Cats and dogs were in all reality varying types of working animal for the most part. The dog being the most obvious as a herding animal in most places, and as a security or hunting animal in others. Many herding dogs also filled the security function. (See GSDs), cats meanwhile were a home aid, serving to handle vermin in all their many forms. (Your cat doesn't kill spiders JUST because it can, that's centuries of telling cats murdering spiders is good) but why were cats gods in Egypt? When a house cat was your first and last line of defense against plague bearing vermin you'd worship them too.

Of course, no one else made the connection between the plague and mice until much later.

Yes, but the mice ate the grain that kept you through the winter.  Cats were your saviour from pests, if not pestilence.

50 to 100 years from now, people will "celebrate" in oddly inappropriate ways.

Picnics, 9-11 sales, parades...

Why are our most common pets carnivores?

Plant-eaters would be cheaper to feed and safer to have around.
Carnivores don't make for good eatin'.

Would like to point out this: Despite being attacked on our own soil, and losing more lives than were lost at Pearl Harbor; in the past 12 years we've managed to not Nuke anyone.
And I distinctly remember hearing calls for Nuclear Response after 9-11.

perhaps we're more peaceable than what we're given credit for.

Chlorine bleach is a failure. Oxygen bleach works.

Despite all the chlorine bleach people have tried over the years, chlorine is still green.

I think it may have been a joke. Hair bleach bleaches hair, so chlorine bleach should bleach chlorine. But chlorine gas is still green, so the bleach didn't work.

According to Wolfram Alpha I spent exactly 11.15% off all my time since I joined, on the forums. Kinda scary.

9% for you, Celticgeek.

The forum software times you in 15-minute units, so frequent brief visits are considerably exaggerated.  This also affects the count of numbers on line - which is in effect aggregated over fifteen minutes.  Forums vary in this setting, usually between five minutes and fifteen; I think I increased it from a lower number, but I don't recall why.

There is nothing that is uninteresting*; you just haven't adjusted your mind-set yet (I had lectures at university on mixing concrete).

I hope this is the reason for my eighty days in the forum since 3rd June 2009. I only recently exceeded two posts per day, so I suppose it is either that, or I make too many long posts, and spend a lot of time composing them.

Well, some of the stuff it makes is alright, and at least it is fast. So stuff like a Latte macchiato tastes okay, but trying to drink the espresso pure, well, is not too good.

I guess when I move out I will either go to coffee shops from time to time (which is tempting as they can use lactose free milk as well), or buy a real espresso machine, which can't do much, but can do good espresso.

For a while I was living in two places and I had sets of pills in both. My anti-baby pills are labelled by the days of the week and boy did it bother me when I had to either take them on the wrong days or take them out of order. Now I am back to just one pack and it is much more relaxed.
