Hoooo boy, this does not relieve any concerns about racism whatsoever.

Like, the only way I can see this turning out well is if the quote of "There are times that good men must wear masks" also refers to Tonto, who in the film is shown to essentially be playing his role as the Magic Indian to be taken seriously by the other characters in the film. I don't actually trust Bruckheimer to be able to pull this off, but I'm willing to be surprised.

I only know two things about this movie:

1. Johnny Depp is Tonto.
2. There's already been one death on the set - one of the crew, a diver, had a heart attack and drowned while in a water tank used for filming.

Has any Native American group come out and said, "What the fuck" yet? I imagine it will happen some time soon

Actually, we tend to just sit back and laugh at all the "palefaces" (Please note: I don't particularly think in this manner, because I myself have been called a caucasion indian, since I'm pretty pale for a native american).  We especially thought it was funny when Phoenix had a mountain named 'Squaw Peak'.  They eventually realized what it actually meant, and changed it.

Oh, you mean Piestewa Peak?

That'd be the one.  They even changed the name of the parkway too.  My friends and I all laughed at that constantly.  And actually, in reaction to Johnny Depp playing this part, he was made an honorary Comanche.  Some of my friends were actually there, and got pics with him, and he was really nice according to all accounts.   :-D

Well, I wasn't much interested in seeing this anyway.  I'm not a fan of Depp, and Verbinski seems to "borrow" a lot of his visual style from Burton, whose visual aesthetics I quite dislike.

Is Tonto's appearance racist?  I don't know.  It's stupid and laughable, but while racism is undoubtedly stupid, not all stupidity is racist.
