By the way, I just realised I've forgotten to smoke for the past two days. They've been really good days, but even so.

Nope, you haven't forgotten to smoke, you just don't smoke any more. Way to go! Even if you have a bad day and smoke a couple, you're well on your way.

Noticing that has made me crave, though, so I think I need to do some situps and weights.

I've been maintaining a steady consumption rate of 2-4 a day, with an output of at least 15kg of mucus per hour. I'm pretty happy with this much progress so far.

Good luck!

I've got one more cigarette left. I will smoke it at work tomorrow, at lunchtime. And after that, I cannot afford cigarettes for the rest of this month.

Let's go hardcore cold turkey.

My impression is that's the best way. As I recall, you've cut down substantially, so the next few days shouldn't be as difficult as for quitting cold turkey from a pack or two a day. But consider that you may remain vulnerable for a while, and that smoking one cigarette can beget smoking another ....
That's how I felt when I quit. YMMV.

I know you can't make someone quit if they don't want to but is there any way to talk to someone about you think it's time they did? My parents have tried multiple times and I really think my Mammy is capable but in all honesty, Da doesn't try nearly as much and I think his coercion of, "Just one more." or "We'll try again tomorrow." is the main reason she still smokes.

You might suggest she should preserve her health so she can see the grandkids. I quit at 40 when my daughter was 5, and being around for her was certainly a factor.

Grandkids won't work with me since I'm not planning on children but my brothers might have children. Although my parents have both said that they've just got rid of us and they're in no rush to be grandparents.  I get the sentiment though. Also I suppose it's really Da I need to talk to about making a sincere go, rather than faulting Mammy for at least trying.

Every time you want a cig, take a deep breath (a REALLY deep breath, no half-assing it) and slowly count to 45. If, after reaching 45, you still have the craving, go for a short jog...it'll get you in better shape, and the more you do it without smoking, the easier it'll become.

And don't forget to try the deep breath thing after you backslide and have a cigarette, too.

The difference may be more convincing than anything else, especially for a singer.

So on Thursday, without any deliberate fanfare to myself, I had my last cigarette. And I've not smoked since, or bought any, or really even thought about it that much.

I think I might have kind of quietly just given up.

I've been smoking at my usual rate again lately. I'm sick again though. This time I'm resolving to not have cigarettes anymore. I just had the last cig out of my pack, and it gave me a headrush and I feel ill and need to lay down. Fuck this feeling. This is what cigarettes give me. It's disgusting. It's slowly killing my voice. It's half of why I'm sick again. It's why I'm so god damn skinny. It's why I'm broke all the time. I'm fucking sick of smoking.

Congrats Gareth!

Patrick, it sounds like you have every reason to want to quit. What do you think got you back on your usual rate? As I believe others noted, it's not necessarily bad to fall off the wagon as long as you can identify what caused it and take steps to keep it from getting you again.

I'm guessing it's mostly the stress from the non-job.  With it's non-pay.

Understandable, but you're definitely stronger than that.  It's a coping habit, and you fell back into it.  Now it's time to climb back up and out, focusing on the job search and what's next instead of dwelling on the c*nt who's shafting you.

You can do it.  You're a fucking genius, don't t let some plant rule your life.

I know you can do it, Pat. If my 76-year-old grandmother who smoked for over 60 years can quit cold-turkey, so can you. ;D

Also, she's been off cigs for about 5 years now, and she's not dead yet. Really racist, but not dead.

Ooooh......that sounds intriguing. But not intriguing enough to spend five bucks on it. I've enjoyed all of the specialty drinks at Starbucks that I've tried but they're stupidly priced. Caramel apple cider, white hot chocolate, caramel macchiato, chai latte....om nom nom. Starbucks is a treat for me- and when I go, I usually get the passion tea anyway. Because the coffee there sucks.  :-P I'm a Dunkin' girl.....I actually used to work there and kinda miss it sometimes lol

I wonder if there is a reci......found it. It sounds heavenly.

I'm definitely going to try to make that. Once I find some good matcha that doesn't cost $30. Maybe your wife's got the right idea, Blue!

Yes, I was about to say that nearly all of Starbucks' fancy drinks have recipes available online for what I'd assume are usually reasonable approximations.

Find reasonable [high-quality] matcha is the tough part. Teavana upcharges everything to begin with, so you're better off going through a local supplier.

...........I just realized that the last 3 hours of my life were spent looking up grocery stores in my area simply because I wanted to find matcha. On the plus side- I now know that there is 1 Indian grocery, 1 Russian/Polish/Ukranian, 2 general Asian, 1 Filipino, 1 Latino and 1 all around "ethnic" grocery store all within just a few miles. Who knew?!

I foresee myself spending way too much money on groceries in the coming weeks.

23? What an odd number. Sure sounds better than cigarettes.

You know, I find it rather peculiar that the biggest difference between most European merchandise (as sold in shops) are sweets. For example, I live near the border to the Netherlands and they have stuff there which we Germans scarcely conceive. On the other hand, they don't have Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte (believe me. I have looked.)

So what I am getting at is, you can now buy chocolate bars!
