QC: The Crowd-Sourced Guest Strip Edition
« on: 01 Nov 2012, 05:38 »

I'd been toying with the idea of a "guest strip" (or two) that would be done basically by the people of the forums as a whole.

It's not like we don't have the talent - the 86 versions of the Caption Contest suggest we have enough in the way of snark and savagery that we could come up with dialogue for our beloved characters; and we have some people who have posted to the fanart thread who could do some of the sketching/drawing.

And, of course, there's "QC: Behind The Scenes" - but that's something COMPLETELY different.

So I'll put this out there as our fearless leader is recuperating: Could we put together a strip or two of QC?

Absolutely. There's enough snark and wit to come up with a basic outline for a comic, and the required artistic talent to render a visual version. Let's get some volunteers, split into two groups: Content and Artwork. If you have talent in both areas, join both. There's no reason why you couldn't.

Not to dissent, but

a) as one of the most popular webcomic artists out there he has no problem getting guest strips,

2) would he really want something from his loathed forums?  Maybe as an apology for the past, but I don't see him using it,  and

iii) we are the proverbial herd of cats.  You're not going to get agreement on jack, and certainly not in a reasonable timeframe.

That being said, I wouldn't mind giving it a go and bring proven wrong...

Neat idea.

I propose we do a guest strip of Faye finally snapping and murdering everyone.   Oh wait that would have been funny yesterday.

Hmmm.   See coming up with an initial idea is the hard part this is why I don't do my own creative-thing.

This, I can work on the "Content" section. Artwork... not so much. But I love writing/ editing scripts.

And on the subject of agreeing, we could have multiple people make filler comics and then vote which ones we want to submit.

I'll try to help with both :-) I've clocked more hours sketching than I can shake a stick at (Woohoo! I found an excuse to use that phrase!). It could be really fun to see a mashup of artistic styles in one strip. I'll help to bounce some ideas around for content, but I'm a much better editor than I am writer.

Throwing out an idea:

We could do something revolving around the cast if they ever found parts of these forums. Like Marigold going on a Wikia Editing Binge, or Dora (or Faye?) doing captions, or Marten trying to discuss alt-lifestyles - or something to that effect.

And a punchline could be Hannelore reading every. Single. Post. On the FORUMS.

First panel: Hannelore asks a seated Marigold (at CoD) what she's looking at. Marigold says it's some weird forum where they talk about a webcomic.

Second panel: Dora looks over her shoulder and says something about the captions, and Marigold does something with the Wiki.

Third panel: Faye is looking over Dora's shoulder - "No, no, that's not funny enough." She ends up coming up with about three captions (we could go meta and use the "I'm his friend" panel from Gabby's snide comments in 2249).

Fourth panel: Marten, shown the forums by Faye, reads the BAND subforum and gets into a discussion with Patrick about guitars - and sees that Hannelore is logged in as the "latest member." "What - she's already got 1,000 posts? What's she doing?"

Last panel: Hannelore, red-eyed and frazzled - "Must. Read. All. Posts."

Someone wanna flesh that out a bit and get some sketches together?

Okay, who wants to work on some of the exact scripting?

And anyone wanna tackle some rough sketching?

EDIT: some "guide" strips:

1895 for the first panel; 1618 for the second and third; the "updated" version of 51 from QCV1 for the fourth, and a variant on 2162 for the last.

I'll do the dialog for the first one.

(Hanners has been sweeping the floor, she is holding a broom.   She is looking over Marigold's shoulder)

MARIGOLD:   *looking annoyed*

HANNERS:  I'm sorry,  I was just wondering what you are reading that's all.

Marigold:   Just reading the  discussion forums for my favorite webcomic  Controversial Furnishings.

Second Panel (And I'm veering off script a little here)

Dora: *Looking at her own computer* You know Marigold, I like the comic and all but it is eerily similar to something... I just can't quite put my finger on it...

Marigold: *Ignoring her while typing heatedly* NO! Tannelor is the shy, nervous daughter of the PRESIDENT, not a billionaire philanthropist! And nothing suggests that she has any romantic interest in that dweeb Marven!

Anyone remember which Caption "Contest" thread had the "We're friends" panel in it? We could use those comments in panel three.

I'll be honest, I don't really like it.  Aside from the in-jokes, it's... too busy.  To get these, you'll need screen shots (for the caption game) in addition to the characters interacting with the forum and each other.  We need a one-off, not an arc!

I think the answer is to stick to a main joke, and keep it simple.  I submit, for your considerations, the following changes;

Keep panel 1 and 2 as is (well, a little editing is probably in order.  Later.)

Scrap the caption contest thing in 3.  Instead, have Marten looking over Dora's shoulder, saying "Hey, I've seen that one.  It's that slice-of-life comic about a guy and his anthro PC".

Dora: "Yeah, but the forums - they're a real piece of work!  These people take it WAYYY too seriously!"

Across the counter, Mari (or both Mari and Marten, or all three) recognizes Hanners, who disappeared after panel 1.  The line  "How can she already have over 1,000 posts? She just registered!" works well with the joke reveal in the 4th panel of the frazzled Hanners.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Some minor edits; make the title "Controversial Ingredients" (better match with "Content")
Cut "off-planet" in panel 2, and spell it "Marven".
Exactly. Keep it simple and tighten the dialog; today's guest strip does wonderfully well in that regard. (Also note the attention to character traits in the guest strip; if anyone would be passive and blase about ... that ... it would be our skinny indie TEH hero.)
So: Panel 1.
INT CoD. Hanners with broom, Marigold seated at table hunched over netbook. Hanners is peering wide-eyed over Marigold's shoulder, Marigold is hunched over netbook, looking annoyed at interruption/intrusion.
HANNERS: Whatcha readin'?
MARIGOLD: It's just ... it's just my favorite webcomic, "Sketchy Stuff."*
*Sorry. I like puns and punchy dialog.
And Carl-E's idea for the different wording in panel three works a LOT better.
An interesting idea might be to set the comic they're reading in a universe WITHOUT robots and private space stations and such. As in, our universe. Although, that's getting awfully close to fourth-wall breakage.
Nono, that's the sixth wall when the comic characters start reading about real life in a meta-comic.
 (the fifth wall is She-Hulk's and Deadpool's common power that doesn't actually exist probably)
Alright, edits made...
See, this is what I like about the crowd-sourcing. We get to collectively make a funny comic.
And Carl-E's idea for the different wording in panel three works a LOT better.
I have to agree, we also have to remember (in addition to getting the personalities right) that the comic has to flow, and while non-sequesters might be funny, all of the funny is combined to each panel separately. I don't think we're all humorous enough to make a single panel funny, so we should build to the final punchline (That Hanners panel).
FIRST PANEL
[HANNELORE is holding a broom, looking over MARIGOLD's shoulder; MARIGOLD is typing away on her netbook]
HANNELORE: "Whatcha reading?"
MARIGOLD (looking slightly annoyed at the interruption): "It's just… just my favorite webcomic, Controversial Stuff."
SECOND PANEL
[DORA is standing by the front register, looking at her own laptop, while FAYE (or RAVEN?) is looking off-screen at MARIGOLD]
DORA: "You know, I like the comic and all, but it seems strangely familiar. Can't quite put my finger on it."
MARIGOLD (off-screen speech bubble): "NO! Tannelor is the shy, nervous daughter of the PRESIDENT, not a billionaire philanthropist! (clicking noises as she's typing) And there is NOTHING to suggest she has any romantic interest in that dweeb Marven!"
<-- NOTE: We could come up with our own "SPECIALS" on the board behind Dora here. Just saying. -->
THIRD PANEL
[MARTEN is looking at the webcomic on HIS laptop, back at his apartment, as FAYE looks on over his shoulder]
MARTEN: "Oh, yeah, that's the slice-of-life comic about a guy and his pet tarantula."
FAYE: "Yeah, but the forums – they're a real piece of work. These people take it WAYYY too seriously!"
FOURTH PANEL
Frame One
[Back at COD; DORA is looking around as MARIGOLD is closing up her netbook]
DORA: "Where did Hannelore go?"
MARIGOLD: "She was just here a minute ago. I was showing her the discussion threads in the comic's forum."
Frame Two
[Back at MARTEN and FAYE's apartment; they're still looking at his laptop]
MARTEN: "Hey, it looks like Hannelore registered to post on here."
FAYE (looking down): "But that's crazy! How can she already have over a thousand posts?"
FIFTH PANEL
[HANNELORE is sitting in front of her computer, eyes bloodshot, hair unkempt]
HANNELORE (whispering to herself): "Must. Read. All. Posts."
MARTEN: "Oh, yeah, that's the slice-of-life comic about a guy and his pet tarantula."
FAYE: "Yeah, but the forums – they're a real piece of work. These people take it WAYYY too seriously!"
I'd suggest a change here - it doesn't quite flow realistically from the previous panels. Perhaps:
MARTEN: "Dora just sent me a link to this slice-of-life comic about a guy and his pet tarantula."
FAYE: "Yeah, me too. Have you seen the forums? These people take the internet WAY too seriously!"
Oh, and in homage to another of my favourite webcomic artists, I'd change Hannelore's line to "Read ALL the posts!".
Considering why we're doing this, I don't think I'm a fan of that last special.
I could see the "Free Holopony" thing as a note taped to the cash register. The rest as Specials - DEFINITELY!
Updated script is now here: http://www.scribd.com/doc/111955251/QC-Crowdsourcing
Should it be Faye or someone else - Raven? - in that second panel?
RE: banana smoothies
Watch the first few minutes of Live at the Apollo (Season 7 Episode 4) - "Buy a banana, take a bite and go wmwmwmwmw*shakes head vigourously*mwmwmwmwm. You wil have save yourself £2.29."
It's funnier when Andy Parsons does it.
Considering Faye's back at the apartment with Marten in the 3rd panel, it should be Raven or Penelope.
Agreed.
Storyboard sounds humorously complete. Is there an artistic hand in the house? A rough visual blueprint?
There needs to be at least a Yelling Bird, Sweet Tits, Randy, Shelby, or Shame Orb reference. At least a YB somewhere.
Maybe if we make another one, but I think this fan comic is pretty much finalized and it's busy as-is.
You know, I'm not sure we need Frame Two of panel four - we could put frame five into its place and not lose a great deal of impact, and also make the strip shorter. Any thoughts?
