It's 20 degrees right now, it was 9 this morning. I don't know how people function in cold like this. I don't even want to leave my little office with the baseboard heaters because the hallway is cold.

We've had 40 cold calls so far this month at work. We had 25 in all of December.

We are hovering right around zero F. It is snowing a bit because of the rise in temps.

Don't get me wrong - it's still freakin' cold out there.

It's also about 1/6 less thermal energy than normal room temperature (referenced to Kelvin temp)...which means any air would lose 1/6 of its volume. Yeah, I think you're lucky to get by with a pulled muscle.
Speaking of that: My car has one of those dashboard readouts that lets you cycle through various pieces of info about the car's status. It also doesn't let me tell it that I can't really do anything about the air compression due to the weather. I just need to wait until temperatures rise over sub-zero before it'll stop warning me about the tires.

Also? F*** OU's parking. There's really nothing that could be done about it, but still...

OU? Is that the same OU I'm at where it's currently 70 degrees?

Yes, I know the Aussies have me beat, but I still like taunting the people dealing with cold weather right now.

I feel concern for people there who bicycle to work.
Riding to work isn't too bad, because the heat of the day has not built up. Riding home in the late afternoon again avoids peak temperatures, but is still hot. The key to hot-weather riding is hydration; I carry a minimum of 750ml of water on my handlebars, adding more water and hydration salts as required by the ride-distance and temperature.

Man, I biked to my bar job all summer despite it getting hotter than 45C. I'm a skinny little bugger, so that helped, but yeah, drinking water is key.

45C is ridiculous. They should just cancel everything in that kind of heat.

Unless you work at a water park, in which case you better be working overtime.

Again?

In the bleak midwinter,
frosty wind made moan;
ground was hard as iron,
water like a stone.
Snow was falling, snow on snow -
snow on snow,
in the bleak midwinter,
not so long ago!

Hooray, parking ban. We have a one-lane driveway, and four rather large vehicle.

So...I had to park my wife's car at the back of the driveway, my father-in-law's truck in the middle, and my work van at the street end. And my car goes on the front lawn. Just in time to "go stealth" once the snow of doom starts to fall.

What's the purpose of a parking ban? Is it to allow snow ploughing?

Yes. It's an emergency order declared by the City Council or the Public Works Dept, saying that no one can park on any city street, or their vehicle will be towed to an impound lot. It really is a pain to have to plow (or plough, for you Brits) around a parked vehicle, especially considering most plow trucks have poor turning radius and 12-foot wide plows. So if you don't move your car, the other risk is getting it damaged or destroyed by a plow truck.

Rochester is pretty well known for being wonderfully tyrannical about parking in the winter. The city is well known for having the best snow plow system in the country and they will punish your entire block by not plowing and your neighbors will know who caused the pain in the ass.

Oh yeah, and like you said, you might also just risk getting hit by a plow. By accident of course. Totally an accident.

The snow was heavy when I was coming down the mountain, and I saw a highway-size plow and salt truck in the ditch with a car tangled in it's side.  I'm guessing the car was passing, and the plow was changing lanes to get to the turnaround.

Fail on both sides.

FAAAACK.

Forty-two inches of snow later, I literally cannot open my front door. We managed to get out through the back windows, start up the snowblower, and carve our way to the front of the house. We then proceeded to make a walkway where there was once a "sidewalk", near this thing called a "road". Public works says they can't get anyone plowed out until TUESDAY. That's just fucking great. I think I'll put on some layers tomorrow, trudge down to main street, break through a supermarket window with a shovel, and just start looting.

It is not so much that they won't plow the street, as they can't plow the parking area. If a stretch of road can 5 cars and one is parked in the middle when the plow comes only the first and last spot get plowed, the other two empty ones actually get new snow pushed into them.  I live in an area where few people have off street parking, and fewer have enough off street parking to accommodate more than one car.  If you know you will be home when the plow comes it is expected (by your neighbors) that you move it to a stretch that has been plowed, or to the end of a stretch to maximize spots that get plowed.  Snow removal is also why secondary streets in Rochester have alternate parking, that is mon, wed, fri, is is on one side and tue, thur, sat, sun it is on the other.  Do NOT be the douche that leaves their car on the wrong side just after a storm.

As far as getting your car hit by a plow; it happened to me, and I was SOL. The City said I couldn't prove it was them, and I had cheap insurance which wouldn't cover it unless I had someone to blame.  The car drove fine, but there was a half inch wide, half inch deep two foot long dent in the door.  If it wasn't a plow I don't know what it was...

But they were "mostly ok"?

A friend/acquaintant (not a bosom buddy, a fellow orienteerer who I would occasionally have lunch with) died when committing the stupidity of passing a plow truck. He ran his car into an oncoming bus that he couldn't see because of the swirling snow. Officially an autopsy determined that he died of a heart attack. We shall never know whether the heart attack caused his car to drift to the wrong lane, or whether the sight of bus headlights zeroing in a second before impact caused a heart attack.

Six of one, half a dozen of the other...

Most of the snow has been cleared from walkways and roads, but it's been quite the job getting there. In the meantime, here's a picture of my work van, parked in my driveway, right after the snow stopped. The top of the van is 6'8"...so, yeah. Lot of snow.

I've mentioned this before, but it's been a while...

My first year living in Buffalo was the winter of '77.  The blizzard that hit at the end of January was the stuff of legends, and still outdoes this little mess.

We had a drift against the house that sealed both the front and back doors shut (they were on the same side of the house).  We got out through the balcony off my brother's bedroom.  I dug a tunnel to the back door.

It was a week before the street was cleared.  They brought in metro-melters from Toronto.  The snow they hauled off got dumped either into Lake Erie or Delaware Park, where there were snow piles that lasted through the summer and got snowed on the next wiinter...

I feel for you guys stuck in it, but trust me - you'll make it.  I've seen worse!

Front and back ... same side ... is that even legal?

It was a large late victorian era house.  The majority of the expansive front porch had been turned into a sunroom (southern exposure), so the door that had gone to the front porch opened onto a small enclosed area that went down stairs to the side - the door faced forward, but the whole enclosure filed with snow.  The back door was in the side of the house at the foot of the back stairs - essentially a service entrance.

Oh god, the things you can find on the internet... here's a pic of the house from an online realty site.  The decorative window on the side was completely covered.  Like I said, we got out off a second floor balcony in the back...

This is why it may be best I never experience snow.... in my head it's white powdery stuff... not stuff that can melt and get you wet and make you miserable.

This is why it may be best I never experience snow....

I dunno... Watching Jimmy/JimmyTheSquid frolic around in the snow in Boston makes me think it might be. (For reference, he's Australian and had seen snow, but never been in a proper snow.) It below freezing, we had a delightful windchill, and there had just been a snowstorm. It was cold. If you spent too much time outside, it made you miserable. Except for Jimmy, who loved every moment of it. I am sure being in a proper snow at least once in your life is not a bad thing. Besides, getting to go back inside, warm up under fuzzy blankets, and have hot cocoa/tea/coffee is very nice. Especially when you're near a fire. Also playing in snow is fun. Snowball fights, building things, digging tunnels when it's deep enough, eating snow...

Basically as long as you don't have to drive in it or go anywhere and are properly bundled up, it's not so bad! Unless it's all the time, then eff that shizz.

We got a little bit of snow here tonight. Not much, just enough to cover the grass, leaving the sidewalks and roads just wet. So naturally, I was woken up this morning by the sound of a plow trying to scrape non-existent snow off of the street outside my apartment.

The gods apparently did not get enough laughs by dumping snow over great portions of the country, so they sent some to the Phoenix, Arizona area.

My dad informed me of that. I had to chuckle.

Yup, winter has reached Oklahoma. There are currently both severe thunderstorm warnings and blizzard warnings in Oklahoma. And, forgetting about the two-to-three inches of horror about to fall on Norman, I made the mistake today of going to the grocery store during the panic.
