...I've got a new method - only taking one to work with me to force me to cut down because I barely smoke at home...

Just wait, one of these days you'll forget to pack that one along... and viola!  You've quit!

I found the key to quitting was getting away from the social situations I smoked in... so the entire Marine Corps really. Killed my social life for a good month and a half till I made new "Not Smoking" friends.

Good luck!

Smoked about 30 in two days this weekend and feel like I've got two lumps of lead on my chest. Also I have a cough that should've gone away a while ago.

I threw away my lighter this time as well.

I don't want this to be me any more.

It can be done. I quit almost 6 years ago after smoking for more than 20 years.

the urge will still hit me in certain situations but I've realized that is just an urge for some sort of escape as the thought of actually smoking something has no appeal for me.

Holy crap my mother quit smoking. I really am having a hard time grasping that concept...she smoked for over 40 years, and she finally quit. Trust me, guys, miracles can happen.

I'm already feeling the benefit while simultaneously feeling the aftermath of the habit.

It's... good. And I am using my shit of a boss as my motivator for not smoking. Because smoking is letting her win, and I won't fucking let her win.

One thing that helped me is I did the math on my habit, and realized how much I was saving by quitting, a couple nice meals out, or steak for at least a week's worth of meals, my habit was relatively low scale and I bummed a lot, I'm sure an actual serious smoker would be saving even more then me.

One of the times I tried to quit, I succeeded for a while using Nicorette. It was some sort of fruity flavor and it was simultaneously bizarre and delicious. I could actually feel the nicotine seeping into my system. It can be expensive, but might be worth a shot?

Plus, you can chew it wherever you want to- pseudo cigs at work!  :-P

When I quit I used mind tricks. I would trick myself in to thinking I didn't need a smoke. It was really hard at fisrt but became easier with time.

So it's been 13 days since I quit again, and I've had two cigarettes (other people's, didn't buy them) in that time. Both of them tasted awful and made me feel like shit.

Honestly I think I'm on the road to recovery. I might even get to return to my previous state of being able to smoke a few at a party and then not smoke the rest of the time if I'm lucky.

If you got to that point, how difficult would it be to tell yourself you'll never smoke another cigarette? Getting to a point where you can smoke a few at a party might be pushing your luck.

I don't really have a legitimate response for either one of you. I just really miss being able to do that, to just smoke on social occasions. And honestly, it's a great way in to picking up girls.

I personally have asthma, so I can't date someone who smokes because the smell lingers on them and all of their stuff. And I do know others who refuse to date smokers in general.

If you're meeting girls because of smoking, then you'll meet girls who smoke. Those girls will want you to smoke with them later down the line. Picking up girls while smoking is just setting yourself up to smoke again. :/

Sorry to be crass, but I wasn't planning on dating anyone that I met in the smoking area outside a nightclub.

Ah, I must have misunderstood your post about that then. I tend to connect "picking up" to "dating eventually," even though that's rarely the case. And not dating those people is definitely not a bad thing. Social smoking is probably a good way to meet people, but what if you find yourself going back to smoking normally because of it? It's really great that you're not that interested in smoking anymore, but seeing that you want to make exceptions concerns me.

Careful now, Loki. You're an awfully pretty boy. Just don't take up smoking outside clubs

You're right and I'm not about to immediately launch back into social smoking while still trying to quit. I'm going to give it at least a few months of attempting to go cigarette free. And honestly those two that I have had since quitting have made me feel so shitty that I don't really care to repeat them. I just dislike removing the option entirely, and don't really trust myself at that, so I was more trying to leave myself with the option open. Which again may be a dangerous line of thinking, I'll admit.

You don't have to make the decision now, so don't worry about it too much. Wait until the few months you mentioned are up. Then you'll know if you want the option or not. As it is, keep on keepin' on. :)

I realized after I quit -- and one cigarette about 6 months later -- that I could never have another. I haven't. My wife continued to smoke for another six years or so, though no more than a pack a day. She quit a couple of years after she had a large basal cell cancer removed from her arm, and the night before her mastectomy. She decided two cancers were enough.

I've been smoke free for a month now. The first two weeks were the worst, though I was already down to just two or three a day by that point. Once the cravings died down it got loads easier. I can already feel the difference in my breathing.

Bad news: I smoked this weekend at the party.

Good news: I have come home and feel absolutely no desire whatsoever to smoke again. Suggests I've at least broken the habit and just have some booze/smoking association.

The first thing you notice is how the places you used to smoke (the car, your bedroom, living room) smell like stale tobacco.

Well, depends on how heavy a smoker you were, too.

Whenever I visited a place where people smoke, I can smell it afterwards... in my hair.

I have about shoulder-long hair, so yes, I can smell it. I hate it and it won't go away till I wash my hair.

So I've had about 20 'little slip ups' in the last couple of weeks but I'm still trying to consider myself a non-smoker. Work has been really hard lately which is part of the problem, I think. I really need to stop using it as a crutch though.

Do you have an alternative crutch, gum or sweets or something?

I'm assuming you're not using nicotine delivered another way - patches, gum or whatever; while it worked in the end for my wife, I don't think it's a good way to go.  She's currently using low-sugar sweets and gum to come off the nicotine gum she was using.

My wife went with an e-cig.

She's using it as much as she ever smoked.  So still addicted, but her lungs are doing better, I suppose.

At least the place doesn't stink like ashtrays anymore.

Eggplant is the plant with the second highest nicotine amount, after tobacco. People are advised to eat raw eggplant immediately after smoking.

Dunno if that helps

It's taken my wife several years to come off the gum; however, all that time she has not been smoking, so that's a good thing.

Other than the general undesirability of being addicted to anything, what are the downsides of staying on nicotine gum forever? Is nicotine also harmful? I always thought it was the smoke part not the addictive part that was harmful to physical health.

There's this really handy "other thing" I'm going to write as a footnote to my abstract that I can probably explore these issues in. I think I'll call it my "dissertation."

According to Wikipedia nicotine can promote the incidence of cancer, but the risk of that is not nearly as large as if you were smoking.
