Random thought: You could make yourself undetectable to DNA tests by infecting yourself with a retrovirus that inserts or deletes a few of your short tandem repeats, if there is DNA evidence implicating you in a crime.

Then there's mosaicism. A friend wondered out loud over fatty food, movies and cat petting whether mosaicism contributes to autoimmune diseases.

For some reason I'm wondering how Americans pronounce 'Hannelore', since it's originally a German name (I think).

Not American but to chime in: It took me a long time to realise it wasn't spelled, "Hannerlore" but I still usually pronounce it that way.

Ha, 94ssd, I was thinking of that too. Also never post an xkcd without the alt-text.

To the red text, I just add "lore" to the end of "Hannah".

Not American, but I say it as four syllables without a thought - same as Penelope (which is indeed the name of my dog).

No, no; I meant pronouncing the final e; the accent is on the third syllable in Hannelore, not the second as in Penelope.

The first one sounds like the german pronunciation. The first a as in 'car', but a bit shorter, and both 'e's as 'eh'. Well, and the r slightly rolled if you manage that.

I just always pronounced with with two syllabus, "Hanne-lore"

EDIT - I found this from the very first Q&A dump.

Quote from: Jeph
How do you prefer to pronounce Hannelore’s name? Is it the German way rhyming with Isadora or the phonetic way rhyming with herbivore?

Rhymes with herbivore.

That would make Hann-ah-lore correct.

Woohoo! (I'd pronounce it that way even if he didn't say that, mind you, but woohoo!)

(Funny story, I pronounced Hermione with the i and the o switched, so Hermoine. I knew it was spelled Hermione, but for some reason it just seemed right to pronounce it Hermoine. I didn't stop until she put a canon pronunciation in book 4.)

A classmate in 9th grade was named Hennelore. I recall pronouncing it as Jeph does, HANN-eh-lore. But what's described as the German pronunciation, Hannah-Laura, has a more pleasant sound.

I can't believe you pay extra for cheese in Burger King. That seems dickish.

Every now and then I work out how much the stuff you get in a takeaway would cost to make at home and... the mark up's not that bad.

But on like, a sandwich? With just cheese and bacon or something in it? Fuck me.

Also, for those in the UK - I've made this joke on Twitter and Facebook already but it still applies.

Tesco Mobile are doing an advert about how their phone service is laughable, then Gina Yashere comes out of nowhere and says something and they all stop laughing. This is the most perfect casting choice ever because Gina Yashere is about as funny as a yeast infection.

"Mentat" is a title you can get for a certain number of posts?

My inner-Fallout fan has a new goal to reach.

(yes I know Mentats in the Fallout games are a Dune reference, you do not have to tell me this)

past few days I've become tired early, only to go to bed and be awake for hours.

I think I have complained about this before but I went to Burger King on the way home from a trip and spent a long time ascertaining whether the veggie burger was vegan. Once we'd determined that it was, I ordered it. It came with free cheese. :psyduck:
I'm no vegan specialist but the cheese is bad right?

As far as I know, vegans are not supposed to eat anything that came from an animal, or wear anything that came from an animal. So yes, unless it's fake cheese, they're not supposed to eat it.
