- Only 3 tornadoes in the area, all minor
- No poisonous animals native within 100 km in any direction.  None.
- I have never seen a cockroach outside a museum
- Variety of weather/seasons
- Spectacular autumns
- No population crush
- Fantastic air quality
- Amazingly long summer nights

The air quality here is terrible (Albeit I am not far to the North, but frankly the entire East coast has terrible air quality), and even small towns manage to be congested. Since I've moved here we've had one tornado (I've never even seen one before) and we do get hit with Northern Hurricanes. The poisonous animal thing... I dunno, I promise you there is something with poison around near you.

Probably nothing more than a mushroom.  There is a species of endangered poisonous snake on the great lakes, but that's it for this part of the world.

The British Met Office still hasn't recovered from its failure to give any notice of the devastating storm we had in 1987.  As a result, ever since it has predicted storms at the drop of a hat - they're predicting one this weekend, so I expect it'll just be a bit windy.

Well yes...   But more generally, it's a tradeoff.  It's not like colder climates have no benefits.  Outdoors/nature is fairly safe, natural disasters are rare here, and the change of seasons is often breathtakingly beautiful.  Plus, we get a ton of sunlight in the summer.

... and darkness in winter. Don't know where you are though, in Norway and Scotland however autumn and spring can be beautiful, but mostly it rains all autumn so it's a waste. In Norway especially spring is just a sludge of melting snow and mud, when it's finally gone it starts snowing again and you have to deal with it all over again. Not to mention frequent breakdowns of public transport and closed roads. Ugh I need to move somewhere warm.

it's true that Norway on a nice, sunny summer day is the most beautiful and wonderful place to be, but those days are so rare it's pointless to sacrifice the rest of the year for it.

Oh yeah the only reason why Scandinavia is liveable is the mild current coming from the gulf of Mexico. It gets really cold inland, but the Norwegian coast is pretty mild compared to everywhere else at this latitude. If it wasn't for that current, Scandinavia would be another version of Greenland...

Even London's further North (51.5° N) than that.  The Gulf Stream does a lot for North-Western Europe, as Metope says.  That's why the possibility that global warming might disrupt it is a particularly serious concern for us - we could end up a lot colder, even in a warmer world.

I went fishing with my dad a bunch of times near Espanola. The first time we went it was in July, and at night there was frost on the grass outside. Being 7 years old at the time I went swimming in the lake anyway.

Used to predict winter around these parts. The 'winner' of the local Wolly Worm festival was almost completely brown, which supposedly prognosticates a mild winter.

It's the same here, I have heard it both ways, that a thicker brown band is a harsher winter, and a thinner is mild, and vice versa. However wiki says the color of the fuzz can vary greatly in a single brood, so it's best to not trust the cute lil'critters for a weather forecast.

This is one of the few times it's been stormy in this region and Scotland didn't get any of it, just some on-off rain for a couple days. It's beautiful and sunny now, actually.

The path of the storm was quite narrow, and missed me; it also passed at night.  Honestly, I wasn't really conscious of anything more than a windy walk with the dogs!

A tree fell on a railway line near Oxford, but that's it locally.  My wife's car journey to work in the morning (driving towards the main storm) was her easiest ever, as so many people had been panicked into staying in.  I believe there have been two deaths from the storm in England (13 in Europe altogether).  Also two people died in a gas explosion that is suspected to have been a result of storm damage.

Ah, I was going to say that the news keeps announcing four deaths but the last part of your sentence explains that. Here, in the Welsh borders of Shropshire, the storm didn't really hit but the weather is unsettling - half an hour ago there were bright blue skies and brilliant sunshine, and now it is drizzling quite heavily and I had to sprint out to fetch the washing in.

As for weather, second time having to scrape the windshield on the way to swimming.  Also, had to switch from the windbreaker to the fleece, since it was -4C.

Yeah . We had wild weather at about the same time. The TV news led with a story about a storm blowing the roof off a shopping mall at Hornsby (northern outskirts of Sydney), trees down, flash floods etc. and I was thinking "Wow, that's bad!" Then they switched to a report on the tornadoes in Illinois, and I thought "Argh, that's worse!" Then there was more on the continuing relief efforts in the Philippines, and I thought "Count your blessings!"

In my district, we had no worse than thunderstorms, very heavy rain (great fun for cycling) and moderately high winds, so we were OK but for a mess in the yard.

The snow didn't actually last the night and the low ground will be clear again. I reckon trains will be fine in the valley. It's been a bit nippy here though and it may be a bit icy up on the tops. I've not been out in the Peaks for a few weeks though so I'm not certain. Skiddaw and Ben Cawthra up in the Lakes were snow capped a couple of weekends ago which was a very pretty.
