One simple statement that should explain everything, especially if you've been following the news in the US:

"I work for the state of Wisconsin."

I've heard about that, but at 18 I've already moved past my youthful idealism to pessimistic cynicism, and stopped paying much attention to the political climate. Can you recap?

I based my vote for redhead on her physical resemblance to an old college friend, her personality so far is wildly different though.

    • Groovy, Kinda, a webcomic

The redhead's my favorite, but she's got the "librarian attitude" down pat. I've worked in libraries for 14 years now, and I've never seen a librarian do anything that a "Library Associate (one of my library job titles)" couldn't do with a week's training. Still, we're all just "support staff" for the librarians.
It's a real caste system.
I vote for "Roswitha." Saxon for "Strong Voice," she was also the first playwright in post Roman Europe. Plus, roses are red...

I´m not saying that it isn't a kind of lush job.. but if you can do anything anyone working at a busy academic/research library can, you ought to get a raise, my friend :)

Book-bully is wide open for an assault complaint, or perhaps a forceful and deeply-deserved elbow in the gut... Definitely interesting variations in viewpoint in the art though.

The brown girl is taking the whole thing hilariously serious - taking notes is bas enough, assaulting a fellow intern is taking it a bit far, though...

Getting people to carry out training is challenging, first you have to know what you are actually supposed to be teaching them.

Then you should have a good idea of the background level of knowledge of your students - If someone goes teach them "Math" do you jump right to calculus, or  figure out if the folks have learned the basics first?  Easiest way to lose a student is to try and teach to an inappropriate level.

And then finally, you either need a prepared plan or an earthshattering level of competance in the subject matter to actually present the material off the cuff.

Marten still doesn't know what these young ladies are supposed to be learning, although he's now got an idea of their background knowledge, and the coffee should give him a few moments to come up with a plan.  And we all love it when a plan comes together.

As somebody who regularly watches NCIS when Channel 10 in Australia can be bothered to run it, I'm actually quite okay with head-slapping. As Gibbs puts it, a slap in the face is an insult. A slap in the face is a wake-up call.

Besides which, minor physical violence seems to be a highly effective way of conveying disapproval in comic strips. :P

That's very odd. If red's a graduate student, shouldn't she be very appreciative of the value of coffee? Then again, we have tall-and-skinny demonstrating that intelligence is not a requirement for grad students.

I should note that recalls should only be used in the case of serious breaches of public faith and morality, or in cases of extreme incompetence. It was a waste of money all around, and patience and good planning for the next election cycle would have been better ways to approach the matter.

From the looks her co-interns are giving her in Panel 4, seems like the redhead just isn't wound a little tight, but has that reputation to match. Who knows: maybe she's a go-getter, focused on her career as an MLS / MLIS, and will be a challenge and contrast to our Noble Hero and Perennial Slacker.  It's not like the ONLY REASON a female character shows up is to be a love interest.

The last bit of QC Dump #39 on Tumblr -- Jeph saying "I have Plans for her" and the redhead saying "I don't like the sound of that" bodes well for the future.  :-D

It must be Wednesday if Marten is getting a friggin' coffee.

At least Notebook Intern didn't use the Silmarillion.

Redhead Intern can match her actions to the situation, which not everyone can. She fought back quickly when she thought she was in a fight, cooled off immediately when she discovered she wasn't.

Well, we know they only serve friggin' lattes on wednesdays, maybe they have other friggin' variants on other days. Or maybe he'll go to tSB - they might serve friggin' coffees all the time.

Well, we know that they only serve the friggin' LATTE's on wednesday, we don't have any confirmation on what other friggin' beverages are sold on other days, if any. Whatever day it is in the QCverse, it may be the day for a friggin' coffee, we just don't know because we've never seen anyone try to order a friggin' coffee. Yes I take this stuff way too seriously, why do you ask? (Imagine these are my face in rapid succession)  :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)

I'm surprised that Big Red didn't see the brilliance of Marten's plan; a nice chat over coffee to build some rapport and find out what they want to learn would be the obvious way to start.

I predict that after doing this whole training shtick Marten will discover that he has the skills to be a library management guru.

Oh, I don't know.  A trip to TsB does have the potential for some amusing awkwardness.  Sure, Elliot is more likely to be sympathetic than anything else, but Renee or another employee might have something to say.  Besides, between Marten's ability to misinterpret gestures and the presence of the intern trio, much hilarity could still ensue.

Intelligent people are more likely to try drugs, according to a British study IIRC.

If I wasn't military, I'd give marijuana a shot.  Safer than tobacco and similar to alcohol, minus chance of poisoning or overdosing.

Eh, debatable, I think. It depends on how they're judging intelligence.

My brother and his friend were huge potheads in college. I don't see his friend enough to comment, but there was some long-term effects on my brother, even after he quit. And that was over a decade ago.
