there's lightning at 2.20 and 3.10 - and VLC lets you slow it down enough that you can see it frame-by-frame.

Skills/"talent" can be taught- it's the dedication, passion and artistry that really puts someone at the top of their game. The kind of stuff that comes from knowing that you were born to do it.

I'm pretty sure there's a flaw there but not remembering/ever knowing about the exact details, I'll hazard that it's something to do with the space itself getting larger rather than the distance between objects in the space. Don't quote me on that though.

We have SCIENCE. Direct all your inquires there.

I'm not sure which is true, but I heard that space getting bigger means that it takes longer to travel from one point to another. That's why it's impossible for us to travel to the most distant galaxies: the space in between galaxies grows faster than we can travel, so even if we could travel close to light speed, we could never reach them. I suppose that must also mean that things here on Earth are getting further apart.

So the next time your grandfather says he had to walk ten miles to school when he was young, you can tell him that ten miles used to be a shorter distance than it is now! In your face!

Playing guitar has got me into at least one girl's pants. And it's certainly assisted with at least two more.

Amusingly my ex-wife is probably the one who gave the least shits about it.

I'm reminded of my ex who owned a guitar and he'd hold it on Skype sometimes but now that I think about it, I don't think he ever played it. I even remember calling him on Skype, it took him a few minutes to answer (when he'd normally answer instantly) and he was sitting on his bed, turned away, posing with guitar, strummed for a few seconds and then turned to the camera all, "Oh, hi, didn't realise you were there!"

More guitar: My brother tried to teach me bass when I was in my early teens but we both gave up after a couple months. He still plays but I think we were still in the hating each other stage of our relationship and it was a bonding experiment that didn't fully work.

Not guitar: My partner likes games shows. A lot.

Is it cold in here?

So the next time your grandfather says he had to walk ten miles to school when he was young, you can tell him that ten miles used to be a shorter distance than it is now! In your face!

Don't try that on this grandfather. Besides, it was only a mile.

But when M. C. Escher had to walk to school in the snow, it was uphill both ways.
