Finally took the plunge...
« on: 04 Nov 2012, 09:53 »

So I have been reading QC for 5 years now.   And lurking on the forum for almost that long.  I finally registered so I could wish Jeph well with his current troubles.  And now that I am here, I figured I might as well stick around, though it will be strange to actually interact with people whose conversations I've been reading for years... that last part sounded way less creepy in my head.

So hello to everyone!

Figured I should actually tell y'all a little about myself in my introductory thread!  Food for conversation, and all that.  So:

I'm in my mid-20's.  I'm from the Midwest, but where I'm currently living/working depends on the needs of my employer.  I enjoy sports (especially basketball, tennis, and skiing), but spend the majority of my free time with either my nose in a book or embedded in whatever video game I feel like at the moment.  Lately, that's mostly been Skyrim, and the writings of Winston Churchill (recently got a near complete set of his writings at a yard sale, hadn't even known he was such a prolific writer prior to that).

Whereabouts in the midwest?  I'm an ex-buckeye, and reformed hoosier.

Middle of nowhere, NW Wisconsin.  I'm currently living in TX.  I miss trees and grass and other things that aren't some shade of brown/grey.

Bonjour!

Enjoy the Lone Star State while it isn't being ravaged by one of the many forces of Nature that seem to dislike it.
Yeah, I got nothin' else for now.

Thanks Bluesummers.  I'll just be happy when what passes for winter down here finally arrives - highs in the mid-80's in november are just plain wrong.  And it's still a mystery to me how people survived here before the advent of air conditioning.

Geez, you're from even further north than ME?

Welcome!

And yeah, heat in the south sucks. I used to live in Florida and I missed snow so much. But hey, no slipping on ice and breaking your back

If it means getting stuck in it five times on your way home from work?

NO.

Same here. I get paid on commission, and I travel for work. Snow = no money.

Welcome, not-exactly-new person!

Wallace Stegner said the West is beautiful once you forget the concept of green and learn to savor the subtleties of shades of red and brown.

Churchill is a fascinating blend of insight and of being stuck in the Victorian age, isn't he? Have you read the touching short essay where he has an imaginary conversation with his dead father about the trajectory of the Empire after his father's time?
