So I rented The Walking Dead game(s) from Telltale. I thought they did a bang-up job on the few Sam & Max episodes I own, so this should be good.

Right?

I do wonder how well this will work without having watched the show or read the comic past, like, the first one or three.

Wonderful game overall and got a few emotional responses out of me that I was NOT expecting to have. I am psyched that Telltale will eventually create a sequel.

Yeah, it definitely takes place at least partly, if not entirely, before the events in the comics, which is pretty cool (doubt it'll be considered canon, though).

I couldn't bring myself to kill the girl. Mostly roleplaying on my part... I feel like in a real zombie apocalypse I wouldn't want to shoot someone until I saw the "life" flicker out of their eyes on the off chance there really is a way to stop turning or there's a chance to delay it really significantly. Of course, being familiar enough with TWD universe, I knew it wasn't going to happen, but ya know! XD

I really liked Ohmid, and hated the fact that pushing him off the bridge put him in a deadly position makes me feel really bad. That's pretty amazing considering it's a damned game, but still, I gotta finish this bitch. [/spoilers]

The final little tear jerker for me was when it was showing you the list of choices you made with each individual character. The last list they showed was Duck, with the last listing being "Let him be your sidekick while solving a mystery".

I found Duck to be mildly annoying, but obviously he's a kid and didn't deserve any of that. I was seriously glad I let him help and gave him that high five. You really did have to treat every interaction as your last possible interaction with that character when it came to that game if you wanted to minimize guilt at the end of it all.

As an aside, anyone excited for The Walking Dead FPS based off the TV show?

I'd go onto the game wiki after finishing each episode to see the alternate paths and was a little annoyed how most of the choices...ultimately didn't really matter.  Spoilers for all the whole thing, btw.

Went to save Duck? Shawn dies. Went to save Shawn? Shawn still dies, and Duck's ok. Went to save Carly/Doug? Lilly shoots the other by the side of the road.  Save Ben from falling? He dies the next episode, with Kenny going out trying to save him. Don't save Ben from falling? Kenny apparently still dies somehow.  Leave Lilly by the side of the road, never see her again.  Take pity on her, bring her with you...she ends up running off anyway.  Cut off your arm? I was actually fine with you still dying of the bite (since it'd clearly spread already), but it doesn't really stop you from doing anything.  And a few more, probably.

Yes, they're all different scenarios, sure, and it's more choice than most choice-based games, but it still kind of bugged me a little.

Finished episode 5 the other day, and cried my bloody head off.  I'd heard about how emotional the ending would be, and was worried that it wouldn't really live up to the hype.  It totally does.

I love how the game fucks with you.  When I made the decision to cut of my arm (Lee's arm, but damn if I didn't get attached), I was expecting  the decision to be played out in one cut-scene, but no.  You have to keep hacking away 4 or 5 times.

I'd also started playing what it first came out, but didn't have time to get to it again after episode 3 until now, and I had completely forgotten about the station wagon, so when the stranger confronted me, I was pretty much "who the fuck are you?"  So much shit had gone down that stealing supplies was the last thing I ever expected to feel guilty about.

Ohh, right, I've got this game now. I finished Episode 1 just yesterday. I'm interested in seeing how it all plays out. The bit at the motor inn was really annoying without object highlights so I decided to turn them on for the rest of the game.

I suppose I should wait a little bit before starting Episode 2, but not too long otherwise I'm going to forget stuff.

So Telltale designers and voice talent are playing the game live on Twitch all this week. I haven't had time to watch any myself (it starts literally as a I finish work and I've been busy in my evenings) but it's all there as VoD on the channel.

I mean, they had a cow and all sorts of crops, so at first glance it wasn't that obvious that they were doing better than they should be, unless you're extremely familiar with apocalypse survival tropes. The stuff with the bandits was a nice red herring too.

I just finished 400 Days and holy crap! Every story is pretty short, but packs all the heart pounding action and decisions into it that the regular story has.

Duck is still fine, the farm owner still kicked me off the farm angrily since his son still died (although the anger was at Kenny instead of me), and...yeah. Just saved Doug this time instead of Carley, I wonder if he still gets killed. Probably, but I'm not there yet.
