The strong don't use shampoo, they use REAL poo.

It's OK to have dry hair during the day, but at the start and end of the day it should definitely not be dry. You know, oily to bed, oily to rise ...

I realy want to bleach my hair platinum blonde. But I have to go to a hair salon or something because my hair is very delicate and fine in terms of what I do to it.

Also my shampoo is running low. Any suggestions? (I want something that smells good)

Neko, that's what I mean - I suspect you are not alone in that, by any means. The word has been taken over by a very specific example of evangelising. My dad refers to himself as an evangelical atheist, which as you can probably imagine is rather awkward for me because it's very much an accurate description of his attitude to faith.

Apple Computer during its doldrums in the 90s fielded a Guy -- that was his first name, Guy Kawasaki, as a Mac Evangelist.

My hair is long, straight, black, and staying that way. I like Shiseido's Tsubaki ranges of shampoos and conditioners. I like their skin-care products and make-up too.

I would only understand the rather ugly usage of "evangelical" as a noun as referring specifically to "a specific subset of conservative Christians", as in "Fred is an Evangelical". Otherwise I'd simply understand evangelical as an adjective meaning "zealous in advocating something", and an evangelist as someone who displayed such zeal. Fellow Chinese-Australian cyclist Lynette Chiang was for some years the official "Customer Evangelist" for Bike Friday for example. I don't really understand the more technical Christian implications though.

I think that may be the nub of what I'm objecting to. Evangelical is not a noun. It is in adjective, and people simply miss off the noun part - the noun part being "conservative Christian" (yes, ok, conservative is ALSO an adjective, even when talking about a member of the political party by that name).

One doesn't need to be a conservative christian to be to be an evangelical christian.  It's just the most common flavour.  However, it's also common enough that it's been shortened to "evangelical".  People will noun-ify verbs and adjectives whether it makes sense or not!

The OED tells me they both descended from the Old Enligsh word léoht, which has the meanings:
 1. adj light, not heavy; slight, easy, trifling, inconsiderable; quick, agile; gentle; 2. n (-es/-) light, daylight; power of vision; luminary; world; 3. adj luminous, bright, light, clear, resplendent, renowned, beautiful.

Perhaps because light can be seen, but not touched, felt (as heat) but not weighed.  It surrounds us, and yet seems to be nothing.  My guess would be that the use as an adjective is a (very) dead metaphor.  All the adj meanings seem traits which could apply to light, and therefor ones which one might invoke by metaphorically calling something "light".  Over time frequent used of a metaphorical term like that "kills" the metaphor so that while we understand its meaning, we no longer feel the tension as it pulls against its original meaning.

The adjectives could apply to visible light, but they are much more appropriate for one than the other. Enlightened, light as point of view, and light as truth are more appropriate to visible light, and insignificant, unforceful, and not serious are more appropriate to lightweight. It's not unlikely that light as in weight was appropriated from visible light, but the adjectives have clearly been used in one particular sense more than the other.

As for hair care, you can also wean yourself off of shampoo. I used to wash my hair every other day, but that waned down to 2 or 3 times a week (and at this point, I maybe wash my hair once a week). I could probably go no-poo and just stick to conditioning my hair, but I'm not ready to make the jump yet.

For what it's worth, I have curly-ish hair so the no shampoo thing works pretty well for me. It depends on your hair type, really.

I use ~1tsp baking soda to 1cup of water for my shampoo and have for 2 years now. Just slowly pour what I need on and work into my hair. Let it sit while I wash the rest of me then rinse it out. I skip conditioner because I go all greaseball no matter what if that stuff touches my head.

I did try to go more no-shampoo, but my super short, thick, straight hair was going to have nothing to do with that business.

In a pinch I've used Dr. Bronner's peppermint soap and it did the job just fine - smells and feels amazing to boot. Might be a bit drying to use long term, though. I know they make a specific line of haircare products you could look at.

Hum hum.. I use ph-neutral soap for everything. I ´unno if that´s good or bad but I cleanes my hair and leaves my skin in an okay state. Maybe a bit dryish, but that´s due to the season, I guess.

Anyone use them styling-paste products? I use a sort of cheap one
http://www.meyrose.de/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/got2b_strand_matte_Vorderseite.jpg
but I was wondering wether an expensive one (like 20-30 bucks) would do better?
I use it because I have thin hair but it bothers me a bit and I like it floofier!

What is made out off? It is sort of a gel? I can't recall ever seeing any products around here as paste so I don't know what to compare it to.

I've learned styling wax is basically superior to all kinds of styling gels. While gels tend to make your hair hard and crispy I've found wax to be far more gentle and forgiving (correct me if anyone has found a gel that doesn't lead to crispy hair.) Great stuff, but I just use it sparingly to make my hair have more separation but I know folks who really go crazy making puffy hair.

1. I just plucked a curly, very silver hair off of my head. It's actually quite pretty and if that's what my hair will look like when I'm older, I am totally ok with that.

2. That hair, like most of the hair on the back of my head is curly. I have always had very straight hair. I don't understand what's going on with the back of my head, but it looks a hot mess.

@Fluke:

That´s the thing! The consistency is between wax and mousse, so the hair is definitley not hard as stone or glossy or anything but rather dull, fuzzy and it stays the way you mess it up and you can still touch it without it being sticky :)

Maybe take this to the Hair-Thread  :psyduck:

I used to think I had straight hair. Then when I stopped brushing it, it curled up. So, I'm getting used to the fact that my hair isn't as straight as I thought.

I almost always comb my hair after a shower while my hair is still wet and have been for years. It's only been within the past 6 months or so that I've noticed only the back does not air dry straight, it gets really wavy. (And not in a pleasant way, it looks weird.) But the front dries straight. I've had the same routine since middle school and my hair has been pretty consistent. Until now. Also when I blow dry my hair, everything is pretty consistent and no, I do not brush my hair while dying it. I comb out tangles, use the dryer until it feels mostly dry, let it cool down, and then I comb it again. (I use wide toothed combs, not the ones with teeth super close together.)

So... I don't really know what is to blame.

So... I don't really know what is to blame.

Age.  Welcome to the times of inexplicable change.

My wife's hair went from stick-straight to wavy after our first child was born.  She blames the hormones.

I grew an inch (!!) in the legs at the age of 25.  Had to get all new pants.

You never stop growing and changing, and you never know what or when it will happen.  I got my first super-long eyebrow hair the other day.  Soon, I'll probably be able to use them as shelves...

This hair talk inspired me to finally make a hair appointment. Even getting highlights. Although now I'm freaked out about how much to get cut off. I love my hair long but people tell me it looked better when it was short, about chin-length. I don't see how.

Other random thought: I keep thinking I'm really behind in college work but I'm not, I'm actually right on schedule. Even though I spent two nights playing video games and moving files to my new (used) laptop.

It's a myth, I believe, that hair grows back thicker because you removed it. As Neko says, hair changes as you get older.

I pluck my eyebrows very heavily, partly because my dad has eyebrows like that and I'm worried mine might get that way. If the ones I do leave start getting that way, I might just have to have them removed and tattooed on...

I occasionally find rough, black, curly strands in with my otherwise straight(ish) blonde hair. They're easiest to spot when they're short and along my part because they stick up all crazy, but now and then I find long ones... I really do not know what to make of it.

My wife's hair changed a little each time it grew back after a chemo. Before the first, it had been straight, but it was mostly curly afterward. I think this is common.

Yeah I've heard that your hair changes a lot with chemo treatments. A friend had several different types of treatments and lost random chunks, which then grew back randomly, resulting in a super weird texture. But I think it's all grown out and mostly back to normal now.
