"Moob" is the sound you make as you're positioning your mouth in a kiss, going from one side to the other as you slightly "mmmmmm" into their mouth.

Or, at least, that's how I'm reading it...

Yes. When Pintsize went where no man has gone before, it was "Woob, woob, woob."

In his own words. "It wath worth it."

Also, just because we're using strange words Jeph has used here, I'd just like to say, cump.

This comic *should* come with the crackling sound of an electrical discharge. Synchronized with Station's hologram going out of focus.

I found this comic unsatisfactory.  Even as a one-off joke, it fell somewhat flat. There had to be something more interesting to focus on in the last few space strips.

It probably has something to do with the fact that while Stations computing power is substantial (in fact, I'd go as far as to assume that any computer in the QC verse that runs an AI is probably fairly powerful compared to what we have irl), it's still a conventional computer.
If AI's required a quantum computer to work, it's much more likely that the task could be computed.

I  figured Hanners made an offhand musing aboout the origin of the patterns they were watching, and station decided he would get  her the answer that she desired.

Everything's relative, and your mileage may vary.

I had a serendipitous experience with this strip: my computer was slow to load and scroll the comic, so I only saw the first two frames for about ten seconds. I was half-expecting "what's up with those two" to refer to a snuggly-cuddly Marigold and Francis.   :psyduck:

Yes... It's been a while since Hanners pulled an obsession fuelled all-nighter. This is a reversion and not especially healthy. Note that Station has given himself bags under his eyes, albeit not quite the panda-eye shadows that Hanners has.

Ya know, Marten and LT. Abbie get along really well. It's a pity we won't get to see her again after the end of this week.

While it's a funny one-off gag, I also feel unsatisfied with it. Surely, if we're stuck up in space until Friday, there was something more relevant?

Possibly. I'm not up to speed with what quantum computers can do. The tasks that they can do (integer factorization being the best known example) they do unbelievably fast (in comparison to a conventional computer). But how many tasks have been successfully ported to a quantum computer? A former student of mine has written a textbook on quantum computing. Last time I asked him, he told me that the experts couldn't agree on whether the number of (essentially different) existing quantum computer programs was two or three...

Theoretically, a quantum computer can do anything a regular one can; the problem is coming up with stuff that only quantum computers can do. And one of those things is compute large factorials in less time than the estimated remaining lifespan of the universe.

But then, since the only thing regular computers can do is add numbers very fast, that's already more than twice as awesome.

I dunno why, but I mostly laughed uncontrollably at Station's face upon scrolling down to the third panel. Partly because I expected the question to reveal Marigold and Francis sitting beside each other with frazzled hair and blushing faces, still staring at each other. Then again, it was odd of me to assume they have stopped making out.

Had Marten already gone to breakfast when yesterday's strip happened? 'Cause if they had that room to themselves...

They will be found later...

Hanners will bump into them doing the walk of shame, and end up holding a ten minute conversation with them without once picking up on it.

You are right, there is a small number of known essentially different quantum algorithms. The common buzzwords are Shor's integer factoring (which actually is a special case of the Hidden Subgroup Problem) in polynomial time and Gover's "database search" which provides a quadratic speedup for CSP problems. Here's the whole zoo: http://math.nist.gov/quantum/zoo/.

Too many people think quantum computers are magic - it currently appears they're only slightly more powerful than normal computers with a source of randomness (which is actually likely to be superfluous), that list of problems there being basically the long and the short of it.  There are things tractable with a quantum computer that probably aren't with a normal computer (although none of these is technically certain yet... albeit much in the way it's not technically certain the sun exists), but only somewhat useful to AI, not the last big step to "The Singularity" as it's often treated.

Honestly, if it weren't for this discussion, if somebody had mentioned the term "quantum computer" to me today I'd have assumed it was a made up sci-fi thing.

Hanners will bump into them doing the walk of shame, and end up holding a ten minute conversation with them without once picking up on it.

Hanners' end of the conversation is likely to consist of the word, "buh."
