Also, definitely yes to Dora getting to be the flower girl. It's time she got back into the gang.

I haven't seen Marten make a face this adorable since he made that kitty face at Faye because he still had her Hello Kitty belt on. That said, this arc has brought forth some of the funniest facial expressions.

That's kinda creepy, Marty and Hanners.  Both have the exact same "squeeeeeeeee!" expression going on.

And damn, Marbear getting it on.  She might get teh bootycall before going back to earth.

Or Francis quits his job to live on earth with marbear. Which wouldn't be a smart move considering they've known each other for only a few days tops.
But hey, who says scientists are always reasonable?

Now we have two data points saying that makeouts in the QC universe are intense enough to cause articles of clothing to disappear. The previous was Faye's bra disappearing.

I was actually expecting that they'd be found in the lower bunk when Marten awoke, strange smiles on both their sleeping faces.

But this is good, too...

You guys all forget one basic fact:

Northampton is right in the middle of a WHOLE BUNCH of colleges, including Smif College.

He could always transfer to UMASS or MIT or somewhere reasonably close by - and they could do the geek mating dance routinely.

...and that's about as far as I'll go with that ship, thanks.

So basically the SS-ECT is 20% legitimate scientific inquiry, 50% f-ing around with technology and the pleasures of space, and 30% Love Boat style romances veiled in the cynicism of QC. Sounds fun.

Seconded ... but I don't find QC all that cynical. Irreverent, certainly. And Jeph plays at cynicism in his tweets and Tumblr but certain things he says and does and writes in the comic make me think he really does want people to "be nice to one another," which is what he says is the theme of the comic.

Then again, that could just be my impulse to assume good motives in others until they prove otherwise. I'm not sure why I still have that impulse.

When I tell friends why I enjoy a youthful web comic so much in my 70s, one of the plusses is that the characters are good to each other. They like each other and care about each other. If there's cynicism, perhaps it's expressed about others outside the group.

The cynicism seems to be more about the world, in general.

I believe the likely timeline is:

Marigold gets up and gets in the shower. (Space puke would make anyone want to shower)
Marten gets up, Marigold is in the shower. He leaves to get breakfast. (Meets Abbey)
Marigold gets out the shower and gets ready.
Francis knocks on the door. (presses the space buzzer?)
makeouts ensue.

I don't think they could have both been in the shower unless Marten is completely oblivious and would sleep through someone at the door, Marigold answering it, the sounds of makeouts and them coming into the room, stripping off and getting into the shower.

Also he'd be clever enough to notice say, a man's clothes who weren't his on the floor, and by the look of Marigold and Francis neither of them has it together enough to think to hide what they're up to.

I don't think anyone has concieved a reasonable number of babies yet.

Oh my god I just realized how horrific it'd be if Marigold got pregnant and Jeph did an arc about it oh jeez

MIT?  Uh... no.

Compared to the distance of space, a 90-95 minute jaunt down the MassPike is nothing, trust me. (Seriously: it's 100 miles, mostly via the MassPike, down I-91 and I-90 to the MIT campus. It'd be a shorter drive if he transferred to Harvard.)

There's Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, UMass, "Smif", Springfield College (down the road in Springfield), Clark University and Worcester State University (halfway between Springfield and Boston)...

Like I said: he could transfer pretty much anywhere in the state of MA and be within an hour's drive of MarBear.

One thing, though - she was wearing her YAOI ZONE t-shirt when they went "up top" for space makeouts, so if she was in the shower, it was likely by herself... unless that shirt was the only one she brought with up to the station. (EWWWWWwwww)

And he's a scientist, which means he might know how to prevent babies...

at least, in theory.

I say it's their attraction coming to a sudden head and they're sort of desperately trying to take in as much of each other as possible before they have to go back to being not meant to be. I wouldn't assume that they're horny teens. For all we know, Francis could have had tons of science-y wenches before he met marigold. Or at least one or two as these things go.  Now marigold could definitely be on the desperate side. I don't think she's had much in th way of makeouts.

Well, Francis seemed to have some idea of how these things can go. Not Sven levels of seduction certainly, but he wasn't nearly as awkward or as confused as Marigold.

You could probably say he's at least a bit out of practice, what with being on a space station with a small population (compared to a town or city) and no obvious partner in said population.

The thing about it is our perspective: we know all about Marigold - Francis doesn't. We're not giving him very much credit for managing to navigate the minefield that is Marigold's self esteem issues without knowing about them in advance, you know?

Well, if we're going to run with the "nerds have bad self-esteem and don't get any" stereotype, perhaps Francis did know in advance in a general sort of way from being around lots of science-nerds.

Somehow Marten's "eeeeEEEE" and mirror pose are a little creepy, as if Hanners' reaction was so powerful that it forced matching electrical currents in his brain by inductive coupling, like the secondary coil in a transformer.

I don't think that's a true stereotype (isn't that a contradiction in terms? whoops), nor that it necessarily applies. Marigold does have self esteem issues though, as evidenced several times in the comic, indeed the fallout from the zero G puke is an example.

And okay, perhaps playing with a DS while at a party on a space station is a bit antisocial and nerdy, but Francis didn't know anything about her personal life beyond that, which is kind of my whole point.

You do that and get back to me.

The MassPike isn't THAT bad, is it?

Would it help if his middle name was Henry?
You will be inducted into the ranks of the physics-nerds, though you might have to wait Faraday or two.

Somehow Marten's "eeeeEEEE" and mirror pose are a little creepy, as if Hanners' reaction was so powerful that it forced matching electrical currents in his brain by inductive coupling, like the secondary coil in a transformer.
Would it help if his middle name was Henry?
I see Watt you did there.

I live in central PA, but my folks live on Cape Cod.  I summer there every year.  We took the Mass pike once to avoid I-95...

We now take back roads through CT and RI.  It's quicker.

Re: the discussion further up the page, about themes of the comic and all that--

One of the only overarching themes I've noticed about the comic is that other people make your life better. All of these characters come into the strip with issues like crazy, and all of them have made positive progress due entirely to the circle of friends they've set up. QC seems, to me, like a group of imperfect people trying to make sense of the world and helping each other through life. Anyway, just my two cents.

I cannot help it. I need mho and mho, but I can amp up my sense of humor just so far. Then it becomes downright revolting.

I haven't lived among a lot of family since childhood. I try to glom on to a family when and where I can, or help create an informal one with a sense of community, and call attention to it as it's happening. As QC readers and fans, wouldn't most of us wish to be a part of this family?

Now, you KNOW that "Weber" has multiple meanings to me... especially after what happened in Smashville tonight.
