Grand Theft Auto V
« on: 14 Nov 2012, 13:00 »

So I'm sure someone's going to be excited about this game. Personally I'm tired of Rockstar in general and I'm quite bothered by the fact that despite having 3 playable characters, they couldn't be bothered to make a single one of them female. On the other hand, people love this series and here is the 2nd trailer.

Haven't watched that yet, but I will admit that I would expect them to get on board with a female playable character.  Especially in light of having 3 options.

Meh, not really surprised either, but somewhat disappointed.

Are they all going to be playable in V, or is it going to be a one game/two DLC thing like the IV trilogy, with each game having one of those characters?

All playable and you can switch between them at supposedly any time you want, instantly. They all have their own thing they're doing when you're not controlling them.

Essentially. It sounds like a neat mechanic, but ehhhhhhh.

On that note, I just realized I have Vice City in my Steam library. I have no idea when I purchased it, but I am going to play some 80's Mobster comedy.

Vice City was so much fun. San Andreas was more fun only for the fact of trying to do some of the stunts on a bicycle was insanely fun for me.

I might be the only one with this opinion, but I never liked any of the the GTAs. They always seemed so repetitive after a while.

I like the idea of having three playable characters palling around, instead of playing as one person, rotating between all of his friends for missions. GTA games always got a bit monotonous for me, as I kind of zoned out and did my best to get rid of all of the mission markers on my map.

My problem with this logic is that it kinda seems like that change might be arbitrary. This isn't an RPG where character attributes significantly impact how players can interact with the world and the people in it (unless I missed something big) so the biggest potential differences (if the mechanics change at all) between the three that I can see are speed and strength (stronger-but-slower and weaker-but-faster for example), and maybe some missions that are only available to one them. That doesn't really sound all that exciting, and it also seems like a kind of faux-innovation, a new central mechanic that in reality is just a gimmick to avoid being called out on repetitive game design. There's obviously a solid chance I'm misjudging this, but at this point it seems like having three characters to swap between is just Rockstar making a couple additional character skins and trying to pass it off as something far more.

I'd be most excited if it was just a story thing. Like I said, I get tired of driving my one guy to the mob boss' house, watching a cutscene, then doing a fetch quest over and over. At least this way, my 3 playable characters can interact with each other, and it kills the monotony of the "drive here, watch cutscene, get mission, return." It's not a huge innovation, just something that could keep the game fresh.

The first gameplay trailer has been released. I'm a bit more interested now that I was planning. The driving still looks like ass, but it at least looks better than previous games. I never have understood how the driving could be one of the worst control schemes in a franchise called Grand Theft Auto.

I'm also curious, does anyone here actually care about the online aspect of this game? I can't really trust my own opinion on this considering how little interest I have in online gaming period.

See, if they play the multiplayer angle right, I reckon you should be able to steal from any heists that might be going on. Or have teams doing defend and steal. THAT would be epic.

See, I saw the gameplay video tonight and thought, "I HAVE TO MAKE A POST ABOUT THIS!!" So I'll just write Ninja'd!

Love Rockstar lots. Love it more now. I'm seeing some Max Payne 3 in that shooting sequence, which is awesome because shooting in Max Payne was slick. Love the lighting in the drive at night scene. Also, the way the car handled looked significantly different to GTA IV, color me interested.

Regarding Multiplayer, when I played GTA IV, I had a tight group of players going on, and we'd create a server with RPGs only and no friendly fire. We'd shoot each others, which didn't cause damage, but flailed us around the map. Hilarity ensued all the time.

The general rule of thumb concerning multiplayer is: If you have good people to play it with, it will be fun no matter what. Another rule of thumb concerning multiplayer is: Don't play L4D with AI players.

I wonder what happens when you switch characters while you have a wanted level. Is there a chance that one of your characters could get busted while you're not playing him?

Well judging from the gameplay video, switching characters can force you into a wanted level. It'd be only fair if you could switch out of one as well.

Although I hope the map won't be TOO big. I know it's hard to believe that "too big" exists, but I have no interest in spending an hour just getting from point A to point B.

Pre-ordered it, btw. Game coming in the 17th of September, which gives me a week to finish it before classes start again :D
