Favorite Band/Artist?
« on: 11 Aug 2012, 21:15 »

I was just gonna post in the "Favorite Music Video" thread, but I find that 99% of the music I listen to, are just lyrics videos. :|

SOOOO, post here about your favorite band(s), artists, etc.

When it comes to bands, I've a toss up between A Day to Remember & Texas In July.

A Day to Remember. vvvv
A Shot In The Dark.

Texas In July. vvvv
Magnolia.

As for artist(s).. Eminem, hands down. From his old shit to his new shit, he's absolutely dominated hiphop for the past.. 17 years now?
This just happens to be my favorite freestyle, coming from him.
Here you go.~
Despicable.

Post away. :D

Gotta love Pink Floyd!  I'm also a big fan of Dire Straits and Steely Dan.

Woo, Isis!

My current favorites are:
Mimas - some danish dudes playing jazzy post rock
This Town Needs Guns - some brits playing sparkly math rock
HRVRD - basically if Circa Survive had decided to stick with and develop Juturna-type stuff

Since 1998, In Flames. Yes, their records have changed, but I still like every single thing they've ever done and in 22 times of seeing them, they've never let me down. I don't see this changing.

I like these threads, but I think one has to distinguish between all-time faves and music which is currently on top of things.

Alltime:
1. Primus
2. Kyuss
4. Slayer
5. Rush
4. Mekong Delta
.. and now it starts to get fuzzy for the "alltime best ever, period" notion..

Currently I'm listening a lot to:
1. Cannibal Corpse ... ahh what a lovely fluffy album the "Torture" one still is  :-D
2. Black Crippled Phoenix
3. Clutch
4. Kverlatak
5. The Contortionist ( I cannot get enough "Intrinsic" )
6. Graveyard

End of the occasional "lurker from the dark depths" post.
Have a nice day.

yeah i don´t think i have favourite bands, it depends on the time the band is having, some songs are better than others.

I like a lot of the local scene of metal so you're not gonna know any of these firsts.

1-Hermetica
2-Mastifal

and now internationals

3- Death (sound of perseverance)
4- Arch enemy
5- Kreator
6- Bathory

I too love Pink Floyd and Black sabbath but i would have to expand the music style and the list would be endless.

My top 15 songs, for the past couple years, according to Last.fm:

Pinback - Good to Sea
Sleigh Bells - Comeback Kid
Battles - Leyendecker
Iris - Annie, Would I Lie to You
Geographer - Kites
The Shins - Australia
Chevelle - Letter from a Thief
Sleigh Bells - Tell 'Em
Pinback - Blue Harvest
Pinback - Bouquet
Plumtree - Scott Pilgrim
Pinback - Soaked
Peter Murphy - Cuts You Up
Pinback - I'm a Pretty Lady
Iris - Sorrow Expert

I've been sort of obsessed with Pinback for the past several years. Usually there would be more industrial/metal/Mindless Self Indulgence here but I guess I listened to that more before I got my ipod (which is when I started with last.fm).

Top Three:
1. Nightwish, THE Symphonic metal band, up and down on their female lead vocals, but as long as Tuomas is composing and Marco's on board, I'm staying.
2. Dropkick Murphys - I drink, I wear kilts, I like punching people, fish meet water, tied with Flogging Molly
3. Amaranthe - Melodic Metal band, you could maybe call'em power metal, came out of no where and stole my heart this fall, love their stuff, but man some metal fans hate them, ah well, the old "clean vocals war" I suppose.

Bands I'm listening to a lot right now:
Imagine Dragons
Amaranthe (new album! Squeee!)
Blood Stain Child (Techno Metal.... I bought it just to be supportive of people changing the game up, but it's grown on me)
Mix of J-pop/J-rock stuff

Most of my most-played would be, uh, what I was listening to as of a few years ago, since I didn't have access to my own music library up until late last year.

1. Repo! The Genetic Opera Soundtrack - Zydrate Anatomy
2. Homestuck Soundtrack - Spider8ite!!!!!!!!
3. Diablo Swing Orchestra - D'Angelo
4. Rammstein - Du Hast
5. Rammstein - Keine Lust
6. Die Antwoord - Baby's on Fire
7. Diablo Swing Orchestra - Balrog Boogie
8. Diablo Swing Orchestra - Rag Doll Physics
9. Rammstein - Los
10. Die Antwoord - U Make a Ninja Wanna Fuck (gosh that's painful)
11. KMFDM - Megalomaniac
12. Rammstein - Seemann
13. Daft Punk - Touch It/Technologic (Alive 2007)
14. Diablo Swing Orchestra - Poetic Pitbull Revolutions
15. Die Antwoord - I Fink U Freeky
16. Rammstein - Der Meister
17. Diablo Swing Orchestra - A Rancid Romance
18. Lady Gaga - Bad Romance
19. Rammstein - Klavier
20. Diablo Swing Orchestra - Bedlam Sticks
21. Die Antwoord - Fok Julle Naaiers
22. Voltaire - When You're Evil

...the list goes on in this vein.

I kind of wish I hadn't lost my library a few times - I wonder what it would look like if it had included my Beatles, KMFDM, Iron and Wine, and Pink Floyd obsessions.

I lost my library a couple of years ago, but that was the only time - of course I'd only racked up maybe 20 gigs of music at that point, but it still sucked a lot. I am curious to see what my old favorites list would have shown as well. This is my top several according to iTunes, with Pinback taken out (they recently put out a new album and I listen to it kind of a lot)

Sleigh Bells - Comeback Kid
Badly Drawn Boy - Once Around the Block
Splashdown - Halfworld
Porno for Pyros - Pets
Florence & The Machine - Only If For a Night
Florence & The Machine - Lover to Lover
Florence & The Machine - Heartlines
Pixies - Dig for Fire
Wolf Parade - Soldier's Grin
Anberlin - Little Tyrants
Anberlin - Other Side
iamamiwhoami - Clump
Lana Del Rey - Off to the Races
The Shins - Australia
The Airborne Toxic Event - Changing
Anberlin - Someone Anyone
Anberlin - Unstable

Also I love the newish Anberlin album. And Unicorn, I am downloading Die Antwoord because of you. I've heard of them before but never listened to them.

I really, really hate the idea of any music being somehow improved or even only being any good when you're high. I listened to Pink Floyd for years and years as a teetotaller, and them being a 'drugs band' when their musical inspiration (Syd era aside) was nowhere near as drugs related as The Beatles or many other bands' was pissed me off a lot.

The first time I got stoned, I listened to 'Breathe.' I had to know. I just had to. I think it sounded if anything, a little worse to me. Maybe it was the frame of mind.

If your music sucks without drugs or is designed to take drugs to, then your music just sucks.

I dunno.  I agree that the designation of "music that's better when you're high" is pretty stupid and largely untrue, and if your music sucks without drugs, your music just sucks, but listening to music in an altered state of consciousness can also be fantastic.  Not better, as it's a totally different beast from sober-listening and comparing the two in that way is reductive and pointless, but pleasurable in its own way.

I find that when I listen to music stoned, I can't do anything else—I really focus my entire consciousness on the music and can perceive and distinguish different sounds / layers of the song more easily, but I have a harder time listening to the song as a whole comprised of those parts, if that makes any sense (probably not).  And when I listen to music on acid/shrooms/any kind of psychedelic, it's less about the sound itself than the atmosphere of the music, which completely determines my overall mood and colors my perception of my surroundings.

I'd say in general I prefer listening to music sober than listening to music with a drug in my system.  But I love music, and I like drugs, so of course I'm going to listen to music while on drugs and enjoy myself. *shrug*

Yeah.  Turns out I lack basic reading comprehension skills.  Misinterpreted the first sentence as "I really, really hate the idea of any music being somehow improved or even being any good when you're high" and thought you were arguing that listening to music when you're high sucks.
