7 bars (1.4kg total net, IIRC) of Toblerone from Poundland.

Good lord, "Poundland" is so much better a name than "Dollar General", "Family Dollar", "Dollar Tree", or any dollar name there is!

23 Value chocolate bars from ASDA

23? What an odd number. Sure sounds better than cigarettes.

23 x 30p = £6.90  :-D

2.3kg of Choccy  :-D :-D

Yeah I've been smoking a lot lately... lots of stress at work... suicidal thoughts at one point... just... shit, really.

I am still trying to quit though. It's making me feel awful sometimes.

I don't really get the allure in smoking. It really doesn't do anything for me and it kind of seems like a waste of money.
I could buy 2, maybe 3 fancy beers for that money and even one of those will calm me down more than a cigarette does.

I don't really get the allure in smoking.

As any smoker can tell you, that's not helpful.  Because it's not an "allure".

It's a fucking addiction

Gareth, there will be times when you backslide.  I'm guessing it's not just the work stress, but a few other more personal stresses as well.  That's one of the biggest nicotine triggers there is.

Get your head in a better place, and have another go.  Quitting is a long term commitment, and like any long term commitment, it will have rocky periods.  Just remember, you can always go back to quitting, the same as you went back to smoking.

You can do it, man.  My wife of the two pack a day habit for over 30 years is six weeks without a cig, and taking the first step down on the patches.

Doesn't mean she wasn't hard to live with for a bit...

I don't really get the allure in smoking.

....Well no, because you're not a smoker.

Carl, you're right. I keep finding reasons to smoke and I need to stop doing that. I did go at this with willpower alone before and it worked for a while. I just need to switch it off again like I did before.

That it didn't do anything for you should have given you a great high. On the other hand, did you inhale? If you didn't, don't go back and try it again, please!

I started smoking at 19. Two months after I started, a "friend" in the dorm asked me if I was ever going to start inhaling. So I started, and smoked for the next 20 years.

I quit cold turkey after seeing a hypnotist 35 years ago. Six months later, someone left a pack of cigarettes in my living room after a large party. I found it as I picked up around 3 a.m., and smoked one. I realized I could never do that again. A few months later, I took a drag on a joint as it was passed around at a party. Too much like a cigarette, and I realized I could never do that again. So I look at tobacco as I imagine an alcoholic does. I'm vulnerable, and perhaps I'll always be, although I haven't felt tempted for years.

I would be averse to smoking cigarettes or joints, simply because of my asthma.

Brownies, on the other hand, are something I've wanted to try for a while.

Like, for asthma? I had a nebulizer for a while when I was younger. It's been much better since I left high school, but it does get aggravated by smoke of many types.

I am actually a former asthmatic, so I'm a double idiot but in my experience joints aren't anywhere near as bad as straight tobacco as far as how it affects breathing.

Depends on the weed to tobacco ratio. I can smoke joints just fine if there's only just enough tobacco in them to keep it burning.

like, for ingesting marijuana. it's not smoke; it's more like air that tastes slightly like dirt. it's pretty great!

As a non-smoker, I really like e-cigarettes. I've tried them with nicotine filters and while the nicotine was unpleasant, I find the flavour and action to be ... The only word I have is "soothing". I keep meaning to buy the non-nicotine flavoured filters. I guess growing up with both of my parents and a lot of extended family smoking has shown me the negatives but also made me associate it with something positive?
I'm sorry if that's not helpful but this thread got me thinking and I wanted to share that.

My well wishes to the people trying to quit.

I started smoking when I was 14. I have managed to go from a pack and a half a day to a pack a week.  It was partly discipline, partly use of "electronic cigarettes" and partly changes in my stress levels. During the height of my smoking habit I was going through serious emotional and psychological issues (which is what lead to me starting) and the smoking helped calm me down. Years of therapy, meditation and yoga later and I am in a much healthier headspace which has made reducing the amount I smoke much easier. Now I pretty much just smoke when I like it rather than because I "need" it.

My fear for anyone who's mostly quit is that under stress, it may be easier to resume. Is it possible to quit completely?

Me: Hi. My name is Bob. I'm a smokaholic. I quit in 1977 after 30 pack years.

It is.  Both my parents started in high school, and my mother was at a pack a day, my father at about a pack and a half when the surgeon general's first warning came out in the 60's.  I think I was about 5.

They both quit cold turkey, and neither ever went back to it, even under extreme duress.  That's over 45 years now.

Of course, they had each other for support, and a really annoying kid running around begging them to "kick the habit".

I told my first wife I wouldn't marry her until she had given up smoking.  She did give up; but twenty years later I found that she was smoking a bit secretly, I don't know for how long, and when we split up she made rather a show of smoking publicly.  She has since given up completely.  It really does seem rather complicated to predict how it will go.

My grandfather's current wife quit smoking just for him, several months before they agreed to get married.

My grandmother on my dad's side smoked for a long time, and I would have to bathe as soon as I got home from visiting her, or my asthma would start up with the smell still clinging to me. She eventually told us she quit. Several years later, we found out that she hadn't--she'd just been more secretive about it. I cried. I don't know if she still does. I don't want to ask.

Just.... continue to be honest about your progress, all of you, okay? You all have been doing so well, and I'm really proud of you. <3

I quit smoking using an electronic cigarette and stepping down the nicotine level in the juice over a few months. I bought the inferno, although they have a few different models. I actually still use it here and there when I'm stressed/bummed, but not all the time like I did when I first quit smoking analog cigarettes. It worked great, I still got the feeling of smoking, and the taste was way better (with the right flavors, which there is just about any flavor you could imagine.) than cigarettes. I think there was even cigarette flavored juice, but it tasted like crap. To start, it costs about about what you'd pay in a month for cigarettes, and the juice you get with it lasts about a month. Then it's waaay cheaper than cigarettes (~$30/month instead of ~$150+/month).. This may have been brought up already, but was just a thought from a previous smoker.

Wow, those are actually priced competitively as compared to tobacco? I might have mentioned that I bought therapeutic nicotine inhalers for my dad, which are waaay more expensive than their equivalent in cigarettes, but the only electronic cigarettes I've seen start at €100, with god knows how much for the cartridges.

Is tobacco comparatively expensive where you live, that this is an affordable alternative? Are there any similar things to find in Europe? My mom tells me that e-cigs are banned here for some reason, although I gotta check. Something about health risks. Health risks, they say! For an alternative to smoking that doesn't involve inhaling tar and carbon monoxide! The hypocrisy.

...Okay, seems that they're not allowed to advertise them here, but otherwise they're legal. The one company that I can find selling them is also selling... phones, laptops, budget desktops, laptop components and smoking accessories. Interesting.

My wife has completely switched to e-cigs, and has started the step down process.  She was bying disposable ones, but just got one with cartridges and a charger.

The charger plugs into a USB port...  and the cigarette plugs into the chargetr whole, so it looks like her laptop is lighting up.   :psyduck:

One of my friends is a pretty heavy smoker (I only see him a few times a year at conventions, so all I have to do is stand downwind or talk inside), and he made the swap to e-cigarettes about a year ago. But the last two times I saw him, he was back to normal cigarettes. :/ Is there a particular reason why someone would swap from e-cigarettes to normal ones? Since I so rarely see him, I feel like it would be kind of prying to ask him about it.

Availability might be part of the reason, though their success is fixing that problem.

Might be that he has some concerns that they're somehow worse for him. I wouldn't know why, but I haven't done the research; also look at vaccination-fearers.

Also might be he doesn't find them satisfying enough for some reason, psychologically?  Honestly I don't really have the context to make the call.

Today my aunt is celebrating one year since she smoked her last real cigarette! :-) She's using e-cigs now but it's still damn impressive because she's one of those people who'd smoked since forever.

So with my shitty new manager I don't have the willpower to just quit outright like I did a few weeks back, so I've got a new method - only taking one to work with me to force me to cut down because I barely smoke at home, and then I can work to stopping later.

Stick to it, Gareth. If you're down to 1 or 2 a day, quitting should be easier.
