Yeah, thinking about it more, it should have dawned on me that it wouldn't account for large numbers.

I can tell you that hormones do play a part in it, but that has more to do with your hormones during puberty than as an adult.

Would birth control have anything to do with it? (constantly adjusting hormone levels etc)

Depends on the woman. It's a common side effect though, so it could be a factor.

I have problems believing Kat's map (re Finland). For example the female students here do not look much different from their counterparts in the US (IIRC) - at least if you take wider racial diversity into account.

Hmm. A theory occurs to me. In these parts a significant fraction of women gain weight in their later years, with the predictable effect on their cup size. As our age pyramid is close to being upside down, this probably has a statistically significant effect. The same is probably true in Russia, possibly also Sweden?

Observe that countries with a low life expectancy are "downsized" in this map. I wonder what the map would look like, if they would cover women within a given age bracket only? I expect that then we would see the effects of race (via overall body size) and standard of living (that extra weight shows here also) more clearly.

Right, I know this is off topic but I am saying it anyway. Please don't use the word coed when you mean female student. It is a) incorrect and b) kind of demeaning.

Webster's dictionary puts that meaning before the one that you and I are used to, merely marking it "informal" (and not even that in the big Merriam-Webster's unabridged); so I guess we'll have to suck it up.

The New Oxford American Dictionary marks it "dated", though the American dictionaries do not.

May, I apologize. I honestly didn't know that it is a demeaning term. I did guess that it is at least partly incorrect - at least it seems to me that it is most commonly applied to/at institutions that used to be only for male students, but then later reconsidered their admittance policy.

Anyway, I edited my post. Sorry about any loss of peace of mind.

I apologise too - it was an overreaction if it is still a legitimate word in US English. But the implications of the word (that women are somehow an addition to the student body) just bother me, especially as I attend a women's college and therefore there is no co-ed about it!

I don't like the word either - but it's in common use with no stigma attached.  Of course the same is true of much other language that could be viewed as undesirable as well!

I've only ever heard it referenced to both genders, such as a coed-dorm or coed-sport. I wasn't aware US English meant it also to just refer to women?

I've seen it used to refer to female students quite a lot, and that was the context in which Skewbrow was using it. I just feel like it's reducing women to their status as "not-male", which is something I'm very touchy about!

Much of this was discussed in WCDT in early June. As I understood it, it referred to female college students as a hangover from a time when women students and women's colleges were a minority. It was certainly in use when I was a college student in the 50s/60s. It ought to become obsolete. It may hang on in print because it's a short word in a headline.

Observe that countries with a low life expectancy are "downsized" in this map.
Not really true in Asia, or indeed arguably outside Africa. Japanese and Singaporean women have the highest life expectancies in the world. South Korean women have a better life expectancy than women in the USA. Even in my homeland, female life expectancy is higher than in big-boobed Russia.

I don't know what it is about me than makes me want to test any statistical correlation anybody quotes. It may be that I am a huge nerd.

Au contraire. Is that not the way a scientific process is supposed to work. Observations. Theory. More observations refuting the theory. A new or a refined theory....

May be the Asian diet keeps women (and men) from gaining weight (and adding inches to their respective bust/waistlines)? So that in the orient the correlation between a woman's age and her cup size does not exist?

Of course, my brain is working overtime trying to salvage the bit of explaining average bra size using the distribution of the ages of the female population as a starting point (together with nutritional factoids).

Then again, it is probably not worth our while to try and come up with a comprehensive theory here.

I wonder what the average height/weight across these countries is, too. All of those red countries are known for having taller, larger (not fatter, just proportionately) people than, say, a lot of those countries in Asia. Same with Germany. And then there are a lot of people from those countries that moved to the US. (I don't know if this really applies with the northern part of South America, though.) I guess it also depends on where you store fat in your body, too. Some carry it in the upper body, some in the lower, and some carry it all over. That could explain why Africa might be lower - yes, the women are taller, but they seem to store more fat in the lower half of their bodies.

Not sure there is enough data to really say anything.
Average female height:

Also, for reference average life expectancy at birth:

A memorable article in New Yorker, IIRC, said if children get adequate nutrition at three crucial points between birth and adolescence, they tend to grow to the same heights, anywhere in the world. I haven't read it since its publication in 2004, but I'm pretty sure this is the one: http://www.newyorker.com/archive/2004/04/05/040405fa_fact

There may be something to this. Is this what Mma Precious Ramotswe calls "traditionally shaped women" (my own translation back to English, so may not be her exact words)?

I'm wearing heels today at work which means trouser socks and the stupid Lane Bryant ones don't even begin to fit me properly :(

Oh for lord's sake, you've got me thinking about this: OK, I invested in some three-packs of Jockey-brand briefs, red/blue/charcoal, and occasionally wear a deep red polo shirt very close to the color of some of the briefs. I notice it, but if there's excitement, I'd have to put it in the centitwinge range.
Thought of this again today as I was putting away laundry having dumped it on an unmade bed. The deep red underwear closely matches the sheets. Now all I need is a partner to appreciate (read: laugh at) it with me.

Unmatched socks ... Try fabric softener so they don't hide by sticking to other things, and search around any areas where you transfer laundry into or out of laundry baskets, and if you have full laundry baskets, check the entire route from the laundry machines for spills.

I just tie them together. There's also a ring with interior teeth that you can lock a pair into.

I found a stash of about 20 single socks when I moved out of the room where I was living when I first got my ferret Waffle. I knew ferrets were little bandits but I had no idea of the depth of the problem! Now my little guys just steal and hide toys all over the living room.

I save all of my single socks...I think I have some in my Sock Bag that have been missing their mate for 5+ years now. I used to keep them all in a plastic grocery bag and it annoyed me that it was such a permanent thing in such a temporary place. I bought a cute drawstring Vera Bradley bag on super cheapy clearance last year...they live there now because I couldn't figure out what else to put in it.

....I put way too much effort/thought into socks everything.

We used to have a shopping bag of single socks. When I was 6 or so, I taught my little sisters that they were saying it wrong. It was called the mitch-match bag.
