Either the world is going to pot or I am.  Or rather, I know that the world is going to pot, but I'm beginning to suspect that I am also approaching my sell-by date.

My thought was prompted (somewhat indirectly) by contemplating, while walking the dogs, why I enjoy work less than I did.  It's because of modern management styles that have convinced themselves that better value can be got by having less people do more work - not true.  Being on the end of such management for the past year, and for what is probably going to be the last two years of my working life is starting to piss me off (which is sad, because I actually like the manager concerned - it's just that the whole department is now permeated with this toxic approach).  I have specific large jobs to get done, and management is actively making it harder to do them.  But maybe also I'm less resilient than I used to be.

That is 100% the case in the NHS at the moment and people are going to die as a result.

Another option is "going to the dogs".  I'm not aware that "going to pot" is specifically British, though, as McGraw-Hill includes it in their Dictionary of American Idioms and Phrasal Verbs.

An attempt has been made to link the usage with the word "pot" meaning marijuana; but the phrase is centuries older, and probably refers to the fact that worn out animals end up being cooked.  ("Going to the dogs" refers to the likelihood of substandard or spoiled food being given to the dogs.)

The biggest problem I have with my workplace is that they are trying a model that is at least 16 years out of date to deal with the "clientele". (May: did they refer to "Trauma Informed Care" at all when you were over here?)

My epiphany was when the multinational I worked for decided to outsource the work of my entire department worldwide. One minute you're on the fast-track, tagged as a "high achiever", "future leader" and all that corpspeak bulldust, and the next you've been made redundant on statutory minimum terms, because a new CIO on the other side of the planet decided this was the way to boost his career...

Trauma Informed Care, no, what is that? It sounds... intriguing.

I'd quite like to be an independent midwife, to get away from some of the worst parts of the NHS bureaucracy, but there are two issues with that for me. One is that I don't believe it's right to have to pay to get good care, so I should stay in the NHS and be a good midwife who anyone can access. The other is that at the moment, it's very difficult to actually be an independent midwife in the EU, because of some new insurance laws that have really messed things up.

Hmm...my idea was to start a brewery, and I'm not crazy about the idea of buying an existing brewery. Also, even if I did do that, my student loan debt is one thing, but buying a business would be an order of magnitude above even that.

Do student loans work differently in the US? Over here you barely pay anything back.

In the US, you have to start paying back at a particular, quite immediate, point regardless of whether you can afford it. In the UK, you pay a percentage of your income over a specified point, so if you never earn anything you never pay anything back.

Probably fairer on the country, though. I really do wonder if in ten years' time there is going to be a huge black hole where all of our student loans should have come back and just haven't.

Yes, there absolutely is. We're about to reach the tipping point of non-repayment which makes the new scheme less economically feasible than the old one. Which is what people predicted at the time!

I have to start paying 9 months after I graduate regardless of what I earn, but I plan on getting a job in October and then working 6 days a week for as long as I can stomach it. I need to save up as much as possible before moving to the States so that I have a bit of a cushion, since I won't have a job there when I first move. It's worrying.

When I got my new laptop, it was because my old one didn't turn on at all under any circumstances after an unfortunate incident involving my backpack ripping and a rainstorm. That was a year ago. It's been sitting in my closet ever since because I keep forgetting to take it to the recycling center whenever I'm home. Well, just for fun I decided to see if my new laptop's charger fit it. It did. And it turns on. I'm typing on it now. The wireless antenna doesn't work (I'm on ethernet right now, it doesn't detect any kind of network adapter), the disc drive is missing after popping out when it fell, I thought it was in my closet near my laptop but I can't seem to find it. And the battery isn't being detected, so I'll probably just stick with my new one. But hey, if something horrible happens to my new laptop, I'm just a new battery and a USB wireless adapter away from a back-up.

That happened to me too! Well not quite, my old laptop was dying slowly (turned itself off randomly and would refuse to turn on more and more frequently until it just refused all together), but after it died I still kept it. I randomly tried to turn it on maybe 6 months later and it worked.

Running 'diagnostics' of a sort to see if it really is worth taking with me to college as a backup. Sound card, USB ports, SD card reader, camera, and microphone are a-go. Strange that wireless is the only thing not working (other than the missing CD drive of course). Been on for about an hour, and there's no freezing and it's not overheating.

Maybe I can get an external disc drive, leave it plugged in and connected to Ethernet at my apartment, and use it like a desktop. It has a bigger screen which would be good for long working sessions. It might be better for gaming too, I'll have to check. Batteries are expensive, so I probably won't get one unless the unthinkable happens to my current laptop. Either way I'll definitely take it though as long as it works pretty much just fine like it has been.

Also putting stuff I wish I had been able to save a year ago (pictures, documents, etc.) onto a flash drive in case this doesn't last.

You can get laptop batteries fairly cheap on ebay.

There's a new advert for TicTacs and it says something like "94% of people do the same thing day after day. So shake it up! Put TicTacs in your pockets and turn your bum into maracas! Join a queue and shout CONGA! TicTacs. Refreshingly different" and I can't help thinking that anyone who shouts CONGA in a queue of people is probably a very irritating, rude person who I would seriously dislike and suddenly I have even less desire to eat TicTacs.

There's this really handy "other thing" I'm going to write as a footnote to my abstract that I can probably explore these issues in. I think I'll call it my "dissertation."

Unless the queue is in a serious place or a place where quiet is expected...what's the harm? Seems silly at worst.
