I was about to say that a paperless society is about as likely as a paperless toilet, but I just found out that the latter has been invented in Japan, so who knows.

Jumping spiders: pretty cute, unless they are the size of a small car, sentient, machine gun and mortar equipped, and prone to philosophizing.

Naw, even then they're pretty damn adorable.

Awww, thanks!

That would also be my reaction to a cartoonish giant spider being reassuring to me.  A realistic giant spider, on the other hand...probably a muffled "thank you" from me curled in the fetal position on the far side of the room.

Is that a tarantula?

Already been kinda mentioned, but that looks more like a jumping spider to me. And yeah, my initial reaction would been  :-o at the unexpectedness of seeing an ArachnoPC. Then once I recovered I'd be like "Cool!"

No doubt arachnophobic people would run screaming out of that office at that point.

Pintsize's comment has me wondering: If an AnthroPC can "rewrite memories" like that, does that make them unreliable in criminal cases? Or are they easily hackable? What would stop someone from using one as a trojan horse into secret facilities or use in a crime?

I don't think he meant it literally. It might've just been the robot version of "that's how I remember it" or "that's what I was told". It's "headcanon" which isn't exactly like "hardcoding". ... See what I did there?

If they COULD ... I guess using a non-sentient programmed robot as an accomplice would be much less complicated.
And easily hackable... isn't that what humans already are? :D

Thanks, but no.  Much as live spiders don't phase me (thanks to marrying a pet shop owner), I think that any normally small critter now the size of a small dog and robotic that suddenly drops down from the ceiling and talks, might get a similar response to Marty's.

Or the generous application of a baseball bat.

Invented? Paperless toilets have been in use for centuries...

Jeph, unlike Masamune Shirow with the tachikoma, gave his creation the correct number of legs for a spider. I wonder if the shock of being ambushed by a robo-spider is the real test, and the questionnaire is just a distraction.

I had that thought... but what would that prove as far a social qualifications go? That you can cope with your assigned anthro-PC looking like a salticidae?

I think its just a case where robots/droids/etc just wouldnt get the human reaction.

And yeah spiders are no insects, since insects have 6 legs and spiders have 8 ... but meh, I still call them "insects" all the time.

I'm curious as to whether non-standard/animal-style chassis are available for companion AnthroPCs.  It doesn't seem to be that much of a stretch, considering that we've already seen a sentient toaster (not to mention that Winslow's chassis barely qualifies as humanoid either).

I would be (and am) terrified of a corgi size robot spider, regardless of its colour scheme or comforting words.

Although I've always associated Portal turrets with spiders, or maybe some kind of crab, for no real reason and they're pretty fun.
