Cold Days by Jim Butcher, of the Dresden Files series. Reading it for a review.

As such, I choose not to comment on positives and negatives at this stage

Is that the next in the series?!  I keep continually rereading that series, and wishing they'd made the tv series much more accurate.  I like the tv series, but it could have been so much better.

A Series of Unfortunate Events.
Good guess, but no.

Haven't gotten around to reading that yet, so no.

It's a TV series that is no longer airing new episodes.

I posted that thing about the book in the completely wrong thread. Fucking hell.

This forum really has changed, since back in the day I'd already have been torn to shreds for that.

A brave man travels with his friends to a foreign country, seeking to settle a political dispute.

Daammn, the possible definitions of "political dispute" leave this one wide open. :P

Pocahontas?
Avatar?
Ooh! Is it Thor?

And because I don't think we have enough unanswered ones on this page yet:

An up-and-coming indie rock band tries everything to get recognized by a major producer, even going so far as to murder the rival bands on-stage, but everything gets shot to hell when the bassist, who has his own personal agenda, murders the producer as well.
