2012 - Moment of the Year?
« on: 25 Dec 2012, 18:59 »

The question for our denizens of PonyLeaks: What was your nominee for the "Moment Of The Year"?

Our basic guidelines:
  • Regular Strips between numbers 2091-2347
  • Separate nominations for best YB strip
  • 2316 doesn't count (it's in a completely separate category)
  • Please give a reason for your nomination - i.e., major turning point, massive teh funny, great writing/drawing.

And with that: BEGIN!

I would pick something from the space arc. As it was to a great extent about Hannelore's back story, I go with the B-day hug. Also a nice strip and story-telling. Bringing the crowd to verge of tears (lookit Dr Case), but also completed with Jeph's quality comic relief moment.

I'm not clear on the dates, but if it was this year, then I nominate as the unquestionable best strip Momo and the UN panel on AI rights speech.  Made me want to stand up and cheer.  (Though Marigold could have used a more comprehensible line in the last panel, to make the strip more shareable.)

I vote for 2323, because it, together with the discussion it generated on this board, has changed my view on life in a meaningful way.

I hereforth formally and duly nominate the right honourable Questionable Content Comic Strip Number Two Thousand One Hundred Sixty Three, primarily on the grounds of SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE, but also in recognition of Marigold's development as a character. Jolly well done.

All right, here's what I've got for my personal choices - and the ones already mentioned.

I'm going to put a "wild card" option in a new poll, and run it into the new year.

2143: The Undocumented Bug
2146: Applause Discouraged
2163: Moob
2198: Concise Explanation
2210: Everything Looks Like A Nail
2227: Aww Yeah
2246: Tai Goes Hard
2307: At least he didn't say "Dang"
2323: Willingly Ignorant
2335: Gordon Loves His Job
2340: First Impressions

2227 does it for me; thanks, Dr. Bear.

Not strictly because Tai told Dora she was crazy about her; more because of Tai's pep talk leading up to that.

Drat, if my first choice is that old I'd have to scour the archives to figure out what my actual favorite is, so I'll take the one I like best ouf of the poll options ("my head...please....get it off").

Also it just re-dawned on me how ironic a name "Willfully ignorant" is for the strip in which Claire outs herself.  (Which I would neg-vote if I could, because I still think it was a strip in which nothing else happened and it doesn't deserve to be praised solely on the basis of its Afterschool Special message.  This is a comic, so be funny or pretty or touching first, and *then* preach about equality and acceptance, without making that the sum total of the strip's content for an entire GD day.)

Didn't you read the last frame of that one?

There was a punchline.  It was about slurping noises.  I'm pretty sure that was what the title referred to, as well.

Don't recall being preached at in that strip, either. Seemed more like cool acceptance, then punchline. Now that I think about it, my favorite strip from the options given is WAY more preachy ("Don't you realize how awesome you are?") than the slurping-avoidance one. Well-done nonetheless.

My top three of the ones mentioned in the poll:

1. 2323, which I found very touching, both with respect to Claire trusting Marten and Marten's acceptance (although it seems he's had to switch gears, because it's only after his "slurping noises" comment that they discuss the matter further (in the next strip))
2. 2340. DONK!
3. 2163. SQUEEE!

I'm finding it hard to pick one so I'll list my contenders:

2243 for Marten maintaining a confidence
2246 for Thai to combine courage and wisdom into pure awesome
2251 for Marten defending Momo and because we get to see Momo's evil side
2284 as it tells us more about how AI society is constructed

My official vote was for #2146 (seeing Hanners give her dad a hug without triggering off a massive panic attack was one of the best D'awww moments), but I would have voted for comics #2132-2133 (Lt Potter putting Station in his place, then getting drunk after knocking back almost $5 million). This is what won it for me.

STEAMPUNK GOD DAMN IT

edit to include a reason:

It was so far out of left field but really well worked out I think.  Mar's dad seems like an awesome character and the comic was in my opinion the most enjoyable of the year.  Much credit to Jeph for that one (2198).

I second this vote.  That was a very good strip.

Also this made me LOL IRL just now.  Don't recall whether it got me as good when it first went up, but Emily's OH NOES face in the last panel is just hilarious.

Yeah I loved the Steampunk one actually. I don't think I could pick a favourite strip because they are all so interdependent, but that one stands alone as being funny.

Do you mean 2353?

If so, that's kinda a stretch...we've got a whole upcoming year of Jeph's crazy antics to compare it to. :psyduck:

B-day hug.

Hannelore was (past tense) the most damaged character.
This is a sign of healing, of hope, from a cause that looked hopeless.

I am seriously flabbergasted that no-one yet has mentioned my 2012 favourite: Hanners trying to lean on Station's shoulder (#2160). Her being willing to share a romantic moment—and literally tripping over it—is as moving (on more than one level) as it is hilarious. Especially after she bravely hugged her dad in #2146—which for me is a very close second to #2160.

Now that you mention it, her thanks to Station for saving her from a lifetime in a padded room were touching, and it expands the characterization of AIs in society to know that one can make such a difference to a human.

I also found Station's plea for her to stay in 2158 to be oddly moving.

You've got a nasty malformed tag in there.

I agree completely that there was a lot of great stuff that came out of the Space arc. It is MNSHO that the hug was probably the most significant of them all, though - if only because of what it meant. We found out how significant it really was after Station's little dinner date with her.

The best storyline arcs this year were:
  • Space Station
  • The Interns
  • Tai and Dora
  • Emily's Lake House Party

In my opinion, both the significance of the hug and of the dinner date come together and culminate in #2160.

Now THAT is a quote.
