Well, the girl IS Sino-Australian. Give her some credit.  :-D
Are you sure you're not mistaking her for someone else?  :-)  OK, I know; we all look alike...

Someone who is Sino-Anything should know better than to make someone else lose face. Especially their boss. Emily seems more jook-sing than FOB to me.

Apparently if you don't see comics through the prism of pure hatred of a QC character, you're knighting now.

Do we need a separate hating forum to give people an outlet?

Can any of you honestly say you would not be upset if you were in Tai's position? She's in an emotionally vulnerable position. She feels embarrassed and exposed after having expressed her feelings for Dora, she is afraid Dora not only doesn't return her feelings but is amused by them. Looking for a little reassurance that she didn't make a complete fool of herself she asks Marten if he talked to Dora, obviously wanting to know if she said anything about her good or bad. Marten says he didn't even talk to her, then Emily calls him out on the lie AND makes it look as though he and Dora were talking about her behind her back and doing so in such a way that he felt the need to lie about it.  Given that this is all the information she has, it is perfectly understandable why she would have the reaction she did.

Oh no! A person didn't react completely rationally to an emotionally charged situation where they are missing important information. What a bitch.

And of course she was speaking in hyperbole here.

I can put myself in the shoes of each character in this little episode, and understand (or at least believe I understand) their actions and their reactions. Does that make me odd?

Oh, except maybe Emily, who seems to be motivated purely by a desire to be quirky.  8-)

VIVA LA BANANA SMOOTHIE!!

I like Emily since she seems to be like early Hanners, before Hanners became slightly less...socially awkward.

I may be in the minority, but I hope the drama between all the characters dies down soon. Drama is good when used in small bursts.

Emily may be mistaking a social interaction for a debugging session, which benefits from having a maximum of accurate information. Too literal. I can imagine myself doing that when I was younger and hadn't yet learned to simulate social skills.

Marten, meanwhile, is doing his usual conflict-avoidance thing, at the expense of being strictly truthful. Understandable, though in his culture that's not usually the male role. Not literal enough.

Tai, when she says "you're a terrible friend", probably means "I'm hurt and angry at this particular millisecond". Just plain not literal.

EDIT: Yeagghh! The warning that someone has posted before you is now PINK!

Words have power Marten

'..... and thus The Great Idiom Wars began in an obscure University Library in an unremarkable town on an obscure and unremarked planet in the western spiral arm of the galaxy.  The trillions to die in this protracted war would, at the end of it, hold an annual fete in which effigies of Marten The Moper and Tai The Huntress were burned in remembrance.

How fitting that the comic for QC's birthday would have exactly the sort of punchline that Jeph used to do a lot of back in the pre-500 strips. Good old days. :D

I can honestly say that I would not be upset with Marten if I was in Tai's position.  However, that's because I was a confidant and agony uncle long before I ever was in a relationship myself.  Being a confidant is second nature to me so I understand that confidences have to kept.  I would be upset with myself for getting myself into a position where my crush didn't feel able to talk to me and I would be upset with Emily for breaching a confidence (I do feel that strongly about being a confidant) but I would not be upset with Marten for not telling me.

God damn, Tai, you get all riled up over Marten's little white lie last comic, now you're whining at him to spill the details.  :psyduck:

Good on Marten, though, handled that like a champ.

And dang everyone needs to chill out, no one was all like TAI IS A BITCH, that particular word didn't get thrown around at all. People are allowed to criticize Tai when she acts like a dang brat. She is acting like she is fucking fifteen years old, here. Girl needs to show some maturity or I'd tell Dora "no, she isn't ready."

Maybe I'm just in a minority, but I think they both handled this fairly well.

Marten, for once, isn't being a pushover! Good on him~ :D

And instead of going into full-on whiny bitch mode, Tai is admitting defeat at the hands of Marten's idiom prowess. She's calmed down a good deal. So good on her, too :)

  • What's disease? Where?

There wasn't much content in the discussion between Marten and Dora as presented in two days of comics. He could have told Tai, "She's still processing it all," and that would have told her, accurately, as much as we know. We might assume they talked quite a while and that he knows a good deal more about Dora's reaction, but we don't know that. But I'm not complaining about any of the three. I'm just enjoying the story.

@DSL: {golf clap}

Marten's fundamental loyalties also run a little closer to Dora than to Tai, as is right. He coulda ducked the subject entirely, if Emily hadn't outed him, but failing that, he's just not gonna casually cross his ex. That's a classy move, in my book.

And while Tai's motivations might be a little deeper than female skinship and a girlcrush, it still remains to be seen. Dora and Marten had already had a post-breakup, I'm-not-sure-if-I'm-ready-to-date talk. Marten had his (more or less) fling with Padma, that's one thing, but Dora had more issues to work through re:relationships.

Great, now I'm overanalyzing.

I'm sure the trolley is up to carrying Tai. Books are heavy, and she is small. My copy of The Water Margin (admittedly all the Four Great Classic Novels are notorious doorstoppers) weighs over a kilo. Perching on top like that would be a  bit dicey though.

At least two:
Reading the past few comics, I'm thinking Clinton has a sister.
Oh no, I also thought that at first but that would be far too obvious.

Redheaded girl is Clinton's sister; calling it now. Compare chin, facial shape, eye color and hair color.

I was silently in the "I totally think that would be cool but Jeph wouldn't go there" camp... Yay! The sibling storylines really resonate with me.

LOTS of people called it, actually... When he first started sketching her a lot, Jeph had to clarify that she wasn't just Rule63!Clinton on his Tumblr, so sister was the next guess.

I think there are probably more fans that talked themselves back out of it because it seemed too obvious than there are fans who just never guessed. ;)
