My Twitter handle (PMable if you want it) does have my real name attached to it and a link to my blog in which I reference my own life. However my Facebook is so private that only friends of friends can see me and they can't even add me. This is because on Facebook, I talk about work.

This reminded me of how a couple of months ago a guy decided to find out my dead name, where I am, friends/family etc. He admitted to doing it. After mumbling out how "that's not okay.." the response was "Sorry for knowing how to use the internet".

Refused to give any kind of even vague apology for it, instead he was angry about me "attacking him for his honesty", told me to "just be rational about it" or how it didn't make sense for me to be upset about going through things like that because I had a picture of me as a kid up somewhere, which apparently means everything from back then is public (whether I volunteer it or not)? He didn't understand at all why it'd be something that'd bother me.

My email address contains my name which is why I don't make it public.  My and my family's privacy are very important to me.  It started as an attempt (after seeing a QC t-shirt on one of my students) to keep my students out of my private life, but it soon became more than that as I revealed more of my life in here. 

And there's much I haven't revealed which can hurt others, most importantly the ones I love.  So yeah, privacy and all.

I am rather open on the internet, especially here, but I still don't share anything that could hurt anyone I care about. If an ex-boyfriend or two were to find this forum, they might be a little upset, but it is all truthful.

I am also rather easy to find, and that is largely my fault. It doesn't help that I have a unique name and username, though.

When I had a FB account (note: My Ex was the one who created it... even caught her posting in it pretending to be me... and eventually I deleted the whole account), I had the privacy settings locked so far down that you literally could only see my profile name (same as my user handle here) unless you were directly on my friends list.  And I was highly selective of who went on it... I had to know you in RL.

I had FB, and was very open & gregarious online with my info.
that ALL changed when the Crazy-bint-Stalker-bitch tried to DESTROY my life.
it got so bad, that I had to have a conference with all my Scouts' parents; just to reassure them I wasn't Ted Bundy or worse.

My personal reputation was irrevocably stained, and that is one thing I'll never forgive.

I do have my Privacy Settings on FB up fairly high, and in order for me to add you, I have to know you from somewhere (RL, Longtime Forumite, etc) before I'll add you and even then, you'd better make damned sure I can ID you before I even consider adding you in.

I upped my privacy settings on FB once I started student teaching- that whole "potential employers can and WILL look at it". I'm fairly open about my life online, but I'm right there with Neko- nothing that I think would put myself or someone I know in jeopardy.

I've had a few random people try and add me, and generally I just ignore them. I know about 95% of my FB friends in real life, and others I've added simply because they are interesting people/friends of friends, but those are few and far between.

Whenever the possibility that someone I know in real life might be on this forum raises its head (when I meet someone and they mention that they're a QC fan) I panic. The odd thing is that I've posted nothing here that I wouldn't quite happily tell people in real life, but I still don't want someone stumbling across seven years worth of my posts and applying their interpretation of those posts to their opinion of me in real life. I've changed a lot since I started posting here!

So Steve and I are obviously open here about who we are in 'real' life, and I share things here that I wouldn't elsewhere, not things that would get me in trouble really, but things that are just more than people need to know.

The only time I have that panic is when I tell a story about one of my internet friends (an it comes up kind of a lot, what with all the PJ people, and the people here, all the *-cons I went too, all the IRC chats, and tiny chats, and impromptu meet ups...) If the person is not familiar with the concept of having internet friends, and asks how I could know all these people from all over the world...

Oh they are my internet friends, I met them online.

And I refuse to tell them.  There is nothing I wouldn't be comfortable owning if it came to light, but I think relationships are built on an equal sharing of information, and I am not comfortable with someone I have been on a few dates with, or a class mate having access to years of my posts here when I know nothing about them.

What a turd! That's like breaking into someone's house and saying: "Sorry for knowing how to use lock-picks." I'm twitchy about revealing much on-line. I am much more open here than in other places, and on the whole I try to keep Real Life and online life separate.

I tell people I have internet friends from a forum, but not what it's about. On Google I feel okay because both my real name and my username are not terribly unique. Only about 5 results on the first few pages of each search are actually me, and I doubt someone would be able to guess which ones. A lot of image results are things I've uploaded, but only a few actual photos of me - just things from deviantart, pinterest, and the like. This forum doesn't seem to show up unless you enter the username exactly as I have it here, and I don't use the underscore much any more, so that's nice to know.
