I don't play GTA Online for the same reason I don't play most games online (aside from the occasional MMO). I just don't like playing multiplayer when I can't see the person I'm playing with/against.

Really? I don't play on online because in the past decade and a half online gaming has gone from a relatively gentlemanly pursuit to something anybody can do and as such is crammed to the gills with the worst people on Earth, who have the perfect combination of anonymity, an audience and lack of accountability.

Yeah, my headset stays off on GTA V (and most others) unless I'm in a party with friends because of the vitriol and internet muscles.  It's pretty horrible.

That, and this - your statement reminded me of it immediately.

I have to disagree with Mr. Gabriel. They aren't normal people, the anonymity only magnifies the asshole behavior that is central to their being.

Not only do I not even own a headset, but I also preemptively mute everyone. Because experience dictates that only on an extremely rare occasion will someone using a headset to communicate be anything other than a teenager being a homophobe.

Ah, Penny Arcade. I was such a fan of their work until I discovered they were basically rape apologists.

A lot of their work is incredibly funny, and parts of it have even influenced my every day speech (I've lost count of how many times I've ended an anecdote with 'then he called me a pissant and hung up'). I was an avid reader of their comic for well over a decade, and some days I do miss it. But we aren't talking about a dead musician who turned out to be cruel in his personal life after already becoming critically respected. We're talking about living, still-active guys who have invested their money in covering up occurrences of sexual assault at their conventions.

Okay, that's a new one on me.  When did that happen?  And to be clear (because the internet can be unclear) I'm asking with genuine curiosity and not skepticism.

I think a Google of "PAX Controversy" will probably give you more than enough material, from various different years.

Off the top of my head is the "Dickwolves" controversy which;

For sure, Mike has been pretty open about how he realises he does some stupid shit sometimes and always comes out to explain it. My issue is that it just seems to like, keep happening.

But this is getting to be less and less about GTAV ;)

I'm waiting to find out why exactly I should want to pick it up on next gen consoles at the moment. A graphical upgrade isn't really enough for me.

When/if I buy a PS4, I'll probably get GTA V for it.

Thanks for all the PA info.  I'll be reading up on it.  And to attempt to stay on topic, I'll be getting GTAV for ps4, literally because Sony confirmed that you'll be able to transfer your 360 character if you want to.

I still have yet to see a game that makes me want to get a next-gen console, and a souped-up GTA V isn't really that convincing.

Understandable 94ssd, I've known I eventually wanted a PS4 anyway, and since I'd be able to have the same character I've already been playing and not have to restart just because it's a new console, makes it appealing to me.  It certainly isn't the REASON I want a PS4, just a contributing factor.

I sort of want to "buy" $100,000 instead of playing for hours to be able to get this house. But I feel like I'd not only have wasted $3 but also betrayed my principles - I HATE microtransactions in gaming and so far have avoided indulging in it.

I hate that in-game prices are so jacked up that it almost forces you to buy money in order to access higher-level content.

I'm not sure what level you are, or what missions are open to you, but $100,000 shouldn't take hours.  If you do the Survivals, they're worth $30,000 each, and only take about 10 minutes each.  If you get invites to Rooftop Rumble, they're worth the effort at just over $18,000 for about 3-4 minutes depending on the crew you run it with.  You do have to grind for cash in this game for sure, but $100,000 is fairly easily obtained.  Now a million, yeah, that's trying.  Which is what I'm working toward now.

Not getting a PS4 for a while, but I just might get GTA V again. Especially since my PS3 disc is kind of messed up and won't play.

I just had a random thought that, in the future, analyzing the things that are satirized and criticized in GTA games will be really useful for getting an idea of what was considered important in the year they were released.

I'm thinking specifically about GTA IV, where there's a lot of talk about patriotism and terrorism, vs. GTA V where there's a lot of content having to do with data mining, leakers, and the recession.

It's an interesting idea, but if I recall correctly (and I could be wrong) GTA: San Andreas was supposed to be indicative of typical 90's California gangsters movies and the like.

And Vice City? Just a love letter to Scarface and Miami Vice, nothing deeper.

VC had the best music of all the GTA games, but San Andreas had the best radio DJ segments.
