Again, who says he wants to "continue the natural growth cycle"? He clearly didn't, then.

It doesn't matter how much effort someone puts into something, they don't have the right to control someone else's body against their will.

Or, he could stop being annoying as shit, stop being useless against the first gym on Yellow, and get in a goddamn pokeball like he should because YOU ARE DOMESTICATED AND SUBJUGATED AND YOU WILL DO WHAT I FUCKING SAY

I can only hope you're not a parent.

Given that I'm 24 and mid-divorce, I really hope so too.

"Ash's pikachu is just ridiculous. Who violently objects to a rare and valuable gift that'll make you bigger, stronger, a better fighter, and a Overall more valuable member of the team, especially when you know there are a lot more Overall powerful pokemon in your group? "

Well, Bulbasaur didn't want to evolve too. Maybe it's the fact that is forced to do it, or doesn't wanna change his look, or maybe it's the fact that he can keep leveling up without evolving.

You were just winding us up, really, weren't you?

Alternatively, you get a little frisson from reading over-detailed explanations of minutiae; it's OK, we understand.

Take this award for extravagant word of the day for your excellent usage of "frisson".

Someone asked me why I decided to build a .30 cal railgun with the same range and velocity as a normal rifle when I could build a 30mm hypersonic version that could take out a tank. I answered that besides the extreme cost difference between the two (~1200 bucks versus several million) the government tends to frown upon people building something that could take out a building. Still it would be cool, but I like not being in prison.

Edit: Besides the jail thing there are many, many better things I could do with several million dollars at my disposal. Shopping for new loli goth clothes in Japan comes to mind.

(Edit2: Sorry for being such a killjoy, didn't mean to..)

You feel that what I said about an electric cartoon rat was fucked up?

Speaking in a "transparent analogy", yes. Though obviously you wouldn't be a dad to any electric cartoon rats either, so on that front it'd be all good, right? After all, the response could only be applicable within the analogy, otherwise it'd be "I can only hope you're not a Pokémon Trainer".

Go ahead, read what you said within the context of my post preceding it. I'm sorry for the response since you were messing around, but it was my reaction at the time, so not gonna say it was a joke now. Reading it like that hurt.

(EDIT: Fuck you, puns. Fuck you forever. I hate you. Seriously. Now I can't stop reading it as "Trans parent". Fuck. Not intentional at all.)

Whatever offence I caused was by mistake, and I apologise for it. You've also apologised, but a stupid little voice in my head is forcing me to point out that any offence you caused me was pretty close to deliberate.

Either way, we're all better off moving onto other discussion topics.

I am new, but I do expect a higher standard of English from portions of the forum already, still proper usage of words like "frisson" needs to be properly commemorated, that others might be inspired and strive to further their own vocabulary.

Please keep in mind that some of us have other native languages, though, even if we're generally pretty good at it. When writing in the Depression thread a bit ago I spent a while just trying to figure out whether I was "laying down with X" or "lying down with X" trying to avoid looking dumb.

English isn't my mother tongue either, and while I consider my style of writing rather good, especially compared with my classmates, it tends to be quite repetitive. Once I have grown to use a specific figure of speech, I use it until I get used to a different one. But that problem isn't limited on my English writing, it applies to my German talking as well…

1. That wouldn't make you look like an idiot.

2. Most English speakers I know don't even know the correct option there.

This is indeed mentioned in my notes in the rules section; and actually, at times even the distinctions between different forms of English can become a matter of interest.  From time to time educational discussions of vocabulary, or individual words, or matters of grammar pop up just about anywhere here.

I know the feel though, I technically speak a dialect of English at this point thanks to the Marine Corps, don't believe me, go to a Marine base and listen to Marines talk to each other. The words are technically English but yesh... it's not even the acronyms of the nautical dialect we pick up that makes things hard. XD

oh, there are always going to be dialects that are bizzare, no question about it. but at least those dialects (normally) know how to spell, understand that grammar is in fact a thing that exists, and have some sort of functioning phonics system. They're also (normally) confined to a fairly small geographic area. Everywhere I've been in the US has zero understanding of or desire to have any of that. Public schools teach stuff that's just WRONG, and if i hear something like the following one more time...:

"mom, how do you spell ____?"
"just sound it out honey"
*my littlest sister proceeds to do so, then gets reprimanded for spelling something horribly wrong*

or by grandmother, a public school teacher, who is constantly finding horrible spelling/grammar errors in the school's textbooks.....

god i hate this language. >_<

Well if it helps you feel any better English is quite the bastard language. It borrows from everything and was born from a mishmash of dead languages. Not to mention it's one of the few without a supervising body that establishes definition, spelling, and pronunciation standards.

Heh, I grew up to some parts of my family mixing low-German (Plattdüütsch), which is officially a different language and not a dialect, words in their German. People who are not from northern Germany give you strange looks if you use such… I'm a little sad about never having learnt to speak Plattdüütsch properly. I can understand it, and know many of the words, but I'm rather unfamiliar with the grammer.

Plattdüütsch is interesting, as it's a little closer to English in some aspects. Example: The German word for pan is "Pfanne", the low-German word is "pann".

English may be the bastard child among languages, but that doesn't excuse people being horribly abusive and negligent towards it.

I'm not excusing it so much as giving an idea of what led to the language being so easily abused.

English may be the bastard child among languages, but that doesn't excuse people being horribly abusive and negligent towards it.

Wait, I thought English was the abuser and not the abusee?

English is in a vicious cycle of being both. Some languages need simpler alphabets, ours needs therapy.

Fun fact, until the early 1900s there was no standard spelling of ANY word in the English language.

English is a terrible mess, yes. However, American just makes a lot less sense overall than British.

I remember hearing (have not been able to verify) that the first official American dictionary intentionally butchered the language, to "differentiate" itself from European English.
