Just finished getting up to speed
« on: 23 Oct 2012, 19:56 »

I found QC a while back, read the most recent (at the time) page, and forgot about it.

Then last week, I found it again...and between work, food and sleep, I've read from page 1 up to the present.

And now I only get one new page per weekday. I think I'm going through withdrawal...

On the other hand, it's better than once a week. Those godless heathens...

Any heathens in particular?

And you've found withdrawl central.  We've all been there, and find that sharing the madness with others can alleviate the DT's.

Welcome!  This is a nice place with nice people and plenty to talk about.  I haven't been here long but I already feel pretty confident about that assessment. :-D Anyway, enjoy!

Any heathens in particular?
Darwin Carmichael, Oglaf, Pulse, a few that update maybe twice a week...
Oh, and Megatokyo, which updates on the "almost never" end of the arbitrary scale.

Yah, I figured I'd congregate here awaiting the daily foodstock from Jeph.

Inside joke. Jeph (before he gave up drinking) had a little binge after the blowup from the aftermath of The Breakup (if memory serves) and renamed the entire forum after WikiLeaks - except he wanted to make it seem friendly, so he put the tag "PonyLeaks" as a joke (think MLP:FIM plus Julian Assange... you get the idea).

Things are a LOT better moderated around here now than in those days.

Only a few days ago I was thinking that maybe it was time to remove "Ponyleaks" from the forum heading.  But perhaps I won't yet, after all.

There is an explanation in my post a few down in this thread.

I see why Jeph left it in when he did, but it seems like the forum may have moved on past that kind of nostalgia.

Also, how many posts do I need before I can alter the "NURR" title under my username? Not even sure what it means...

They're 'titles' (for lack of a better term) based on post count, but don't mean anything other than that, besides being entertaining and silly.  :-D I think at five posts you become "Not quite a lurker," and at twenty-five you become "Plantmonster."

EDIT - Ok, so I think you knew what they were, just not what "NURR" meant.  Pretty sure that's just a reference to the noise Raven makes when she's confused.

The "schedule" is located on the QC wiki. You might prefer to be surprised by what shows up under your user name.

Anyway, it's here:

See that's the problem...I can't just jump into a series, I've always started things at the beginning. And if I start DW at the beginning...well, it'll take a while. I had to read QC from the beginning, I couldn't jump in at the pool party...and it took me just over a week to get up to speed...but TV shows flow at the pace of their own runtime, not my reading speed. @[email protected] I have a family to worry about. If I get sucked into the metaphorical Tardis of trying to catch up on DW, it'll be like I vanished off the face of the earth.(...That's the punchline)

Actually, that would be my problem as well. I mean, the series began before I was BORN.

(Then again, so was Star Trek, but there weren't as many episodes of ST:TOS.)

We're taling about the TV series, right? Not the ridiculous movie with Lily Collins and Julia Roberts...
Still, that would mean you're 17...who's the whippersnapper now? ^.^;; Besides, I'm more of a privateer.

Balrogs have wings?

Indeed yes, Balrogs have wings. I like to think that Rakdos the Defiler was the runt of the litter, based upon size and power...and I'm showing my ubernerd side now. Nicely done, you got me monologuing.

who's the whippersnapper now?

Both of you; I watched the first episode of Dr Who in my late teens.  The first episode of Star Trek was broadcast in the UK two weeks before I was first married (we watched pretty much all of the original series together; but we preferred Dr Who in the end).

I once spent quarter of a Computing class explaining the Picard Maneuver. I was called a nerd, even though the previous quarter of the lesson was an argument about whether Star Trek or Star Wars made more sense.

In other news, I cannot spell quarter correctly the first time I type it, even if I did in the previous sentence.

Owww...alright, I submit. Do I get any partial credit for knowing who the Doctor and the Captains even are? Most folks my age say they think I'm into gergorian chamber music too, with the programming I immerse myself into.

It's because any half-wit can argue SW vs. ST...but only a true nerd can delve into the nitty-gritty minutiae..."nerd-bros, represent?"

Most folks my age say they think I'm into gergorian chamber music too, with the programming I immerse myself into.

The first recording on this page (of selected surround recordings I have made) is of some music by St Hildegard of Bingen, a twelfth-century composer, who was made a saint earlier this month.

Call me uncivilized, but I haven't any software to play any of those tracks. Any mp3 or uncompressed wave format available?

Yeah, you'll definitely call me uncivilized when I tell you that I have never, nor have I any desire to use or own anything from Apple Corporation. Sorry, just personal preference.

EDIT: Apparently my PC knows what a DTS file is...I'm honestly surprised. Of course, it's a computer from work, and aside from Ubuntu as a secondary OS, I have no idea what nifty little Easter Eggs they crammed in here.

VLC is a cross-platform open-source media player.  It can play the DTS file as surround if your computer is set up for it.

Whoa there, we're not that old...I grew up after the dawn of the Compact Disc, if that helps any.
My wife and I were friends with a man who owned a string of record shops in southeastern Michigan. We hiked in NH in the 80s, and 3-4 times, we'd drive on to Maine and stay with the owner and his family at their summer place. Once, during a visit, he described an event at a convention of record store owners he'd attended in Nashville a few weeks earlier. Someone on stage took this little shiny thing and put it in a machine. Beautiful music came out. He ejected the disk, threw it down to the floor, stomped on it, put it back in the machine. Beautiful music came out. My friend was properly impressed.
That was my memory of the dawn of the compact disk. As I recall, he and his wife were both smokers. In a decade, both were dead. In another decade, the chain was gone.
